Georgia bucking the trend?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Early returns show Democrats picking up seats in the U.S. House and Senate. But it appears Georgians are on their way to putting even more Republicans in state office - for the first time adding the lieutenant governorship to the “R” column.
Why do you think this is happening? Are there specific reasons the state’s voters appear to bucking the trend?

Because Georgia just turned GOP in 2002 and 2004. It takes a few more years for people to realize how badly Republicans govern.
See: 2000 to 2006 nationally.
The state will trend back blue in the next decade with all the growth and transplants from the midwest and north.

It is true. When it rains in Georgia, Democrats stay at home. Also, it appears that many Georgians are out of touch with reality. The election results prove it! I guess we are in for four more years of no pay increases, higher insurance premiums, looking out for big business and Sonny making more land deals that make Georgia “sonnier” for him! Of course, we will all still be able to fish!

Georgia is bucking the trend because most of the people here eat up the FOX news/GOP force fed “boogyman syndrome”. These soccor moms think that Osama is lurking around the corner of their oversized gas guzzling SUV. They think that if they allow gay marrige that it will cause their husband to leave them and marry his best friend (or at least if he’s a pastor he’ll call some male escorts do meth and have a massage party)! Yes folks the neocons have done a great job of keeping the unimformed afraid and stupid here in this pathetic state of Georgia. Most rednecks here still think Iraq and 9/11 are tied together. How sad it is. Maybe that’s why your children are last in the nation when it comes to education. Those that think illegal immigration is an important topic and will make us safer are wearing blinders. Yes, the rednecks here are afriad and racist. It used to be of African Americans, now it’s us Yankees (this is the USA, not the confederate state of gomer pile), gays, and yes….HISPANICS! That’s right neocons. Get rid of them and watch the price of a house rise from $250,000 to $500,000! Watch what happens when you call Bubba to paint your house and it costs twice as much and comes out 3 times as bad! Good look red state. You will surely get what you are asking for. Last in education and last in the nation!

We Georgians have neglected our educational for too long. The end result is a lot of under-educated citizens easily duped by the amoral Republican establishment that is destroying this great nation by driving it into bankruptcy. The Republicans claim to be Christians, but Jesus healed the sick and fed the poor. Both of those actions are anathema to the “Conservative Repbulicans” running our country into the ground.

It doesn’t matter if a democrat or republican wins the election. They both have the “if it’s good for me, it’s good for everyone” mentality. The lack of liquor sales on Sunday is a prime example of this. Just because it is a religious day for some doesn’t mean it is for everyone else.
Neither party has any clear benefits over the other. It makes no difference who is in office, we will still have big government determining what is and isn’t good for us no matter what.

In analyzing the pattern of Georgia voters one must take into consideration the test scores of GA students compared to the other states. The students reflect the education of their parents. The second thing to keep in mind is the fact that Georgia is the buckle of the bible belt. They’re too busy worrying about gay marriages, homosexuality and lesbianism (including their own prophets), and following leaders who want to run government according to their own religious beliefs than learning how democracy works.

It’s not just Georgia - it’s the south, in general. Dems don’t have a clue from year to year who makes up their constituency. Try writing a platform for a party that represents every special interest in the country. Therefore, their platform becomes - not why vote for me - but why you should be voting against the republican. Look at Taylor’s campaign - and he’s getting obliterated tonight. On a national scale, the campaign is, “please vote against the war in iraq.” It’s precisely why Zell left the party - the dems suffer from a deficit of decency…

How very funny. If Georgians are voting Republican it MUST be because of Republican trickery or the people are uneducated. Everybody just knows (well maybe its just the liberals who know) that the Democrats have the best vision of what this country should be like since they are all “enlightened” and the rest of the country is composed of imbeciles.
Gee whiz! Try getting down off that high horse before you fall off and hurt yourself.

Because the people of GA realize that the republicans have a plan to move our great state forward. They see the progress that Sonny has made in the last four years (specifically in the areas of health care, education, illegal immigration, and illegal drugs) and want four more years that are even better. I think it also has a lot to do with the grassroots efforts of so many people to get the republicans back in office; it raised public awareness of the truth.

As the Democrat-controlled Congress began to pass civil rights legislationin the 1960’s, the racists in Georgia became Republicans. Look at most native white Georgians who are now Republicans, and you will find that they were, at one time, Democrats. Talk to them a few minutes and you will see their racism start showing.

Good grief, the whining from the sore losers has reached a fevered pitch on this blog. The voters here in Georgia are happy with the way their state is being run, so they’ve brought back the Republicans for another go round. Wow. Everyone here must be posting from the Georgia 4th. There is life outside of the perimeter that thinks conservatively. If you think that it is because of education you must keep in mind that you need to be 18 to vote and the Republicans have only been in control for 4 years. What kind of educating where those Democrats doing in the previous 14 years? Also don’t think this trend will change. Georgia is becoming more conservative because of the people moving here realizing you can have a clean and safe community with low taxes by voting Republican. Finally, lets remember our history folks. Can you tell me the difference between a ‘Blue Dog’ Democrat and a Republican? ‘Blue Dogs’ ran Georgia and they are not much different from a Republican.

It is truly amazing to see such unkind words because Georgia is bucking a trend? At the end of the day, the trend will not have shifted by that much as far as the national georgraphic goes. The sad part is the harshness of words used for fellow Americans over an election. It makes one wonder if we are really on the same side. When things are said and done, we are ultimately in the same boat in the same country. If we cannot respect each others opinions over an election, we will be in serious trouble when real adversity arises. People need to respect others and get over it if they don’t agree. It’s really not that hard.

