Rain moves out, could return Sunday

The skies dumped buckets of rain — two to five inches — on metro Atlanta Friday morning and more may come later in the evening.

But forecasters say it will be somewhat dry on Saturday though another system is expected to pass through on Sunday. That rain Sunday, however, will be chased out by clear skies and slightly cooler temperatures that will stay for several days, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecaster Kent Frantz said Friday was a “busy day” with the down pour

“A lot of areas got some heavy rain but most were able to handle it,” Frantz said.

Many major creeks in the metro Atlanta area spilled over their banks but the flooding was not significant, Frantz said.

Yet, the one that almost always floods, Peachtree Creek, stayed within its banks.

But the two creeks that feed Peachtree Creek — North Fork Peachtree Creek and South Fork Peachtree Creek — were almost a foot above flood stage, which is 11 feet for both.

Crooked Creek in western Gwinnett County reached 11.5 feet. The flood level for the Chattahoochee River tributary is 11 feet.

There were scattered reports of weather damage, provided by police.

A first floor window of a government building in downtown Atlanta was blown out.

North of the city, a huge tree fell on the Chevrolet Malibu 27-year-old Ashley Neville Rosa was driving on Railroad Street in Canton Friday morning. Rosa was uninjured.

And later in Gwinnett County, a tree fell onto power lines and then the road, blocking Ridgeland Way in Lilburn Friday afternoon.
