A Georgia Tech student was stabbed early Thursday after making a trip to the Publix in Midtown, Atlanta police said.

The student told police he was walking to the Publix at Spring Street and Peachtree Place around 5:30 a.m. to buy food. When he discovered the store was closed, he told police he started walking back to his home, heading down Eighth Street.

He told police a man, who was sitting in the grass, jumped up and began yelling at him. The student told police that he did not understand what the man was saying -- but he removed some money from his wallet and handed it to the man.

The student told police the man kept yelling at him and then lunged at him, stabbing him in the stomach.

The man took off running on Eighth Street toward Peachtree Street.

The student walked back to his home and called police. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with what police said were non-life-threatening injuries.

There was no word on his condition. Police have not released his name.