Simple. States that have vibrant economies are controlled by Republicans and are Union Free. Less restrictions on business = higher employment and a stronger state economy. States that are dying, see: Michigan, CA, Ohio, IL, NY are run by Democrats, pay huge taxes and have substantial Union Labor.
Democrat voters still haven’t figured it out. State economic systems are determinded by state gov’t. Not the Fed.

Interesting that the trend towards the Republican party in Georgia is a result of “poor, idiotic morons” when the majority of the people who vote Republican in Georgia come from some of the most affluent, well-educated portions of the state (i.e. North Fulton). Meanwhile, the Democratic electorate hails from the poor, uneducated areas of Georgia (South Fulton).

All the extremely harsh comments above from Democrats illustrate one reason that they have fallen into obscurity. While the Republicans are far from perfect, they are not as uniformly obnoxious and overbearning as the Democrats. There’s still a wide streak of civility in the majority of Georgians, and they find the Republicans to be less repulsive than the Democrats. I think they are right. Bill

The voting machines are not reliable in the respect that the machines are terribly vunerable t , and probably used for, manipulation by the private companies who make and sell them to the states, and are not necessarily ethical in their business practices. This has already been proven to have happened in some states previously since the introduction of these machines. I would like to be able to verify my vote on the internet after I vote, at the secretary of state website, just as I can verify my voter registration there. Since I can’t, well, who knows.

Of course the $100 “gift card/bribe” he passed for us this year (an election year) helped me tremedously. Let’s see if we get one for the next school year!!! I only spent $500 out of pocket to prepare for classes. Do the people who constantly harp about GA’s test scores know that NO private school scores are in the mix, nor are any of the home schooled kids scores in the mix. And in regard to SAT scores—look at the percentage of kids who take the test. A much larger % of GA high school kids take the test than other states. Maybe, like VA, we should only let the smart “college-bound” kids take the tests.

Democrats aren’t bankrupt of ideas, Repubs just spend so much time shouting one-liners no one can hold a conversation about issues. People have forgotten that they are the party that is moving to take away the very rights so many of or predecessors fought and died for.
By allowing the same people to continue to hold office, the citizens have voted to allow more jobs to be outsourced out of the country, more emphasis on testing than education, less effort at conservation or finding new sources of energy. In short, we’ve gone backward.

The dems would be in a much different postion now if Barnes hadn’t did that all to please Jesse Jackson. Now the repubs have it all except for some meaningless offices like Ag comm, ect. In a way the old state flag destroyed those that destroyed it.

GA is bucking the national trend because the reps from this state have stayed true to their conservative base and ideals. Idiot elitist GOP reps in other states dug themselves into their own graves trying to make liberals happy which is a losing strategy. When other states truly elect conservatives, the GOP will regain the majority again. It will only take 2 years of the Democratic majority for them to shoot themselves in the foot when they show their true colors and screw up the economy. You all can call GOP voters ignorant, but time will show the opposite.

Come on folks, the highly arrogant George W. Bush wasn’t on the ballot. If he had been, even the poorly described “under-educated” among us would have kicked him to the curb. Most Georgians (yes, even those of us born and bred here)put some forethought into these matters. This is a mid-term election and many of the issues are local. We know how to vote. We don’t care about the national trend. And those of you who are putting so much focus on education, please rest assured that we know that education is an issue. And please spell properly.

Georgia Teacher, You are the reason my daughter is in private school. My wife worked in the public school system for 4 years and we can vouch by our own experience, teachers like you and incompetent public school administrators are the reason for our poor showing in the national education rankings. You refuse to allow school choice, thus eliminating competition and improving schools. Look in the mirror teachers. There are some good ones out there in public schools, but they are few and far between and are handcuffed by the incompetent school boards and administrators.

What a bunch of pathetic loser comments. Typical for the media led Deomcratic masses that cannot think for themselves.
Georgia is bucking the trend because Democratic corruption ran so deep in this state for two full decades that people grew tired of it. Democrats in the South also don’t have the backing of the big Labor Unions who protect lazy underachieving workers with the same gusto that they try to bring the overachievers back to the pack.
To hear Democrats in this state complain about corruption in the Republican party nationally just shows you how biased, close-minded, and hypocritical people can be. If an average citizen had done what McKinney did, we would be in jail serving time. If we had done what Campbell did, we would be in jail much longer.
And yes, I voted for Clinton because he was a good politician despite the poor decisions he made in his private life. Sadly, I do not feel the same about the majority of politicians, from both sides.
Georgia has only recently swung to the GOP, and low and behold, school ratings are going up. Crime stats, while thoroughly miserable are actullay much better than they were in the past when we constantly ranked just behind Camden and DC in capital crime rates. Now the media complains about being 16th and blames the GOP for it. Maybe the mass moronic Democratic party can fall for this media bias, but an intelligent person won’t.
As for National level, I sure won’t be voting for Bush .. unless Hitlary decides to run.
Last but not least, anyone who votes straight down a party line is doing this country a huge dis-favor. Don’t even vote. You are obviously not intelligent enough to actually look into the candidates and issues and make decent decisions. Both parties are rampant with craptastic candidates that continually get re-elected because people blindly vote straight down a party line. Sad and pathetic.

These rednecks think that republicans are good for business, yes they are, the richest 1% has gotten richer, but we added 9% more americans to the poverty level! The democrats left you a huge SURPLUS (THANKS CLINTON)! But now we have the biggest deficit in history (all thanks to the GOP running all branches of Gov’t)! It is really funny watching you Bubba’s and Bertha’s drive your gas guzzeling SUV’s with “W” stickers. All I have to say is you certainly got what you asked for. If you have a son or daughter, I hope they are in Iraq since you support this war (and have from the start), because Iraq attacked us, right? How many terrorist attacks were there in iraq before 2003? Zero How many now? One every 15 minutes. Well regardless of you “victory in the “backwards” state. I’m sick of hearing all these “poor, uneducated idiot” comments. If you think all Georgians are idiots, then feel free to pack up and move tomorrow! There are many well educated people in my area and our area is heavily republican.
The GOP is doing so well in Georgia because Georgia has a good economy and the changes that have been made in the last few years have been for the good. It took a while, but we cleaned out the narrow minded good ole’ boys who had been in control since before I was born in the late 50’s.
Governor Perdue ran a very upbeat, positive campaign and people responded. Mark Taylor had nothing to run on, so he drummed up a bunch of crap and tried to make Sonny look bad. Sorry “Big Guy” but you are way off base. Enjoy your retiremnt down in “All-benny”.

