Bounded roughly by Chamblee-Tucker Road, Buford Highway and Chestnut Drive, the subdivision encompasses about 250 acres. It features more than 500 homes, plus parks, churches and a school. Nearly every house is a ranch, the home of choice a half-century ago.

‘Historic’ criterion

A site must be at least 50 years old to be considered for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

If the register accepts Northwoods, it will join northwest Atlanta’s Collier Heights community, a ranch community named to the list two years ago. Collier Heights is significant because it is one of the first traditionally African-American suburban communities to take shape after the war. Other Atlanta communities, including Inman Park and Grant Park, are on the register, too. Suburban sites include historic districts in Acworth and Norcross. More than 2,000 sites in Georgia, representing more than 74,000 properties, are on the national list.
