John Shelby Spong to speak in Atlanta

Bishop John Shelby Spong will participate in a lecture series that runs through Sunday on the future of Christianity, sponsored by Trinity Presbyterian Church, the Cathedral of St. Philip and Morehouse College.

The lecture series is also supported by several other local churches.

Spong is known for his work fighting racism and anti-Semitism  and working on behalf of women, gays and others who face oppression.

The series includes:

"Rethinking the Role of Jesus in Today's Post-Darwinian World," at 9 .am. Saturday at The Cathedral of  St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Rd. NW.

"The Role of Christians in a Scientific, Multi-Cultural and Multi-Faith World," at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Rd. NW.

"Religious Victimization: Are Sexuality and gender the Basis of a New Segregation?" at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College.

Spong is the former Episcopal bishop of Newark and is a noted lecturer and author. His recent book, "Eternal Life," goes on sale in paperback Oct. 5.