Georgians believe if some-one punches you in the mouth you should not just turn away and do nothing, as the Democratic President before Bush was elected. 9/11 was planned before Bush went into office because they thought they could continue to get away with it and have nothing done aboub it. To a large extent the military bases in Georgia helps this economy very much. Also the Democratic Party is made up of many, many liberals and Georgians don't believe that way. Robert JeffriesBy Jim J

Georgia voters vote Republican because they care more about whether gays can get married or pregnant girls can get abortions than whether their kids die in Iraq or how our government is going to look financially in the near future. It’s amazing how Dems resort to name calling (i.e., rednecks, knuckle-draggers, bible thumpers, etc) to explain their failures.
1) The economy performed well under Clinton because he was kept in line by what was then a well led Republican congress that curtailed excess entitlement spending.
2) Clinton had the benefit of following an expected recession from Bush Sr. giving into, who now folks?…Democrats and raised taxes. Go figure.
3) “Clinton’s Economy” was a farce based on the over-inflated dot com hype.
Democrats (more specifically, liberal Democrats) think those with more money than others are keeping others from having the same chance. So they call for more taxes on richer folks. And who ends up whining when they lose their jobs because the “rich” folks that help provide the jobs have to cut them.
Without resorting to name calling, I believe the liberals on this page are exposing themselves as what they are trying to call conservatives. Thank God, there is GOP (specifically conservative GOP) control of the state.
Ane one more thing. Where are the biggest money wasting, worst performing school systems? Blue counties/districts. Again, go figure.

Georgia is bucking the trend because of the various amendments presented in this election called to primarily republican voters. Georgia has always been divided into two groups- Atlanta voters and Georgia voters. The various amendments drew in different voter groups out to the polls. For example, Amendment 2 brought out the sportman to defend hunting and fishing who overall vote republican or look to who Zell Miller or NRA endorses. If no other incentives exist on the ballot and less coverage is shown in the various media sources, you will have a lower voter turn out. As for me, I turned up to the polls to protect hutning and fishing. See you all next election.

GA voters have something to say in this election: we are proud - or maybe, we are: scared of the future, we are scared of gay men and women among us, and we don’t seem to know how to challenge our white male leaders who have sent thousands of beautiful young Americans to their slaughter in Iraq. Georgians, the majority who vote, are scared - and ironically, think aloud they are so strong and brave. History will judge them as brutally as it has done Alabama and Miss. on matters such as civil rights and democratic freedoms for all Americans including women. GA voters - you are as blind as you often act, look and speak. If only Jesus were among us today — to see you blindly turn your back on those who oppose war and discrimination. Shame on Goergia.

I am a native Georgia who went to Georgia Public Schools from 1965-1976. During those years our educational system was that great and we were in a chokehold of democratic control. We are finally seeing some improvements in our educational system but it takes time to recover from the years of neglect.
I’ve lived in this state all my life (so far) and I’ve watched it change in many ways. We have had an influx of transplants and people from various areas and backgrounds. Governor Perdue has done a great job of attracting business to our state which helps our economy. To all of you who think we’re a backward, redneck state and a laughingstock for the rest of the country, why did you take a job and move to our great state? There must have been something that attracted you here besides our great weather.
We need people working together to move forward. If you want to see change, then be the change you want to see in our state. Have you volunteered your time to tutor kids who need help with the SAT? Have you volunteered in your child’s school? Do you make your views known in a clear, polite way? If not, then don’t complain about our educational system.
If you can’t see beyond that, then may I offer you a little cheese with your “whine”?

Georgia schools, particularly Dekalb, were the top of the heap nationally when CONSERVATIVE Democrats ran the state. A Democrat then is not a Democrat now.
It’s the conservative ideology that is winning, not the party affiliation. If the Republicans abandon the conservatives like the Democrats did, another party will emerge.
I personally believe the public school system is nearly beyond repair. This is due to entitlement minded folks that are now parents that expect the schools to be babysitters and then the administrators that don’t allow the teachers to hold students accountable. It also doesn’t help to have some folks serving as teachers for their own gain (i.e., just to have the summer off and the nice retirement). Kudos to the true teachers that have the students’ futures at heart. All other teachers need to find another profession. Hopefully, the conservative state goverment will start doing something about some of the teachers who have tenure that shouldn’t be teaching.
How about some school choice?

Georgia and the South in general have always had more in common with Republicans than Democrats. They are driven by religious dogma, intolerance, ignorance, the need to take revenge for any perceived wrong, and are very patricial. It will take a couple of generations before people finally realize they have been voting against their own best economic interests all these years. Maybe a few decades of Republican rule will finally finish what the Yankees started - the complete and total destruction of the South.

