In ‘09 race for Atlanta mayor, Norwood tops Reed in overall fund-raising — but not in ready cash
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Surprise. It’s not state Sen. Kasim Reed who’s raised the most money for the 2009 race for mayor of Atlanta.
It’s Councilwoman Mary Norwood, who’s reporting a total $510,237 raised last year.
But Reed has the most cash on hand, with $328,129. Norwood reports $275,172.
Reed’s list of contributors, posted Saturday, can be found here. Norwood’s are here and here.
Norwood required two PDFs, because she lists everyone. There were 584 who gave $250 or less, 400 who gave $100 or less, 239 gave $50 or less, and 32 donations of $5.
Norwood appears ready to make campaign contributions an issue in the race, describing herself as “someone not playing the old city hall fund-raising game.”

Clearly, Norwood is a serious and viable candidate. Anyone who can raise more than half a million dollars for an off year election in a down-turned economy has their ducks in a row. It doesn’t matter that Reed has more cash on hand, Norwood has more money in the pipeline.

I doubt very seriously that Norwood has more money in the pipeline. And Reed raised his money in far less time than Norwood when you consider he only spent 41 days of the first reporting period bringing in contributors. But at the end of the day, this won’t be about money. Norwood is viable, but not serious. Anybody who honestly believes she can beat somebody like Reed in a head to head challenge in this city ought to have his head examined or at least go look at a map.

Yep, Kasim has it in the bag, because he’ll tap into the network of behind closed doors insiders. Look at those who gave him money: a whole lot of big contractors and companies with their hands out.
Is Kasim Reed willing and/or capable to change the culture of waste, bloat, poor customer service, nepotism, cronyism, patronage and incompetence that is Atlanta City Hall?

What a poor candidate! A city councilwoman who has been very ineffective in her 8 year run on city council and has spent the last four years running for mayor. Shame on her for using the death of a waiter to try to score very cheap political points. (I am tired of her crappy mailers too) I wish the people in Grant Park cared for all the black youths slain over the years as much as one of our own. I am white and tired of my neighbors in Grant Park caring for our community with little regard for surrounding communities. We have several elected officials in my community none black and we act like they can do know wrong. I love and care for all of gods children that are killed. Lets rally for every child who is murdered! I hope we clean out city hall this year and elected people who truly care for all people not just cliques.
