Police: 2 of 3 suspects ID'd in videotaped attack
Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said investigators know who some of the suspects are who were videotaped attacking a 20-year-old gay man outside a southwest Atlanta neighborhood store. "We have identified at least two of the three individuals," Turner said Thursday night at an emergency public safety meeting organized by the Pittsburgh Community Improvement Association.

Woman gets 17 years for scam
A Marietta woman was sentenced to more than 17 years in federal prison Thursday for her role in a multimillion dollar telemarketing scam, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced. Kara Singleton Adams, 40, was found guilty in November of nine counts of wire fraud, seven counts of structuring financial transactions and two counts of conspiracy.

Forsyth construction worker dies
A man operating heavy machinery in a Forsyth County development died Thursday morning after hitting a tree, a fire department captain said. The man, identified by the deputy coroner as Jeffery Lee McGhee, was working on a home under construction off James Burgess Road in the southeastern part of the county at the time of accident, Capt.

Arrest made in alleged kidnapping
The man charged with trying to kidnap a 7-year-old girl from a west Georgia Wal-Mart was convicted of killing his uncle in 2004 in DeKalb County, according to documents obtained Thursday. Thomas Andrew Woods, 25, of Austell was taken into custody and questioned before being arrested Wednesday afternoon, Bremen Police Chief Keith Pesnell told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Atlanta City Council approves $19,600 in claims against the city
Atlanta's City Council voted on Feb. 6 to approve $19,600 in claims against the city for automobile accidents and injuries from broken sidewalks and uncovered water meter boxes. The eight claims with so-called favorable recommendations ranged from $9,500 for an automobile accident in late 2010 to $550 for another accident in September 2011.

Atlanta City Councilwoman Joyce M. Sheperd plans to join Police Chief George Turner to discuss Atlanta's new vacant property registry at a kick-off event on Monday, Feb. 13. The event is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at 2482 Perkerson Road, S.W. Owners of vacant properties are now required to register with the city in what Sheperd's office described as an effort to improve enforcement of the city's housing code and crack down on structures that are vacant and unsafe.

Anand picked as U.S. magistrate
Justin Anand, deputy chief of the U.S. Attorney's Office's economic crime division, has been picked to be a U.S. magistrate in Atlanta. A prosecutor for the past eight years, Anand, 40, will succeed U.S. Magistrate Christopher Hagy when he retires June 1.

Five educators accused of cheating in Atlanta Public Schools have lost the license to work in a classroom, a state ethics committee decided Thursday. The five, whose names were not released, violated ethical guidelines set up by the Professional Standards Commission, which certifies and monitors Georgia educators.

Airport concessions lay off 530
An airport concessions joint venture run by Atlanta-based Concessions International expects to lay off about 530 employees starting next month, though many of those workers could find jobs with new restaurants. Fort Mac at a glance
Fort McPherson, a 488-acre site between Atlanta and East Point, was founded by the U.S. Army in 1885. The Army closed the base last fall and the McPherson Implementing Local Redevelopment Authority is transitioning the property for civilian use. The site will take about 20 to 25 years to develop but work is under way: • MILA is working with the Army to transfer ownership.

State to invest in Fort Mac
Gov. Nathan Deal wants to spend about $28 million to help bring new life to Fort McPherson, but there are few details on how the money will be used and what future investments the state will make. The recently vacated, 488-acre Army post is about four miles south of downtown Atlanta and has been hailed as a strong candidate for redevelopment, although few concrete plans have been advanced so far.

The APD is holding a job fair beginning at 8 a.m. Monday on the 2nd floor of police headquarters, 226 Peachtree Street SW. Police Chief George Turner went before the City Council last year to request more funding to get the police force to 2,000 officers from about 1,800 currently.

Brandon White said he wasn’t going to call police Saturday after he was attacked and beaten amid a hail of anti-gay slurs outside a southwest Atlanta neighborhood store. Vestal to lead new center for Baptist leadership at Mercer

Mercer creates Baptist leadership center
Mercer University received a $2.5 million grant for a new center for Baptist leadership, officials announced Wednesday. The center will focus on Baptist history, theology, ethics and other areas. Daniel Vestal, executive coordinator of the Atlanta-based Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, will lead the center starting July 1.

The victim of a beating by men shouting anti-gay slurs is expected to talk about the incident at a press conference Wednesday. The press conference is scheduled for noon. The man came forward to Atlanta police Tuesday after video of the attack got the attention of the FBI.

Driver indicted in death of Atlanta police officer
A 22-year-old Stone Mountain woman was formally charged Tuesday in the crash that killed an Atlanta police officer last month, the Fulton County District Attorney's Office announced. Chasity Nicole Jones was indicted by a Fulton grand jury on 13 counts, including homicide by vehicle in the first degree, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, and possession of open container of alcoholic beverage while operating vehicle.

Atlanta OKs truancy ordinance
The Atlanta City Council on Feb. 6 unanimously approved an ordinance allowing for more flexibility in combating school truancy. In 2009, the City Council created a daytime curfew for children ages 6 to 15. Currently, Atlanta police may cite the parent and order them to appear in court after finding a student breaking the curfew three times.

Atlantic Station and Meehan's Public House, which recently announced plans to open a new location at the complex, plan to team up on March 17 to throw a large St. Patrick's Day party called "ShamRock the Station." Events will be located in and around Central Park, between Rosa Mexicano and Strip Steaks and Sushi.

Barbecue restaurants donate to family of Atlanta police officer
Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q, Big Tex and Smith’s Olde Bar joined together recently to raise funds in honor of Gail Thomas, an Atlanta police officer who was killed two weeks ago in a crash authorities claim was caused by a drunk driver. On Wednesday, Feb. 1, the restaurants pledged to donate a percentage of the restaurant sales to a charity called Humble Heroes and Thomas' family.