With an open Presidential election coming in 2008, it’ll be good to have the true colors of the liberals come through beforehand. Will help us make a more informed decision then.
One of the reasons the national debt is so high and we have the deficits is that the so-called Republicans that just got kicked out of leadership didn’t have the “pair” to cut the wasteful entitlements to all the non-working, non-productive welfare people I see walking around during the weekdays on the “Blue” county/district sidewalks in Dekalb county where I live.
These next two years will allow the conservatives to finally realize what is important and what is not. My family barely makes $100k with my wife and I both working 2 jobs (each). I hardly call that rich. If those tax cuts are rolled back, we will be hurting. Open up your eyes liberals, you’ll get hurt too (unless you have some government handout or entitlement program - or a trust fund like Teddy Kennedy).
Congratulations to the liberals. They beat a bunch of impotent RINO’s (Republicans In Name Only). With the distaste the country had for these RINO’s, you should have gained at least 50 seats. But, you are so void of positive ideas, you could only muster a slight majority. Kind of like accepting the status quo of our public schools…just enough to get by.

Wow! What serious sour grapes going on from the left here. You guys are giving a first class demonstration of “elitist liberals.” You seem to think that you are the only “intelligent” people. Well here is some news for you. Those schools you complain about - well until four years ago, they were in a state run by Democrats for over a century. So if we have stupid people in this state because of the schools (a preposterous notion), then that would be the fault of Democrats.
Perhaps the reason that Georgia is supporting the GOP has to do with realizing that the Republicans provide the better approach to our issues. The Democrats have no real solutions as far as I am concerned. They just seem to be running a campaign of simply taking advantage of frustration with dissatisfaction of the GOP (I am strong conservative who is dissatisfied with many of the Republicans because they have strayed too far away from its traditional conservative roots). They are not attracting voters because of their innovation ideas and proposals. Unfortunately, many people are not political savvy enough (and this is NOT a function of intelligent) to discern the difference between the attractive sounding positions offered by the Dems during the campaign and the very real chance that the Pelosi-led House will go off the deep end. I think that could wind up benefiting the GOP but fortunately, Georgians are just smart enough and grounded enough in our conservative values to not fall for these political games.

Yeah, we should be like the Republicans and spend-and-steal from future generations of Americans to lower our taxes!
Current National Debt: $8,581,730,307,976 (not counting the war in Iraq, another $2,000,000,000,000). And it’s 90% Republican Made!

Let’s face it. The people have chosen the greaterer of two evils. Outside metro Atlanta Georgia is highly concentrated redneck state that facilitates racisim and big business. To me Atlanta is not even part of Georgia. I look at the facts: GA is the meth lab of the south and we all know who created meth (broke redneck bikers who could not afford cocaine so they made their own drugs). GA has the highest concentration of sex offenders and child predators (not saying that all anglo’s are child predators, just 98% of child predators are anglo - nothing new they been doing it for years, just now getting caught).
Maybe it’s the fumes from the meth labs that got people following the crowd. Vote for the issue that a person represents, not the party they are a part of.
Don’t be fooled with this “keeping you safe b-s”. Next time you go to the gas station and fill up, guess who own it? It’s not Bubba, it’s Ahkmed. Yup, the same Ahkmed you call a terrorist is the same one selling you gas, laughing at you when you cry about filling up your 4x4 with rebel flags and a big dumb G on it. Don’t worry about when you loose your job cause the company sent the factory overseas for cheap labor. Ahkmed needs a good kraka to mop the floors.

It take more than a century to elect a Republican governor.
It took ten years to sign on to the 1994 Republican Revolution.

This morning my mom told me that my sister was telling her to be sure to vote or else the democrats were going to get in control (I must admit, I didn’t vote (first time since I became eligible in 1986) because I didn’t particularly like the choices for governor and I knew my house district would stay republican irregardless, which it did). I told my mom to tell her it didn’t matter what happened in Georgia that more than likely the democrats would win control of the U.S. House, possibly the U.S. Senate and alot the governorships. I told her Georgia would stay republican, but the rest of the country would most likely go democrat and no matter how her or I voted it wasn’t going to make a difference. Turns out … it didn’t … atleast not in the nationwide scheme of things.

The war in Iraq is hardly a blip on the radar screen when compared to the welfare/entitlement state.

Reading some of the input from this blog is hilarious.
Most of the posts in this blog state Georgians are stupid and idiotic. The only individuals that appear to lack in intelligence are the majority who have posted in the blog “crying” about the republican success in this state. The success is based upon a true understanding of the electorate as well as understanding a growing majority of people in this state were not raised in this state and have brought their beliefs and experiences from other parts of the country. The state of Georgia has a strong a vibrant economy than most of the country. I am originally from the midwest, and right now, the midwest is dying (rust belt). States that create more burdens for businesses loose those very businesses that are very important to the states ecomomy. The great thing about the diversity of Georgia is that is one or two major companies fail, you have several smaller, growing companies to takes it’s place.
States that can adapt quickley, will continue to grow and be a destination for those from other areas. There are reasons why people are fleeing in great numbers from the upper east coast, midwest, and other parts of the south. Georgia is growing, and unfortunatley, based upon the input from people in this blog, do not like the positive changes that are taking place.
There are problems with both parties on a national level and both parties try to take advantage of the fears of people who might not know any better. Local state elections hit closer to home and typically, most voters tend to be more familiar with those candidates and will elect them if they believe their contributions will benefit them. State elections effect each and every Georgian more so than federal elections. And right now, a large majority of voters believe in the message of the Georgia Republican party.
And in reality, more will get done in the next two years locally than they will on a federal level.

My,my…
Even when the Democrats gain the majority in the house they spew venom.
Perhaps the reason that Georgia bucked the trend is strong leadership at the local and state level.
Our state budget is back in the black. Teachers are happier and better paid. Unemployment is down, the hope scholarship is better funded for education. The Governor is competant and there have been very few issues.
Here’s a thought. Rather than call people idiots, rednecks, ignorant, etc. maybe you could consider extending an olive branch. Look for common agreements and build from there. After-all, at least in this state, your still the minority.
As for those of you who dream of more folks from up North moving down South and changing the state. Your dreaming. People from the Northeast and Midwest have been moving here for 30 years. The state went Republican just four years ago. Your logic doesn’t work.
Congratulations. Your party has had a big night. Hopefully they have learned enough while out of power to make a positive difference and govern with dignity. If not, they will likely be out in two years.
Try and be positive. Try not to insult, you never know, independants like myself might take you a little more seriously.

