Case delayed for deadly hit and run suspect
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A woman charged with killing five people in a deadly hit and run crash will have more time to decide if she will take a plea deal.
Fulton County prosecutors told a judge on Monday that they need to delay Aimee Michael’s case while they wait for marijuana found in her car to be tested.
Michael must decide by May 4 if she wants to take a plea, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kimberly Esmond Adams said.
“We haven’t decided if we will take a negotiated plea,” Michael’s attorney, Scott Smith, told the judge.
Michael remains on home confinement, charged with five counts of vehicular homicide and hit and run.
Prosecutors said the 22-year-old was driving her mother’s BMW on Camp Creek Parkway on Easter when she struck another car, causing a chain reaction of wrecks. An Atlanta family of four -- Robert Carter, 39, Delisia Carter, 38, their 9-year-old daughter Kayla Lemons and 2-month-old son Ethan Carter – died in the crash. Six-year-old Morgan Johnson, who was in another car, also died in the crash. Her mother, 43-year-old Tracy Johnson, was injured.
Police said Michael drove off and concealed the crash.
Her mother, 52-year-old Sheila Michael, was also in court on Monday. The mother, a former Atlanta school teacher, is charged with helping her daughter conceal the crime.
The judge ordered Michael and her mother to continue to maintain the conditions of their bond, including not leaving their south Fulton home. The mother and daughter are scheduled to return to court on Oct. 26.
Smith declined to comment, citing a gag order issued by the judge.
