An effort to draft Borders back into the Atlanta mayoral race

An effort to draft Lisa Borders back into this year’s race for mayor of Atlanta has begun in earnest.

Borders, now president of the Atlanta City council, dropped out of the contest last summer to spend more time with her ailing parents. A host of candidates, including state Sen. Kasim Reed and city councilwoman Mary Norwood, have gotten a six-month jump on her in the meantime.

My AJC colleague Eric Stirgus, who haunts City Hall, has passed on an e-mail he received this afternoon from David Todd Jr., a business and civic leader who is a long-time friend of Borders:

“I am sure that by now you have heard rumors that Lisa Borders maybe stepping back into the race for mayor of Atlanta. I really think that she would be the very best for our city and I am urging her to her ‘dive back in’ now!!

“She has had thousands of requests from folks all over the city in many cases offering to help her fix what she needs to fix with getting her parents the proper care and then …..get back in to ‘fix this City.’ If you agree and are so inclined to do so: I would ask that you send her a note encouraging her consider this (somewhat of an informal petition).

“Her email is: lisa@bordersforatlanta.com.”

Borders has said in recent weeks, Stirgus said, that she hasn’t decided whether to reconsider. Which does indicate that she’s been thinking about it. We’re trying to get in touch with her now.

Sounds like a neatly orchestrated way to get back in the race to me. You quit on me once. Why would I sign up to support you so you can quit on me again?

You either run or don’t. In these difficult times, our City needs a decisive candidate, not one that tastes the water through political hacks and blogs.

Fine by me. Anyone is better than Mary Norwood.

“ABM,” What’s the “problem” with Mary Norwood. “Crimefighting” down in Grant Park - with a connected line of City Halls in step with the Bush Crime Family, et al, permitting Afghan heroin to turn our town into “The Wal-Mart for heroin retailing for the Southeast”; and that “royal court’s” pushing Kasim Reed with “Philadelphia money” - I had occasion to discuss the upcoming race with one who seemed honest and wise telling me from first-hand knowedge that Mary Norwood is a good person…and should be supported for Mayor.

“All” we need in government is well-motivated, good citizens who will restore common sense righteousness and be intolerant of sleaze and corruption…Grace will do the rest.

The entire City must come together - as a “Ward Republic” - in this new era in American politics. We must turn our back on the status quo as we pursue justice in the matter of the Bush/Cheney evil and the faction which brought them and ripped off our economy…as well as the regional and local “subsidiaries” willing to go along with Rome’s Fifth Column’s treason and usurpation.

Finally! Mary is crazy and Kasim smells like Bill Campbell. I REALLY hope Lisa gets back in.

Hey Y’all;

As a politician, I believe Lisa Bordesr is far too distant in relationships with the community. She is much more closer to developers and their concerns than with the general public of Atlanta. Therefore, I have a notion that if she was ever in the driver seat as mayor of Atlanta, her cold nature of not relating to the average citizen would be disasterous in the community being close with City Hall and their needs being met. Her relationshipp will be with Tom Cousins, whom she work for, and other developers who want business in the city. She and Kasim Reed are in the same boat. None have any community relationship with the city they want to use as their front.

we need someone who is pragmatic in their relationship with the community and developers. We do not need politicians who turn on their community charm when it is election time and then arrogantly dismisses them when they get in office. Shirley masterly displayed this behavior through through half her time in office. I believe to the detriment of the community. Hopefully, we can get a candidate who is better than all the above. I hate to see us settle for less.

Information transfer is key to political as well as economic advance. Would those of proven integrity who know Mary Norwood speak to her character? TIA

Mary Norwood is honest and can’t bought off. That’s why I’m voting for her. Borders had her chance…she’s proven she can’t solve crime (her home has been broken into 3 times in the last 2 years).

Wow… This is such an exciting time in Atlanta politics. Having met all of the candidates, I’m definitely putting my support behind State Senator Kasim Reed. He is focused, has a forward thinking vision, and has a strong desire to create an inclusive coalition that will make Atlanta a better place to live for EVERYONE, no matter race, faith, gender, socio-economic, or political persuasion.

I met Kasim Reed, and was very impressed. He came off energetic and visionary. Mary has not impressed me at all, and I agree with MG that if Lisa quit once she will quit again!!! Kasim is the best candidate in my opinion.