Georgians still don’t take the right to vote seriously. When voters choose a candidate because he dropped 20grand in the offering plate at their church that is sad. When votes are cast based on fabrications from a unqualified candidate who says their opponent is a racist amongst other unsubstantiated rumors that is sad. When voters accept a fifth of rot gut and a chicken dinner for their vote that is sad. Until Georgians wake up and decide that their vote is not for sale weak leadership will rule! Be ashamed. Luckily Mark Taylor’s money wasn’t enough! For the last 3 years political pundits and pollsters have been telling him that he could not win! An earlier poster hit the nail right on the head: Many Georgia voters care more about other people’s sex acts (and whether they’re being adequately punished for them) than they do about real issues. It’s rather creepy, really.
Then, of course, you have a lot of well-off — and well-educated — citizens who believe Democrats want to seize their wealth. They simply care more about cutting their taxes than they do about civil liberties, personal autonomy, the environment, or social justice.
Georgia as a whole just has different priorities.

To you folks who have said “Delta is ready when you are”, I have this to say. You remind me of the people who were posting signs and stating in other media not very long ago “America, love it or leave it”. Well, I disagreed with that statement then and I disagree with the current sentiments now. I choose to stay in my beloved country back then and I chose to stay here in Georgia to fight, in my own way, against the oppression and the systematic reductions of our freedoms foisted on us by the current administration in Washington and the continuing malfeasance demonstrated by the Georgia government, whether it be Democrat or Republican. In this State, the “Good Old Boys” rule whatever their politics.
We need people in government, at ALL levels, to take care of OUR concerns, to do OUR bidding, to look after the common good. ALL of these elected officials, be it city, county, state or federal work for US. We are supposed to be running the show, people. It’s time we take charge. Just wake up and pay attention to what’s going on. Please.

Atlanta Born, if you think Jim J.’s comments constitute racism, you show you have no understanding of what racism is. Seems like it is still a little grenade that liberals like to toss at people in hopes of smearing them. Well, it does not work as effectively anymore. Just because people do not agree with left-learning politics does make them racist. It is a tired insult that lacks the impact it used to have because true racism is so much more rare these days. Time to come up with a new smear.

The most corrupt individuals are in the church and are always trying to preach to someone when they are jacked up to begin with. The democrats did a horrible job campaigning. Like majority of Americans, I do not vote along party lines. Rather, I vote for the individual who I think will serve better. However, I must admit in the past I voted for Democrats 75% of the time. But I was so disgusted by the campaign strategy that I heard from the democrats that I voted for more Republicans this time than normal. Mark Taylor led the way with his attack ads without touching on any issues. And then the mail pieces that I received and the radio ads that I heard were ads that were trying to scare me into voting democrats rather than discussing issues. The sad thing is that the democrats are losing their major supporters such as myself, a black person.

Why is it that the rest of the country now realizes that voting for the GOP has actually HURT the country? The last few elections they followed their church’s advice and elected these neocons and the country is much much worse off because of it. Georgia on the other hand has become MORE of a GOP cheerleader. People around the nation have had enough of the lies and the hypocrasy (Delay, Reed, Abromoff, Lott, Foley, Hastert, Cunningham, Ney…etc…way too many to mention). Remember your fine moral leaders like Gingrich and Livingston? I thnk they were….gasp! CHEATING on their wives….oh my! Hey, I’m glad that you love going to church, and that you think that being pro-life means, don’t have an abortion, but dead Iraqi’s due to an illegal war are COLLATERAL DAMAGE! Post the ten commandments in court house when only TWO of the ten are actually laws in this nation (thou shall not kill, and thou shall not steal). If the other’s were laws (like coverting thy neighbor’s wife) there would be a lot of GOP politicians, and pastors in prison right now! The things that are important to you:immigration, instead of education. Ban gay marrige instead of being like jesus and loving thy neighbor. You are a very very racist state. Hispanics and gays are the new african americans in your eyes. At least stand up and admit it. They country voted last night to move forward. we are one of the few states that understand that Democrats are just out to appease terrorists, and cut and run. They spout about their utopian ideas but dont tell everyone how much all of these ideas will cost tax payers. All Democrats want to do is increase the need for govt so people become more dependent on it, therefore increasing their power. For all those complaining about the Iraq war, that it accomplished nothing, just think about how many attacks have happened since the war began??? Not many has it, hard to terrorize when on the run. I think it’s important to separate state races from the Congressional races in the analysis. The issues managed by state officeholders are largely unrelated to those issues that caused the significant shift in Senate and House candidate voting nationally. The voters need dramatic reasons to unseat incumbants and there were none in this election. As for the national seats, blame the Dems for missing an opportunity to run better candidates - folks with the capability to inspire confidence. The right Dem candidates could have been successful here, bolstered by the general discontent with Washington politics.

