The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed set out several goals in his inauguration speech Monday. Here are five to watch for in  his first year in office.

- Reforming the permitting department.

"We will make sure functions like the permitting process in this city are not a source of frustration, but rather a source of growth," he said.

- Increasing pay for police officers.

"We must treat our officers better by paying them a wage that allows them to support their families."

- Repair the pension system.

"The stark reality is that one of every five dollars is currently going to fund a pension system that is strangling our city."

- Open the recreation centers closed by budget cuts and turn them into "centers of hope."

"That is what they must be for the sake of our children."

- Better customer service.

"We must be kind to one another."
