WXIA political reporter Denis O’Hayer leaves for WABE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
This from the AJC’s radio/TV blog:
WXIA-TV political reporter Denis O’Hayer has been hired to replace John Lemley as local host of “All Things Considered” on 90.1/WABE-FM from 4 to 6:30. He will also do local spots for “The World” at 3 p.m. and “Marketplace” at 6:30 p.m.
He starts on air Feb. 2 though he’ll be at the station starting Tuesday January 20. Lemley now handles classical duties from noon to 3 p.m. but will continue to do some news-related duties. He used to do classical music before he did news.

YES! THIS IS AWESOME!
Not to be harsh, but Lemley shouldn’t have been on-air in the first place.
O’Hayer is going to rock it out. He was great for WGST back in the day. Hopefully Lemley and Reitzes will go dancing off into the sunset soon enough and Atlanta may have a station they can actually listen after 9 AM.

Denis O’Hayer is smart, classy and very professional. Great news for WABE, bad news for WXIA.

Denis Ohayer is one of the old time honest, accurate fair and balanced reporters who are all too rare in 21st century America - especially Atlanta.
Adios Denis, see you on the radio.

Actually, I am still on the air from Noon-3pm, doing great interviews, and putting together The Art of Song for WABE. With this news, of course, I will be off the air by the end of January. Just to clarify.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin criticized the Anchorage Daily News’ coverage of her family in an email posted on the paper’s website Monday night.
The email, sent by Palin last week, comes under the subject line “more ‘mistakes’?”
“Please, say it ain’t so: did you really allow a story to run in your paper today claiming Levi Johnston is a high school drop out? Did I read that right?” Palin asks at the beginning of the email. “And did you really print a story last week suggesting I had any connection with Sherry Johnston’s activities in the past six months or so and you won’t correct the story? Did I read that right?”
“And is your paper really still pursuing the sensational lie that I am not Trig’s mother?” she continues. “Is it true you have a reporter still bothering my state office, my very busy doctor (who’s already set the record straight for you), and the school district, in pursuit of your ridiculous conspiracy? And, oh, I could go on…”
Pat Dougherty, the editor of the Anchorage Daily News, defended his paper in a response posted on the paper’s site.
Dougherty told Palin the story about Levi Johnston came from the Associated Press, which bases the information on an interview the news organization had with the teenager during the campaign.
The editor also insisted that coverage of the arrest of Johnston’s mother on drug charges did not connect Palin to the charges and that the paper is still pursuing information about Trig’s birth with the intent of knocking down the frequently repeated rumor.
“Perhaps after reading this you will conclude that the facts are not exactly as you thought, or that there was more to these issues than you knew,” Dougherty wrote to Palin. “I hope you see that we have tried hard to practice sound journalism. We may have trusted the accuracy of the AP too much, but I won’t know that for sure until you confirm that Levi will graduate from high school.”

Denis is a class act, a fair guy and a good human. WXIA just let the best thing their news department had going for them walk out the door. I guess I will now have to become an “All Things Considered” fan. Congratulations Denis!

Good lord, what have I stumbled upon?! I’ve never read so many mean-spirited, cold comments about a guy that is truly an Atlanta radio treasure. What’s up with you people. After living in four different cities - Boston, Washington, New York and Seattle - I can honestly say that he’s the best. If you didn’t notice, a couple of weeks ago the AJC named him as THEIR pick for the best drive-time dj for 2008. I think that if John Lemley was nearly as bad as you paint him, he wouldn’t have even been considered, let alone picked for the honor. What really amazes me about blogs like this is that people say the most hurtful things without a single thought they the person they’re talking about is a live, living human being, with feelings just like yours. What would you think if you stumbled upon something like this written about YOU. I for one would be heartbroken. Think before you write people. Think!

C.R. - Thank heavens for a comment with reason! I, too, have lived in more than just this city - Boston and Philly - and John Lemley is the best host, news or classical, that I’ve ever heard. He’s up there with Robert Siegel and Steve Inskeep. Why he’s still in Atlanta and not in a larger market is baffling. I’m really looking forward to his new noonday program. Why hasn’t the AJC focused on that?

C.R. - Thank heavens for your voice of sanity and level-headed comments. I, too, have lived in more than just one city - Boston and Philly - and can honestly say that Lemley’s the best anywhere. Now, why haven’t we been able to read more about Lemley’s news noonday show?
