Atlanta police Thursday were looking for the thief who stole -- and quickly wrecked -- a Grady Memorial Hospital ambulance

The ambulance was found just before midnight Wednesday in a ditch along Thomasville Boulevard in southeast Atlanta, its engine still running.

"We discovered the ambulance had been stolen from Newtown Circle," Atlanta police Lt. Antonio Clay told WSB-TV.

Paramedics had responded to a sick call at an apartment complex and left the engine running when they went into the apartment.

"Once they returned, the vehicle was missing," Clay said. The ambulance was found about two blocks away.

"Nothing was missing out of the ambulance; it just had been crashed," Clay told WSB.
