Q&A / PHILIP LUTZENKIRCHEN, Lassiter: On new coach: 'Everyone is really excited'

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Football is about to get more fun for Lassiter tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen. Despite back-to-back 3-7 campaigns, spirits are high at Lassiter, thanks to new coach Chip Lindsey, who previously was offensive coordinator for national powerhouse Hoover in Alabama.

Lindsey likes to throw the ball, and the 6-foot-4, 240-pound Lutzenkirchen will be more than willing to catch it.

Lindsey's offense is the same system Lutzenkirchen will run when he gets to Auburn, where he committed in May.

Lutzenkirchen recently sat down with staff writer Glenn LaFollette to discuss the upcoming season.

Q: It's summer, so you should have had some time off. What's been going on?

A: I've actually been pretty busy. We've been working out as a team from 8 in the morning through 11, Monday through Thursday. That's kept me busy. I've been working a little at a baseball complex. That's really kept me busy, and I've been to a couple Auburn football camps.

Q: No family vacations?

A: We have a lake house up on Lake Hartwell. We've been up there a bit, just relaxing. Just riding out on the boat with my sisters and having a good time with my family.

Q: Seen any good summer films?

A: Not really. I saw "Semi-Pro" with Will Ferrell. That was funny. "Bucket List" was kind of disappointing. I thought it would be a little bit better with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson.

Q: Your coach knows something about star power, since his last school was featured on MTV's "Two-A-Days." Did you ever watch the show?

A: Yes, I saw it. He [Lindsey] is a good guy. Our program, our school, kind of has been in a rough situation the last couple years. He's come in with a good attitude. And it's refreshing as a player to see someone come in with such a good attitude. He wants to turn the program around, and everyone is just really excited.

Q: What's it like having a coach come from a school like Hoover?

A: It's a little bit different since he's coming from such a high-quality program known for winning in the past and its dominance. It's just a cool thing for our school, which hasn't been a perennial powerhouse like that. We just have all this energy and excitement from everyone at the school.

Q: What's he like in practice?

A: He just has an enthusiasm about him that is hard not to like. All of our practices so far, he's just [been] really upbeat.

Q: Does this raise your expectations for this season?

A: The coaches expect us to do well. You never go into a season having doubts. But as a team, we've kind of gotten together and talked. We want to win every game. Anything other than that is a disappointment. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Q: Are you happy to have your college plans out of the way?

A: Yes, definitely. I just wanted to be able to focus this summer on coming together with the team. It was a totally different system, so I wanted to be in there without any distractions. Really just to be a better teammate and player for my coaches. But I'm definitely 100 percent Auburn.
