The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A 7-year-old boy is recovering after being bitten by a shark while vacationing in Myrtle Beach.

Rudy Varney of Mingo County, W.Va. was bitten while wading in the Atlantic Ocean earlier this week.

An aunt, Carnetta Hopkins, said after the boy started screaming, relatives rushed to his side, saw blood coming from his foot and immediately got him out of the water.

Hopkins says the boy underwent surgery to repair a severed tendon and lacerated foot. He was back in his hotel room the following day.

Hopkins says the family was told by authorities the bite was most likely caused by a black-tip shark, which can grow to 5 feet long.