I suppose stupid is as stupid does…but maybe the problem with GA democrats is who they run..
It appears that when given a choice between a real republican and a fake one, Georgians go for the real thing.
Mark Taylor, Cathy Cox ( and for that matter Harold Ford Jr.) should have learned that they do nothing to garner strong support for themselves by throwing their core constituencies under the bus for that sake of trying to appeal to folks who will never vote for them anyway.
Georgia is generally OK economically, but it’s teetering. Delta isn’t so ready to fly yankee’s back home …It’s in bankruptcy and barely making it. The housing market has dropped off tremendously( and we were no where near a “bubble ” market)Have you tried to sell a house lately??? GM Doraville is about to close, Ford Hapeville already has. AT&T’s pickup of Bellsouth anf the Koch acquisition of Ga Pacific will mean the loss of a large number of jobs in Atlanta.
This state needs strong investment from the presence of new american and international corporations, small businesses and the people who work for them, an immediate end to the taxation of retirement income, better schools that inspire children to want to learn instead of force feeding them test taking skills at the expense of class instruction, and a desire to stop meddling with marginal social issues like gay marriage or adoption ( the last form of “Jim Crow style” legislation), public smoking bans, and the ten commandments in the courthouses and abortion.
I hope the Governor is successful…I didn’t vote for him, but I wish him well. If he starts messing with the social stuff, I’ll be at the head of the line to kick his party to the curb in ‘08

You know! Some of these folks might have a point about poor education, but they need to look in the mirror first. Just read some of these comments and see all the grammatical errors and misspellings. You folks should get some education first. Then speak up. One of these idiots is a teacher. I think that speaks for itself! He/she is part of the problem.

I have an idea…why don’t all of those people who think so little of everyone else in Georgia leave and go somewhere else? If Georgia is so backwards and we aren’t prospering under our system then why are so many people coming here to live and try to find work?

Yes Mr Ecko, you are racist. When you go to the grocery can you tell the difference of might might be here legally or illegally? No, that would be impossible, so you probably assume they are illegals. They come here that way because we make it easy for people to come here from Canada, but hard for Mexicans. They actually are fueling this economy in Georgia in ways that you have no clue or idea about. The reason Georgia has a better economy is because we all came here to MAKE it better. Us Yankees, the hispanics, etc. WE are the ones that have created the jobs here. This is our country, as stated last night, this is mot the “Confederate State of Gomer Pile”. This is the USA, and we my friends are at the bottom of the list. We won the war. One of the first things i noticed when i moved here 7 years ago was your obsession with the civil war down here. Up north where I’m from, no one ever ever talks about, we don’t care. It’s our country, we won. You belong to us. We don’t need your permission to be here, we beat you and it the south was ours for the taking. Talk about sore losers? The was was over 140 years ago! We are talking about an election last night that we (democrats) won. Georgia just happened to not “get the picture” of what has been wrong with the GOP over the past 6 years!

The education rankings are based on SAT scores. Its a known fact that the higher ranked states SATs are inflated because only college bound students take the test. In Georgia, every student takes the SAT. Thats the reason for the difference. Of course, that would take a bit of knowledge and research and most people believe everything they read in a newspaper.

Hey HappyRepublican, We make grammer mistakes and typos because this is a “BLOG” not a book report or novel. i know when I type in blogs my brain moves faster then my fingers. There is no reason to go back and proof read. You should get the point. And my point is, you live in the USA, and you LOST, so why are you so happy? it’s time to investigate Dubya, Cheney, Rummy, Rove, etc. Let the new Iran-Contra/Water Gate hearings begin. it’s time my friends! Impeach Bush! Impeach Cheney! Oh, and by the way, the mastermind of the gay marrige bans- Karl Rove….IS GAY!

I love it when out-of-state pundits always know what’s best for us. I’m sure, if asked, they know nothing about the issues or the platforms of the candidates in our state, they just know Democrats and Repblicans and that’s how they vote. And they call US naive. And to those who think the Republicans are over-sensitive on terrorism… you’ve got to be kidding. Did you sleep through 9/11 or was it just that it’s only relevant if someone you personally knew was devastated by it? There’s good merits for and against our strategy in Iraq, but if anyone thinks that terrorism is a overhyped threat has their head in the sand.

Instead of wasting your energy taking sides as democrats and republicans, stop bashing each other and being so harsh with your comments and calling each other names. Our country was founded with the individual right to vote (and we all live with the outcome because if we do not all get out to vote the outcome if the final result)— if you do not like the outcome, do something to change it. If you do not like the education system in Georgia, get out of your house and do something to help, be a tutor, quit calling people stupid because it makes you look stupid - as Forest Gump said - Stupid is as Stupid does! Complainers and namecallers never get anywhere, they are just taking away oxygen and airspace and wasting precious time that could be spent on solving a problem.
All these soapboxes and negative comments with no solutions. Get off your duff, quit cutting each other down and do something about the problems or be quiet!
All democrats are not jerks and all republicans are not RIGHT WING wierdos. All Christians are not the way you decribe them either! But, remember we all will be held accountable one day for our actions when we die and God will ask, what did you do to help someone else and make the world a better place. How will you answer? Quit complaining and telling someone else to do something - do something yourself to change the situation and help make it better - AND STOP BLAMING SOMEONE ELSE IF YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING YOUR SELF - WE ARE LAZY in AMERICA. Always expecting everyone else to solve our problems, when we do nothing ourselves to help each other. All we do is call each other names and point fingers at groups, parties, each other thinking it will get better! Some of the people writing on these blogs sound as if they need therapy the way they write about their feelings about Christians and their hatred for their fellow man - get some help if that is really the way you feel - your anger is horrible. I know people can be cruel and hateful, but not all Christians and Americans act the way your are decribing democrats, republicans or Georgians or Christians. Too bad that there is such hatred out there against each other instead of trying to do something about the problems and fix them. If you hate the source of the words that bad, you need to get therapy!!!! All these comments/namecalling we do with each other in this blog are why the rest of the nation thinks that people in Georgia are some of the names listed in the blogs. Maybe if we quit acting the we are to each other in this blog, we would not have this reputation anymore inside or outside of the state and our education rankings would increase on test scores and in our publice image!

