Pair arrested after trying to mug -- an Atlanta police officer
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It had the makings of a perfect crime.
A mugging in downtown Atlanta.
On a Friday.
In broad daylight.
The pair of would-be thieves move in on their target: a man leaving the post office at Marietta and Forsyth streets.
But the robbery doesn’t happen because the man runs away.
Figuring their plan has been foiled, the bandits get in their own car and start driving – until they are stopped by the Atlanta police.
They knew about the botched crime by getting a call on their radio from the potential victim, a fellow officer.
He just wasn’t working at the time and had no signs that he was a cop.
“He was just a guy going to the post office,” Atlanta Police Sergeant Curtis Davenport said.
And, when he ran from the muggers and got in his car, he radioed for help from the APD.
He was able to follow the pair in his own car until officers showed up for help.
Police then arrested Fernando Jackson, 35, and Jonathan Jackson, 32, and charged them with robbery.
Jonathan Jackson was also charged with second-degree forgery after police found him with identification from other people, Davenport said.
A perfect crime, it was not, but it had a pretty nice ending, the cops say.
