It’s good to get these things out in the open. Now, group hug, everyone.

Now that Saxby Chambliss has won another six years, some Republicans are relaxing — and a few are forgiving.

Joe McCutchen of Elijay, who has a local cable TV show, was a big GOP voice behind the campaign of Libertarian Allen Buckley — which forced Tuesday’s Senate runoff.

But he endorsed Chambliss once his man was out.

McCutchen just left a message to say that Chambliss rang him up this afternoon, to personally thank him for the help — apparently not mentioning the unpleasantness of the first round.

On the other hand, on redstate.com, Erick Erickson was less willing to let bygones be bygones. He noted that Chambliss said this morning that the GOP needs to return to its Reagan roots.

“You start first,” Erickson writes. Here’s the gist of the rest:

The immigration compromise hurt you with the base. The farm bill hurt you with the business community. The energy compromise hurt you with the part of the base not hurt by the immigration compromise. Then the bailout vote set you on fire and nobody could bother even [urinating] on you after that.

You’ve gotten squishy on financial issues. You’ve gotten squishy on business issues. You’ve gotten comfortable in the establishment and the base does not see you as dependable anymore.

In short Saxby, you [ticked] off everybody. And people did not come out to vote for you. They came out to stop a filibuster proof Democrat Senate.

We all like you Saxby. Hell, I’ve busted my butt for years to get you elected, starting in 1994. And despite hundreds, if not thousands, of man hours working for you (including subjecting myself to Jim Marshall’s “Advising Small Businesses” class just to see if he’d say something stupid in 1998) and constantly fixing that miserable computer system in the old campaign office, I am sorely disappointed in how you’ve conducted yourself in the past few years.

I am even more sorely disappointed that your campaign was a disaster of monumental incompetence and a high level of being disconnected and out of touch with the grassroots on whom you depend for votes and volunteers.

From a former Closet Conservative, THANK YOU GEORGIA!

There are 16 Congressional Democrats up for re-election in 2010. America, take back your country and fight the tri-fecta of un-challenged power (Obama, Pelosi and Reid).

Thank you again from Connecticut … where Isn’t it ODD that we still have Chris Dodd?

To Erik, a (presumed) Republican but no fan of Chambliss … you’ll never find “the one” Republican who meets all your needs. But when it comes to a Republican vs. the alternative, we must ALWAYS hold our nose and vote Republican. 58 Million of us did that on election day, but 10 million more decided to stay home and pout. And look what we lost. That cost is higher than I’m willing to pay by sitting on my principles.

Back to the GOP roots? You spending more than you make? White only need apply? Editing intelligence to fit your money buddies? Draft dodging? Think about how bad the Republicans are off. We elected a black man with a Muslim name despite the fact many Americans had reservations. Now that Obama is showing he is governing from the center. The market is edging up because people have confidence in his economic team selections. The black fear factor the GOP uses is not proving true. The GOP is left with a shrinking base of white only supporters who think George Bush was the greatest president in American history. They slander anyone who disagrees, or doesn’t look, like them. GOP control of Georgia leaves us at the bottom in education and tops in teenage pregnancy. We have a huge state deficit even after being in the fastest growing region in the world’s largest economy. Only a Republican led state could pull that off.

Saxby Chamblis didnt’ win the election on principle, he won it with two things: First, the ultimate sleaze king did it by character assassination accusing Mr. Martin of being in essence a child molester and just every crime in the book. Chambliss could make the Virgin Mary look like a slut to the people in two weeks. His campaign would make ole’ Joe Goebbels proud.

Secondly, he won by appealing to good ole conservative paranoia. What a gold mine for votes that is! Stop those old demon Democrats from getting 60 votes! Guess what, without a Republican president in the White House, there’ll always be one or two Republicans who’ll bolt. Actually, failing to get the 60 votes is a godsend because it will allow the Dems to point the finger at the Republicans as obstructors of the change the country voted for. Wait for those 2010 elections and see the Republican carnage.

Return to Reagan principles? Chamblis isn’t about principles, he’s about winning and Georgia will be embarrassed for six more years. Mr. Reagan will be put back in the Republican hope chest until the next campaign.

Georgia’s conservative voters have moved to the fringes of American politics. The South is no longer that important to winning national elections. Until Georgia’s conservative voters see some common sense and become more centrist, they’ll be out in the cold. Get out those sweaters, it’s cold out there.

It is Bush’s fault that Martin is a pervert and hates kids. It is Bush’s fault that Saxby won because Bush made Georgia racist. It is Bush’s fault that it is cold outside, I know because before Bush, ALGORE, said that the Globe was warming. It is Bush’s fault that he did not listen to ALGORE and made it cold. It is Bush’s fault that I am freezing my arse off. I hate Bush.

