The Internet has opened that up quite a bit, by allowing companies to post whatever information they want. And, in greater numbers, people are looking on the Web instead of in telephone books to find businesses.
The problem comes when owners must pay to design, build and host a site. It can get pretty costly and the choices are overwhelming.
The good news is that Yahoo is helping small business owners with this dilemma.
The company is offering to build and host a Web site for free for any business owner. You get five pages and you are listed in the Yahoo directory for nothing.
The company is hoping, of course, that people will buy other services once they've built the site and want to enhance it. But for now, you can go to local.yahoo.com and start working on your site.
