Stephenson fills gridiron schedule with Ware CountyStephenson High was finally able to add a 10th game to its up coming football schedule when it agreed to a two-year contract with Ware County.
Jaguars coach Ron Gartrell said the team will play both games in Waycross instead of the traditionally home-and-home series.
"I think it is a good situation for us," Gartrell said. "We are going to treat it like it was playoff game. We are looking forward to it."
The game is scheduled for Sept. 12 at Memorial Stadium in Waycross. Last season, Ware lost to Northside-Warner Robins 20-14 at home in the Class AAAA finals.
Stephenson was left with only nine games on its schedule when Columbus decided not to play. Gartrell had hoped to add another game to keep the team from going three weeks without a game.
"This works out well because we have an open week afterward before going into our region schedule," Gartrell said.
Since 2000, teams from the area haven't done well on the road against Ware County. The Gators have defeated Banneker (29-7, 2008), Washington (10-7, 2004), Douglas County (56-29, 2003) and Sandy Creek (42-17, 2002) in the postseason.