Former closet conservative or former closet sociopath Caroline?

Are you one of the 30% that supports the Party no matter what, or the 15% that is Republican but thinks that Bush sucked?

Because the 30% are sociopaths.

And no, Wackoliberalhack, it isn’t Bush’s fault that Republicans are jerks. It’s Republican’s fault that they’re jerks.

It’s your fault that you’re a jerk, and given how you love Bush so much, you clearly want to kiss his….ring.

Houckster: Saxby won because the Obamamaniacs deemed it unimportant to show up for the run-off vote. Their man won, that’s all they wanted. A deep political understanding of the importance of this race to the Dems eluded them. Not very informed would you say?

Iva Fan: With the Dems in power, who will you blame now? Your biased emotions are no basis for cogent political thought. I’m sure your response will be filled with more slander and insults. Nice try to opine with your two cents. Try adult reasoning, maybe people will actually listen to what you have to say. Just a suggestion.

Democrats don’t believe in magic or rewriting history at their convenience.

Republicans have done enough damage that Democrats can blame them for 50 years.

Worked for Republicans and FDR.

And my response is full of slander and insults. Some things are worth slandering and insulting.

Adult reasoning…ok, if you support Bush, you are not worth my time to talk to….how is that for Adult reasoning? Reason requires a common frame reference of reality and a willingness to respect your opponent.

Rovian Republicans are not capable of doing that. And I don’t care if Republicans ‘listen’ or not because quite frankly, Rovian Republicans aren’t going to listen to anyone but fellow Party members.

I was a die hard Republican, but Bush was so horrible a President that Charlie Brown couldn’t have been worse, and I suspect Al Gore would have been lots better.

I voted for Saxby because he was the lesser of two evils which still make him evil. This country hasn’t had a true statesman for President in my lifetime, and given the way we restrict ballot access to only Democrats and Republicans it isn’t likely there will ever be another one. I truly fear Obama, but as I said earlier is it even possible he will be worse than Bush Jr. I think, I hope and I pray not.

Despite the extreme turnoff of all the incredibly nasty, negative ads that Saxby’s campaign ran, I held my nose and voted for himMy vote was purely and simply to prevent cloture if the Democratic majority gets too carried away. My vote was not a vote for Saxby, whose campaigns have been reprehensible and whose service has been a matter of toadying up to corporate interests. It was a vote for checks and balances, and to guard against such excesses as approval of late term abortion, gay marriage, etc..

How can Saxby walk around bragging about his win (not victory) with his chest stuck out when he needed all the muscle the GOP could muster. If he did such a great job, he would have won without a run off. How much did this win cost? Is it worth it when some of those in his party (the smart ones) reach across the isle? “Watch my smoke”and wipe that grin off your face! It’s not over.

“smaller government, fiscal responsibility, more individual rights and lower taxes.” And this is Saxby’s mantra….what a real stinking joke. Saxby rubberstamped W’s leading us to the biggest federal government in our history. Saxby stood behind such great legislation like the Patriot Act where civil liberties and privacy issues were thrown right out with the baby’s bath water. And finally, did we see our taxes truly lowered during his six years or even slightly adjusted? NO, NO, NO…..

Erickson is right on in saying that Saxby ran on character assassination of Jim Martin and the 60 seat majority scare tactic as well as ‘lowering your taxes.’ He never once mentioned his voting record which led us to this mess we are in right now. He should look at Isakson for help in how to be Senator that work with both sides of the aisle for common ground.

My home state, you were foolish for making this choice for another six years. Make your money now Saxby before you retire. Easily our worst Senator in state history….Russell and Coverdale now hold their heads in shame.

It is Bush’s fault that the liberals are whiny sore losing babies. It is BUsh’s fault that Aaron Burr V. Mexico sounds like everyone’s first and second wives. It is Bush fault that Saxby stole the election. It is Bush’s fault that Rovian stuff happens to the democrats and no one can stop it. It is Bush’s fault that Martin was soft on crime. It is Bush’s fault that Obama will not have a super majority to push through his programs. It will be Bush’s fault that some racist will run against Obama in 2012. If this country is not racist anymore then we should always have a liberal or minority President. If we have another GOP victory ever it will be because Bush will steal that election too. I hate Bush!!!!

You’re an idiot Libhack. Go back to your Hannity re-runs. Saxby is a horrible Senator who won only because Buckley ran on the ticket. His 3.4% would’ve won the election for Martin on the actual election day. Sad day for the state when the majority wants something other than this redneck but still doesn’t get it. Politics as usual.

