Lovett prevails in thriller over McIntosh

After all the strategy of the previous 52 minutes, it was a simple powerful shot that finally ended it Saturday.
That low rocket by Lovett's Owen Green with 3:32 left in overtime ended the game dramatically and gave the Lions a 7-6 win over McIntosh to claim the school's second boys lacrosse state title.
"It was a typical underhand, bottom low, far and away corner," said Green, who scored a team-high three goals in the game. "I shot it, and thanks" — here he pointed skyward — "it went in."
For a short time, it looked like it might never have that chance.
After Lovett jumped out to a 4-1 lead halfway through the second quarter, the Lions had all the momentum and appeared capable of running away with the game.
But the Chiefs chipped away at the lead, cutting it to 4-3 before halftime. Then, after a Lovett goal early in the third quarter, McIntosh held the Lions scoreless for nearly 20 minutes.
That drought gave the Chiefs enough time to take a lead of their own, as a D.J. Ward goal put them in front 6-5 with 3:32 left in the fourth quarter. It took an impressive individual effort from Lovett's North Winship to tie the score, as the junior drove into the middle of the defense and scored to tie the game with 2:27 on the clock.
Overtime wouldn't have been possible without that goal or without the Lions' poise during a difficult 20-minute scoring drought.
"We told the boys [going into overtime], 'We're not asking you to win; we're not asking you to do anything special. Just play your best,'" Lovett coach Jim Buczek said. "We had chances early to get some distance, and McIntosh is an unbelievable team. They reeled us in."
Goalie Fraser Perrett played well, turning away several McIntosh scoring opportunities, including a hard shot in the first overtime that could have ended the game. The senior's 17 saves underscore what he means to the team.
"Fraser Perrett is, without a doubt, the best big-game goalie in the state," Buczek said.
Brennan Ott had three goals for the Chiefs, who were playing in their first state final in the program's fourth year of existence.