Hey:
Why is Georgia bucking the national trend? I will tell you why. It is because the Georgia election was stolen by the use of tampered election machines. There have been reports of people pushing their election computer tab for Taylor and Perdue name was appearing. Many people who were not paying attention to it were quickly pushing their selection and moving to select the next candidate. The final tally for governor was absurd and questionable. How can we check. That’s the point we can’t!!! We have no way to check the voting irregularities that occurred. With Cathy Cox being vindictive after her loss to Taylor, I can easily see her office working to skew the election and working with Perdue political people. Well, it worked. The national trend should have been reflected in Georgia with Democrats winning most of the seats in the state. However, with the evil that is existing in our democracy in stealing elections will one day lead to anarchy. I hope not in my life time. But something have to be done about this in the state of Georgia. We deserve something better than this. We fight wars wanting other countries to have democracy. Saying that this is the best way to go for their country. Yet in our country we are making democracy and free election a joke by stealing elections, in tampering with computer election machines, and having the wrong representative government before the people. God will handle this travesty in his own way. Go don’t like UGLY!!!!
God Bless.

Many of the posts made on this comment page illuminate an increasingly evident blemish in Georgia’s and America’s political process: the lack of civility in debate. Ad hominem attacks, strawman arguments, and mean-spirited stereotyping only highlight the empty rehtoric that may win some votes, but that leaves democracy without the intellectual and nobel foundations that are essential for its success. This lack of civility will only alienate the electorate and discourage many qualified candiates from running for office. I call on AJC and its readers to take stock of this sad state of political debate and begin to model interactions based on ideas, principles, and logic that may begin to influence a new generation of informed and responsible citizens.

LOL, Dave. Just made a quick check to see if you posted one more time before I head into work and you didn’t let me down! Great stuff and dead on, too. Thanks for such great posts.
It’s time to for us worry more about our educational resources, the elderly, and healthcare issues in this nation and less about spending $4 billion/week in Iraq. I don’t give a crap about who’s sleeping with who and who’s marrying who or what God one worships; I care about whether we’re going to have jobs, a healthcare net in place for the elderly and children, and a nation educated enough to keep up with China, Japan, and India in the future. This southern democrat is glad for the change - now let’s hope that the newly elected headed to Washington can work together for a change, just like all the rest of us have to do when we go off to work in the morning. If not, we’ll vote them out and replace them with ones that will.

As an SUV driving mom, I can honestly say that my vote had nothing to do with being scared about Osama hiding around the corner…Believe it or not, a person can disagree with this war and still vote Republican. I will never vote Democratic because they do not have the same fundamental beliefs that I do…They are pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, and pro-taking our guns away. Georgians on the whole are not afraid to stick to what they believe is right. We are a very religious state and will vote the way our conscious tells us and won’t let others bully us into compromising our beliefs. Even though there is a separation between church and state, our own private beliefs do affect the issues we support, and therefore, the people that we decide to vote for. In addition, Georgians also love our guns & hunting so we will vote for people that are not going to take them away from us. (and no, this doesn’t mean we are all rednecks just because we believe in a fundamental right to bear arms and protect our families). Also, as far as the schools go, people might not be getting the education that they should in this day and age, but children don’t vote. No one can comment on the lack of education in the older people because many people in Georgia are from different states. It makes no sense to say we are uneducated because of the Georgia school systems, when the adults represent every state in this country…

hey GeargiaMommy, Thanks for driving that SUV and keeping us dependant on foreign oil! I’m sure you really need to go four wheeling out of your driveway and off to kroger. Maybe you drop the kids of becasue terrorists may attack the bus! As far as guns, how many guns are used to kill innocent people in America everyday?Too many to count! How many guns are used to defend one’s home and family everyday? 0-1 maybe?! Yes that’s right hunting as a sport is FUN! You don’t believe in abortion, but shooting an animal and having it’s head hanging in your living room is OK?! As far as religion goes…here’s the point: Go to church, believe in god, and that if you donate money to your pastor’s escort habit every week that you will go to heaven when you die. Just don’t try to impose your religious views on me or anyone else that does not believe what you do. This country was NOT founded on religious principles (or should i say christian principles) it was settled and founded by people who wanted to get away from religious prosicution and “state sponsered” religion. If you wee born in Syria you would most likely be a muslim, if you were born in Israel, you would most likely be jewish, do you think you are right and people born where there parents lived are wrong? It’s time to heavly tax the churches. If a pastor is driving anything more then a 10 year old car and is living in anything more then a 1200 square foot house, then he his not a man of jesus, he is living off of your donations and you are too blind to see it. A real man of god, would make sure the money went to help the porr and needy, not to his SUV, gold watch and $700 suit! Tax the churches and tax all businesses owned by the churches! That will REALLY get our economy going. (though I wonder if paying for gay prostitues should remain tax exempt…what do you think)?

44% of GDOT road construction projects scheduled for 2006 never got started.
Sonny Perdue spends $15 million to build Kia a training center. $13+ million to grade the site & improve an interchange. Pays $113,000+ per job in tax breaks While 40% of the jobs are likely to be filed by folks living in Alabama.
While you sit in traffic.
His adminsitration also paid 10+ million to grade/prepare a site for a Chrysler truck plant that never got built. While he watched (2) metro Atlanta auto plants close.
Mr. Cathey was at the Hapeville plant to thank the workers for all they’ve done for Georgia… Where was Sonny?
At a ground breaking with Korean automakers. Who he bribbed to build here.
He doubled his net worth during the last 4 years? Have you…
Has your company dropped healthcare benefits and has forced you to buy your own? Didn’t happen to Sonny!
Hopefuly Sonny’s made enough $$$ in his 1st term that he can finally give some breaks to you & your children now that his Grandkids futures are well taken care of all at your expense.

Georgia is just a terrible place to live. Yet all of you over-emotional sensationalists are falling all over yourselves to live here. The state is growing like gang-busters because it’s people are backwards idiots. Right Get a clue guys. Georgia is a wonderful state, for many reasons. It has many great people, Democrat and Republican. This state is comprised of hard working, intellegent, and honest people. Once upon a time, the Democratic party actually represented the interests of people in this state. When they do again, the people of Georgia will vote Democrat.