I all ways loved Georgia. It might be two sandwiches shy of a picnic, but it was a nice place to live. Well yall showed them Democrats. The representation that you have elected will have very little influence. About the time your representatives turn on their parties and switch aka Sonny, the tide will have shifted leaving you behind again. Go figure

Saxby is now a big cheese because he won by double digits? What part of the math education did he miss, except maybe all of it. Unless he got 100% of the vote or less than 10%, he had to win by double digits. Does the man, in his arrogance, think we are all idiots?

Oh yeah, I forgot. Only Republicans think they have any intelligence.

Well, GA showed us again how little they really think.

Saxby says his reelection should be “a model” for the GOP’s comeback. Good grief! If his campaign is a model, then the future is a bleak one of hyperpartisan, sleazy, mudslinging character assassination. Saxby won because the Democrats put up a weak candidate as a sacrificial lamb just to prevent having as their standard bearer Vernon Jones, a megalogmaniac whose chief qualification was that he slipped out a rape prosecution by claiming that it was a consensual threesome and intimidating the victim into dropping the charges. When even a candidate as weak as Martin squeezed into a runoff due to the relative unpopularity of Saxby and the GOP, low turnout and millions of dollars of outside money for the sleaziest negative ads we have ever seen in Georgia held the seat for Saxy.

If this is the model for the Republican party in the future, God help us all.

I pray that the Republican party that I have supported in the past would find its way back with a fresher, more positive, more pragmatic, intellectual, centrist approach. See http://stevenlee.info/newrepublican/

Who can deny that everything Erickson wrote is true?

The Republican party is a giant unprincipled joke. If it weren’t for the likes of Ron Paul, it would have no substance at all.

For 8 years we have watched as conservative principles have fallen one by one courtesy of the war criminal that still infests the oval office. Rather than stand up for conservative values and REPRESENT THEIR CONSTITUENTS (AND THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL OATHS) republican congressman and senators both chose to support the party (as if the president was the party). Since when did we become a dictatorship. The constitution I read says that there is a separation of powers.

Constantly Ron Paul was ridiculed for his stands in favor of sound money, a non-interventionist foreign oolicy (no nation building), low taxes, a balanced budget, etc. and yet the republican platform has all those planks. If not the national, look around at the 50 state party platforms and you will have a responsible free market, personal liberty, small government ideal that the party is supposed to be upholding.

Thank goodness the party lost as many elections as they did. Being in the majority seems only to bring out the worst in the republican party. They are obsessed with power and will abandone all principles if the president says to. Unfortunately the primary process seems to only produce the worst kind of republicans for the presidency. Look at the field in this race. You had a true conservative in Ron Paul, some very strong “so called conservatives” in a few other contenders, and then the front runners who consisted of liberals and conservative wannabees. They talked the talk of conservatism (along with advocating a destructive american empire abroad) and never really stood firmly committed to anything even remotely conservative.

The shame of Saxby’s success is that it may very well serve as a model to the dying republican party. Once again the fear tactics that have been used as an excuse for our national embrace of fascism since 9-11 will once again be the model for trying to enliven the base.

The only positive thing that will likely come out of these elections is that the elected republicans are finally going to adopt a conservative line against the socialist onslaught of the Obama administration.

The only time you can count on a republican to stick to conservative principles is to put him in the minority. You can never count on a democrat to stick to any worthwhile principles, since even when they are in the majority, they are so afraid of doing anything right that will upset anyone that they do nothing - fearing losing power more than standing up for what’s right. One need only look at the fact that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld et.al haven’t been impeached and that the war rages on to see that this is true. Hell, they didn’t even attempt to stop anything.

Face it, the two party system that pits one camp against another (except when they get together to screw the american people) is destroying our country. Neither produces good candidates with any principles because it is easier to point at the other side in fear rather than put forth yourself in praise.

We can always hope that a real conservative party comes from the ashes of the GOP. With Ron Paul’s help, maybe it can.

Chambliss and the other Republicans just absolutely crack me up. Chambliss says he ran on a Reagan platform of smaller government, blah-blah-blah, but his record for the past six years is anything but that. Only GA voters are dumb enough to sit back and let him spew those lies and believe it. The right-wingers are soooo worried about a socialist agenda by Obama, when we have seen the Repbulicans lead us into a far more socialist state than any Democrat has in my lifetime. Again, you right-wingers are just showing your ignorance in thinking Republicans are better at governing than the Democrats. After four years of Obama, the country will see what an intelligent and thoughtful leader can do for our country. We just haven’t had one of those in the past eight years.

Joe McCutchen was on the Al Ganey show on WDUN when Isakson was running against Herman Cain. I remember him talking about how Johnny was the conservative for the job, etc. Isakson is cut from the same cloth as Saxby. I wonder if Joe will support a libertarian against Johnny? We missed a chance to CHANGE things when we failed to elect Herman Cain.
