Jury selection in Schrenko trial begins
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Jury selection is underway in the federal public correction case against Georgia’s former school Superintendent Linda Schrenko. Opening arguments are set for Monday. Schrenko is charged with money laundering and embezzlement for allegedly stealing more than $600,000 in federal funds from summer 2002 through fall 2004. Prosecutors say she funneled about half the money to her unsuccessful campaign for governor and used about $9,300 for a face-lift. The funds were supposed to be used to purchase computer services for two state schools for the deaf and the Governor’s Honors Program. Schrenko and two co-defendants —- Atlanta computer executive A. Stephan Botes and his company’s chief financial officer, Peter Steyn of Woodstock —- have pleaded not guilty.
