The Atlanta Public School system has won the top prize in a national contest honoring urban school boards.

The Atlanta district, one of two finalists for the Council of Urban Boards of Education's (CUBE) Award for Urban School Board Excellence, received the honor Saturday at convention in Austin, Texas. CUBE is part of the National School Boards Association.

The Broward County School system in Florida was the other finalist.

The Atlanta Board of Education was singled out for creating a strong governance structure, consistent leadership, and for its dedication to improving student achievement system-wide, said Keith Bromery, district spokesman.
