A nine-year old girl was released from the hospital late Sunday night after being pinned under a car as she and her mother were leaving a grocery store.

The incident happened at the Whole Foods store on Roswell Road Sunday afternoon. Sandy Springs police responded to a call of an accident involving the young girl around 2:30 p.m.

According to officers, a 70-year old male driver briefly lost control of his vehicle causing it to back into a large cement planter and then over the girl.

“Officers on the scene said it appears the heavy cement planter took most of the impact from the car,” said Lt. Steve Rose, spokesman for the Sandy Springs Police Department, “Preventing [the car] from injuring the child further.”

The girl, whose name has not been released, was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, said Rose.

She was released several hours later and is recovering at the family's home in Lilburn, Rose said. He said the girl suffered severe abrasions, but no broke bones or head injuries.

Rose said the girl is expected to recover fully from her injuries.

No charges have been filed pending the conclusion of the investigation.
