One man was shot fatally in the head, and another shot in the back, police said.
A man in his mid-20s came out of the K&S Market convenient store in the 3500 block of Martin Luther King Drive, just before 7:30 p.m., and got into the back seat of a car waiting outside, police said.
The car pulled out onto Howell Drive, Atlanta police homicide Det. Lt. Keith Meadows said, when a man ran up on the car, pulling out a gun.
"The perpetrator shot at least seven times into the victims' vehicle," Meadow said.
The man in the back seat was killed by a gunshot wound to the head, police said. The driver, also in his mid-20s, was shot in the back.
A woman in the front passenger's seat, initially thought to be another shooting victim, was injured by glass when the back window shattered, police believe.
The driver drove more than seven miles from the shooting scene to Grady Memorial Hospital, where the man in the back seat was pronounced dead, Meadows said.
Police were called around 8 p.m., Meadows said.
The driver and the woman passenger were in stable condition, and were being questioned by investigators, Meadows said.
Police haven't identified a motive or suspect, but said the shooter was last seen jumping into a burgundy Pontiac Grand Prix.
The man killed in the incident was not named, pending notification of his next of kin.
