Truck slams into Buckhead building
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Atlanta police are investigating a wreck Monday morning that sent a truck careening into a building in the heart of Buckhead.
The crash, involving a box truck and a 1993 Toyota Camry, happened before 7 a.m. at the point where Peachtree, Roswell and West Paces Ferry roads intersect.
Hannah Carraway was driving the Toyota southbound on Peachtree Road on her way to her job as a nurse. The truck was eastbound on West Paces Ferry Road.
“We hit in the intersection,” Carraway told the AJC. “My airbags went off, and I looked in my rearview window and [the truck] was going the other way, northbound on Roswell Road. I have no idea how he ended up on the other side of the street.”
The rear of the truck came to rest wedged between a light pole and the front of the Clive Christian store, which sells perfumes and furniture. The front glass windows were shattered at lululemon athletica, a clothing store just north of Clive Christian, and a building across Peachtree Road from those businesses was also damaged.
Tim Cowley is property manager of the heavily-damaged building that houses the clothing and furniture stores hit by the truck.
He said police told him that after the initial collision, the truck’s gas pedal apparently got stuck, sending the truck into the clothing store. The driver then put the truck in reverse and backed into the Clive Christian store.
“I was trying to figure out how it happened when I saw it online,” Cowley said. “Being here for 20 years, I’ve seen some crazy things at that intersection. This is number one or two.”
The truck driver, whose name has not been released, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, Atlanta police spokesman Otis Redmond said. Carraway was treated at the scene.
“My hand hurts pretty bad but I’m all right, glad to be able to walk out of this instead of in an ambulance,” she said.
Roswell Road was initially shut down in both directions from Peachtree Road north to Sardis Way, but the northbound lanes had been reopened by about 7:30. Southbound lanes were reopened to traffic around 9 a.m.