What I’m reading is that as of last night Georgia voters are all cavemen… so what were we until 2002, when Democrats ran everything? No logic from my misguided friends on the left.
Sonny and the Georgia Republicans won because they used their power to effect. The Georgia GOP and the national GOP both gained real power in 2004. In Georgia they passed laws and measures people wanted, like immigration reform. National Republicans, once in power, did nothing for two years other than say ‘Democrats are worse.’
The Republican National Committee would be smart to send some people down here to see why Georgia bucked the national trend—pragmatic government, a largely positive campaign from Perdue, and co-opting conservative/moderate Democrats—the keys to victory. But instead they’ll spend $2 billion telling everyone how Hillary is a communist.

Ford Plant - Unions GM Plant - Unions Delta - Unions
Who do unions support? Democrats. Don’t blame Republicans for these plants closing. Companies can’t afford to provide endless pensions and overpriced wages forever. Hmmm, neither can government afford to provide endless welfare and force increased minimum wage on businesses.
Now, obviously Delta, GM and Ford have a lot more problems than just unions (i.e., overpaid CEO’s, etc). So now you see how I can cherry pick an issue (unions) to force forward my point, how about looking at the bigger picture instead of these tiresome blame the Republicans/blame the Democrats. Each side’s crap stinks. The first one that stops pointing fingers and starts providing solutions has my vote.
I’m sure if I try hard enough, I can blame a Democrat why my dog died of pneumonia last year and a Republican for me bouncing a check. Y’all grow up!

BC, It’s time to turn off the hate talk radio and learn some facts. go to CBO.gov and see for yourself Entitlements are not the cause of the record deficits under republican presidents. The entitlement programs are PROJECTED to run deficits in the future but they currently make the Bush budget numbers look better. Social Security and Medicare currently operate surpluses which are used to offset the massive budget deficits but are still not enough to cover all of the republican spending. in 2005 SS had a SURPLUS of $173.5 Billion while the budget had a deficit of $493.6 billion for a net loss of $318.3 billion. Where did all the money go? Corporate welfare.
Why are the people who claim to be prolife so willing to let people starve and die in the street rather than provide them support. I would much rather see my money go to “entitlement” programs that benefit people who have nothing than to corporate welfare. You really need to ask yourself why you hate poor people.

You know, bashing people that live in the same state as you is what shows pure ignorance, lack of understanding, and general lack of how to have productive debate. If you don’t like the education system, why aren’t you doing something? If you think everyone who votes in GA is a redneck on welfare, perhaps you need to drive around the state a little more. I’m sure the professionals who have worked hard for their education and resulting career might take exception. I know I do.
Quite frankly, what gets me is those who fail to show up at all. It is your right to listen to people who are going to potentially control your government. Weigh their views against your own. And then go to the polls and make your decisions. It says something about this country in general when more people vote for a couple on Dancing with the Stars and singers on American Idol than show up at the polls twice a year.
Isn’t time we take responisibility for our constitutional right to elect our government officials? Quite frankly, who cares who wins American Idol or Dancing with the Stars.
As an SUV driving, married, with-out children Republican, rest assured that when I voted, I voted for the people that best represented my views. I split my vote between Democrats and Republicans. I also know how to review the summary screen, ask for help if something is wrong, and not to touch the “Cast Ballot” button until someone helps me! Quit placing blame where it doesn’t belong… on the rain, on the machines, and on the people you are calling ugly names.

I think its funny that we didn’t have a republican governor since the civil war error until Sonny and Cagle has been elected as the first lt. governor ever and somehow Georgia’s problems are all the republican’s fault. Maybe by electing republican’s to office Georgia is saying that they want change. Change from you whining liberals. You people make me laugh!

Dave,
Just a quick little history lesson for you. The Union Army got absolutly slaughtered in the Civil War. They lost 3 men to every conferderate troop. The Union won the war because they had more warm bodies to throw at a cause none of thier soldiers believed in. All the best generals in the Civil War were from the South. The North couldn’t bear to lose the companionship of the confederacy, not visa versa. The north was so anxious to rejoin the south that next president after Lincoln was an elected Southerner. Feel free to bash republicans or democrats as freely as you like, but please refrain from bashing the greatest region of America. You chose to move here. This is the South it will always be the South and we will always be proud, be we black, white, straight, gay, christian, jew, or agnostic.

Hey relax dave, Thanks for your little history lesson, but again, this is the USA and Georgia is a part of it. I (we) have the right to move about freely. I love it here. I love that I sold my home years ago for a large profit and live in a home that would cost me 5X as much if I stilled lived up north. My taxes were over $21,000 per year. For that much money per year I was hoping that the town I lived in would have someone come and plow my driveway and shovel the 2’ of snow I had to deal with. i like living here in the South, but I just can’t stand that so much of the political agenda is driven by religion. I can live anywhere in this great country of ours. I choose to live here. I deal with the backwards things like no buying beer on Sunday, but I can goto a bar, drink all i want then drive home! Makes a lot of sense! There are no sales of beer on Sunday because od religion. Yet where I live (in N. GA) there are still dry counties. I am friends with a good deal of peole that grew up here (in Dawsonville) that told me about pastors preaching on Sunday and then selling moonshine to the men after services. It’s just a very hypocritical state. it is also still very very racist up here. There is only a handful of African Americans here, and I see hispanics and African Americans getting pulled over on 400 at a ratio of about 5 to 1. Why is that? Love thy neighbor? Only if he looks like you and me. I think this christmas i’ll put up a big “star of david’ on my home (and I’m not jewish). I’ll probably have my home burned down (I’m not kidding). That’s how racist it still is up here.
