Rare Republican praise for Obama. In Georgia.

Something you don’t hear very often: a Republican leader in the state Senate gave some rare props to Democratic President-elect Barack Obama this morning.

At a legislative orientation session in Athens, Senate Transportation Chairman Jeff Mullis (R-Chickamauga) praised Obama for his announcement that he wants to invest in the nation’s infrastructure. According to my AJC colleague James Salzer, Mullis compared Obama’s plans to President Eisenhower’s investment in the interstate system during the 1950s.

“I am proud to see someone step up to the plate,” Mullis told lawmakers and lobbyists attending the session. Mullis was a front-and-center supporter of Republican nominee John McCain during the recent hostilities.

Hey Jim, are you going to cover the IL Gov’s attempt to sell Obama’s senate seat to the highest bidder. I know it will look bad for the Democrat party, but there must be some way you can blame it on Bush, Rove or the Republicans.

I don’t get it. I was sure this Patrick Fitzgerald was just another Democratic partisan who had it in for Bush. Now he’s after a Democrat?!?!

This can’t be right.

It is Bush’s fault that the IL gov. had to try to sell the Senate seat. There was no corruption in Chicago politics until Bush. It is Bush’s fault that this will reflect badly on the national Democrat party. It is Bush’s fault that all this attention on corruption for Senate seat will make it harder to Franken to “find” more votes in MN. I hate Bush.

Hey wacko, you might want to get started changing your routine to “I hate Obama.”

Which is, at least, a more honest description of your craziness.

It is Bush’s fault that I am crazy. If I were to ever hate Mr. Obama, it would be Bush’s fault. It is Bush’s fault that a bank in Chicago has been asked to provide information to a Grand Jury that is looking into the Obama/Rezko real estate deal, where Rezko bought the lot next door to the Obama’s and then sold it to Obama below market value, while Mr. Obama was lobbying for cash on belhalf of Rezko. It is Bush’s fault that this is fishy. It is Bush’s fault that the main stream media did not cover this during the election. I hate Bush!

Getting back to the topic, I’m glad to see a Republican state senator accepting pres.-elect Obama’s invitation to bipartisanship (or post-partisanship, or whatever we’re calling it). There is overwhelming evidence that this nation has underinvested in infrastructure in recent years, and that metro Atlanta is a prime example.

Now we need Gov. Perdue to “step up to the plate” as well.

Hey, you know what else is Bush’s fault? It is Bush’s fault that Charlie Rangel (D-NY) is kneed deep into an investigation of his tax records and political contributions. It is Bush’s fault that Mrs. America, aka Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), pushed to have Rangel head the Ways and Means committee (Tax Committee) and for her refusal to ask Rangel to step down while being investigated for Tax Fraud. That Bush is crafty. That Bush is evil. I hate Bush.

Typical republican. Big wasteful government is fine so long as THEY are able to spend the money and give to their friends. Makework jobs programs are what prolonged the last depression. Yes, our roads need help, but only because our legislature wastes money on useless crap instead of puting the money where it should go. Combine that with the fact that next to garbage collection and the space program, highway construction and maintenance is about the most wasteful and corrupt business in america - and that includes the folks that work for the county.

Aside from Ron Paul, is there any republican in office that understands that government spending diverts capital away from productive uses and funnels it down a rathole?

Wake up folks, the democrats are now in office. Its ok to stand up against government waste again. You don’t have to just bend down and kiss the feet of your elected fellow republican leader and do his bidding. Show some spine for a change and stand up for what’s right.

The private sector needs the money. If that means the only way to get the roads fixed is to privatize them, then so be it. There are plenty of models for this and they all produce better safer roads that the government can.
