Groups unite to fight ID theft
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
An Atlanta-wide coalition of civic groups and local government officials announced a public awareness campaign Monday to combat identity theft.
The effort includes the Atlanta Police Department holding training sessions with community organizers and residents to teach them how to spot identity theft.
The campaign is being led by the Atlanta Victim Assistance’s Project SAFE program and is being funded through a U.S. Justice Department grant.
Georgia ranks seventh in the nation in reported identity theft cases, according to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. The estimated cost to each identity theft victim is about $500.
