Channel 2 Action News reported that a group of women heard the man screaming for help along Marietta Street west of downtown and called 911.
Atlanta police spokesman Otis Redmond said the man, who was hit behind an adult entertainment business in the 700 block of Marietta Street, lost his left foot and ankle in the accident. He was alert and conscious, and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition, Redmond said.
Nicole Robinson told Channel 2 that she and were co-workers were on break when they heard the man's screams.
She said the man said, “Please call 911. I’ve been hit by a train, my leg is cut off and I’m dying.”
“It’s just a coincidence that we came on break and then we hear someone yelling for help when we’re the only ones on the road,” Robinson told Channel 2.
The man's name has not been released.
The incident comes two days after a woman was killed by a train in Gwinnett County.
In that incident, a freight train was traveling from Hamlet, N.C., to Atlanta on Monday when it hit the woman at Gloster Road near Oak Road, CSX spokesman Gary Sease said.
Gwinnett fire crews went to the scene after receiving a phone call from CSX authorities, Gwinnett fire spokesman Tommy Rutledge said. Authorities have not said why the woman was on the tracks.
