Gwinnett Braves holding mascot tryouts
Winner gets to wear groundhog costume
Monday, November 17, 2008
If they’re lucky, the person chosen to wear the groundhog costume for the Gwinnett Braves will one day be mentioned along with the likes of Ted Giannoulas and Tom Burgoyne.
OK, they’re anonymous, but their characters — the San Diego Chicken and the Phillie Phanatic — are legends in the mascot world.
The G-Braves will be holding auditions to portray Chopper — a corpulent cartoon groundhog — at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville. No experience necessary, though reserved types who hate to dance might want to look elsewhere.
The winner can only hope Chopper fares better than the failed Atlanta baseball mascots the Bleacher Creature and Homer the Brave or Izzy/Whatizit, the Atlanta Olympics mascot no one seemed to love.
