Two critically hurt in Downtown Connector wreck

Two people were critically injured on the Downtown Connector when one car collided head on with another early Tuesday, Atlanta Police said.

The crash closed all lanes of the connector southbound as police investigated the wreck and worked to clear the wreckage.
It also left both drivers entrapped in their cars, police said.
The accident happened when a man was driving north in the southbound lanes of I-75/I-85, police said. The car, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, collided with a woman who was driving in the southbound lane of the Connector, police said.
Both were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. The man has severe head injuries, police said. The woman has severe internal injuries, police said.
Police have declined to name the drivers.
The man was arrested for reckless driving, serious injury by vehicle and driving the wrong way, police said.
Police said they also suspect the man was driving while intoxicated but have not charged him with that.
The interstate was reopened around 5:30 a.m.
