Norcross shuts out Mill Creek in region opener

D.J. Adams scored on two short touchdown runs, and Conner Hawk kicked field goals of 46 and 47 yards as Norcross defeated Mill Creek 19-0 in the Region 7-AAAAA opener for both teams.

Adams’ 4-yard touchdown on fourth-and-1 with 7:35 left was the final score of the game. His other TD also covered 4 yards.

Adams, who has committed to Maryland, was limited to 79 yards in 24 attempts, but Norcross’ defense kep Mill Creek from threatening. The Blue Devils recorded eight sacks and held the Hawks to nine first downs and 47 yards rushing, 143 yards total.

It was the first shutout of another Gwinnett team for Norcross since beating Peachtree Ridge 27-0 in 2004.

Both teams are 2-1 overall. Each made the playoffs from 7-AAAAA last season.

• Peachtree Ridge 25, Northview 14: Trailing 14-13 at half, Peachtree Ridge’s Chris Sawdey took the first play of the third quarter 60 yards up the middle for a Lions score. The Lions’ defense limited host Northview to 64 yards in the second half as Peachtree Ridge (2-1, 1-0) won to open Region 7-AAAAA play.

Peachtree Ridge marched 50 yards in eight plays on its opening possession, scoring when Brandon Stanley spun into the end zone on a fourth-and-goal from the 1. Northview (0-3, 0-1) answered as running back Samoir Patrick lined up wide and caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Sid Harrelson.

Patrick struck again in the second quarter on a 16-yard run in which he bounced to the outside and dove for the pylon. The Lions’ Nick Lombardo hit tight end Connor Orr for a 10-yard score, but the kick failed to bring the halftime score to 14-13. A Lombardo to Mitchell Williford 7-yard slant in the third quarter finished the scoring.

The Lions rushed for 213 yards, including Sawdey’s 83 on seven carries. Northview’s Harrelson was 8-for-15 for 139 yards and a touchdown.

• South Gwinnett 52, Meadowcreek 18: Meadowcreek’s Sean Frezell threw for 470 yards and three touchdowns, but it was not enough to overcome a balanced South Gwinnett attack.

Frezell’s first two passes were intercepted by the Comets’ Zach BoBo. Derrick Brown scored from 32 yards out after the first interception, and BoBo returned the second 28 yards for a touchdown on Meadowcreek’s next play, and 22 seconds into the game, the Comets found themselves up 14-0.

Kerry Jividen scored on a 1-yard run midway through the first period to put South Gwinnett up 22-0 before Meadowcreek got on the board with an 87-yard pass from Frezell to Quenton Brown as the quarter ended.

Aaron Wimberly caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Jividen midway through the second period to put South up 29-6.

But Meadowcreek’s Jamel Hamler pulled down two scoring passes from Frezell to keep the Mustangs close at the break, 32-18.

South slammed the door in the third quarter. Brown scored on a 5-yard run with nine minutes left, then Michael Bradford scored on a 19-yard run with 1:43 left in the period.

Kenneth Ricks got a 1-yard touchdown run late in the game for the Comets.

Frezell broke his own school record with 470 yards and three touchdowns on 24-for-38 passing with three interceptions. But the Mustangs’ net rushing total was minus-23 yards.

Brown carried 12 times for 140 yards and two scores for the Comets, while Wimberly added 120 yards on 16 carries. Ricks added 90 yards on seven carries.

Cobb

• Walton 41, Campbell 28: Michael Boydston carried 34 times for 296 yards and five touchdowns for Walton (3-0), including three scores in the second period. Tay Wright tossed a pair of touchdowns for Campbell (1-2), and Jerome Whiteman added a 50-yard touchdown run.

• Etowah 21, Kennesaw Mountain 12: Ryan Boykin scored on an 80-yard touchdown run, and Jordan Padget returned an interception for a touchdown to key the win for Etowah (3-0), which also got a pair of sacks from Ishmail White. Kennesaw Mountain fell to 2-1.

Gwinnett

• Holy Innocents’ 7, Wesleyan 6: Quarterback Will Allen scored on a 32-yard run in the third quarter to lead Holy Innocents’ (1-2) past Wesleyan (1-2). Allen had 16 rushes for 76 yards and completed 6 of 14 passes for 78 yards.

• Lakeview Academy 35, Hebron Christian 6: Lakeview (1-1) got touchdowns from five different players, including Nick Saye’s 30-yard return of a blocked punt and Haughton Carswell’s 30-yard run.

• North Forsyth 24, Duluth 8: Jory Walsh scored on runs of 33 and 3 yards to lead North Forsyth (2-1, 1-0 in 7-AAAAA) past Duluth (0-3, 0-1). Walsh finished with a total of 118 yards rushing. Cory Reins kicked a 37-yard field goal, and Tyler Slaton scored on a 4-yard run for North Forsyth.

• North Gwinnett 35, South Forsyth 0: Mike Tamburo passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another in the second quarter for North Gwinnett (2-1), which won for the second straight week. Tamburo completed 10 of 20 passes for 135 yards, and Tyler Jarry added 109 yards on nine carries for the Bulldogs, who scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to break the game open.

Zach Humphries’ 17-yard interception eturn on the first play of the second half made the score 28-0, and Raahmil Brantley’s 8-yard run completed the scoring.

• Parkview 28, Berkmar 7: Brandon Jacobs scored three touchdowns for the Panthers (2-1), who won their second straight, and Taron Squires had the other Parkview touchdown. Bryce Rosser added a pair of interceptions.

North Fulton

• Milton 41, Wheeler 0: Toney Williams carried 18 times for 211 yards and three touchdowns as Milton (2-1) blanked Wheeler. Williams scored from 3, 25 and 57 yards, and Taj Harris added a 58-yard run for the Eagles. Wheeler fell to 0-3.

• Roswell 37, Pope 21: Reid Suhr carried 31 times for 156 yards and four touchdowns for Roswell (2-1).

DeKalb

• Miller Grove 34, Stone Mountain 12: Gerald Hatchett scored on runs of 12, 13 and 19 yards for Miller Grove (1-1-1).
