Sunny skies and temperatures above freezing melted what little precipitation collected on roads, causing the National Weather Service to cancel a winter weather advisory hours before it was scheduled to end.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said temperatures will continue to rise through the weekend, topping 60 degrees by Sunday. The forecast calls for sunny skies through Valentine's Day.
Still, it was a tricky commute for some drivers Thursday morning, with officials reporting a series of ice-related crashes in Hall, Dawson, Forsyth, Cherokee and Gwinnett counties.
In northern Forsyth, as many as 10 cars reportedly wrecked on ice near the intersection of Ga. 306 and Jot-Em-Down Road, according to Mark Arum and Doug TurnbullĀ in the AM 750 and now 95.5 FM News/Talk WSB Traffic Center.
School officials in a handful of mountain counties closed schools for the day and several other counties in extreme north Georgia delayed the start of classes. No closings are anticipated for Friday, when temperatures should approach 50 degrees.
