Georgian walks 530 miles to help troops
Anderson asks others to send prepaid phone cards to soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
WASHINGTON — More than two weeks after wrapping up his unique walking tour of Washington, Georgian Cody Anderson is still stiff and sore, but done and proud.
Anderson, 54, walked back and forth between the U.S. Capitol and the
White House almost every day for a month, asking anybody he saw to send prepaid phone cards to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Reached by phone back in Mineral Bluff, Ga., near the Tennessee border, Anderson said he is still recovering from his super-marathon walk, and understandably so.
In all, he covered about 530 miles — farther than the distance between Atlanta and Orlando — walking 10 hours nearly every day from June 5 to July 7.
Anderson set aside Sundays for church, but the only other days he gave himself a break were one sick day and a half-day on the Fourth of July, which also happened to be his birthday.
Though he’s done pushing himself to walk, he’s not done pushing for phone cards. He asks that donors continue to send prepaid phone cards to the troops, via the White House, at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20500.
