Campbell trial gets under way Monday

PREVIOUS ACTION: Lawyers for former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell and U.S. prosecutors last week pared down a pool of more than 230 potential jurors to the 7 men and 5 women who will decide if he is guilty of corruption.

WHAT HAPPENS MONDAY: Both sides will have 90 minutes for their opening arguments at the Richard B. Russell Federal Building in downtown Atlanta. Prosecutors will try to prove that Campbell ran City Hall as a criminal enterprise between 1994 and 2002, taking bribes, illegal campaign contributions and evading taxes. Campbell’s legal team will stress their client’s innocence and say prosecutors are basing a weak case on the word of ex-cons who made deals for lesser sentences in exchange for testimony against the former mayor.

WHAT’S NEXT: After opening arguments, witnesses will be called to testify. The trial is expected to last six to eight weeks.
