On Thursday, Chambliss was 8,000 shy of 50% — this a.m. he’s 16,000 short

With all Fulton County precincts now having reported (at least on the web site of Secretary of State Karen Handel), Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss’ chances of escaping a U.S. Senate runoff seem to have gotten smaller.

On Thursday morning, Chambliss was 8,198 votes shy of the 50-percent-plus-one mark he needs. This morning, the number has nearly doubled to 16,086.

By percentage, the race stands at Chambliss, 49.8 percent; Democrat Jim Martin, 46.8 percent; and Libertarian Allen Buckley, 3.4 percent.

Read the latest vote-count article here.

Last night, a Democratic friend — with a fine hand for note-taking — was phoned by an Ogden, Utah firm apparently polling for Chambliss.

The pollster asked how the respondent voted on Tuesday, of course, and asked him to rate issues. The pollster asked what he thought of a national sales tax. (The Fair Tax in local parlance).

There were abortion and gun control questions. Another that asked if the rich were taxed enough. And whether Democratic control of Washington was a good thing or a bad thing.

Most interesting was the hot-button list of items that might erupt in a short campaign:

— Criminal rights activists (Democrat Jim Martin, Chambliss’ runoff rival, is an attorney);

— Politicians acting on self-interest;

— China cheating on trade deals;

— Courts allowing same-sex marriage;

— The “lack of oil exploration” driving up gas costs;

— The $700 billion bailout of Wall Street;

— Pork barrel projects;

— The state of health care;

— And bringing troops home now.

Sissy Saxby will be running an all negative campaign, because he can’t talk about his own record - the Wall Street Bailout, Immigration Amnesty and pork barrell favors for his lobbyist cronies.

Resign now, Karen Handel, effective noon tomorrow, for your role in the long lines at polls that housed only three voting machines. you did it. It’s your fault, a result of your philosophy of voting fraud to protect the evangelical right. Shame on you, Karen Handel, you criminal POS.

Just resign. Just go away. You make us sick.

Now, that said, I wouldn’t mind asking you if you have an older sister for me. I love evil in a woman. I just do. Surely your older sister is infected with it, evil, if you have one.

Typical GOP, avoiding real issues by demonizing the opponent on “values” issues. What about the values and morals of a candidate that would rather run a nasty campaign than focus on the real issues facing the middle class.

Seriously, this country has had enough of the typical Republican “opponent branding” nastiness. Just look at North Carolina, where Hagan soundly defeated Dole after Dole showed her GOP values and went nasty.

If any high-level Dems are reading this, just do this: Run an ad showing how Saxby treated Cleland in 2002, and parallel it to his current campaign of lies.

Meow. Negative Ads…good glory Miss Molly!! Who started throwing the BS? MARTIN - and the Democratic National Committee with the lies about the Fair Tax. I guess it is OKAY for the dems to throw poop but Republicans can’t respond. Ah, yes, I forgot….As for Cleland — he had the tools to win, but people were SICK of his game playing. Chambliss didn’t want to vote for the bailout, BUT the HOUSE AND SENATE DEMOCRATIC leadership was on the stations belly-aching that they “did their part” and got their “people” lined up to vote for it…it was the Republicans who couldn’t get their people to vote for it. A situation CAUSED BY BARNEY FRANK — and his “friend” who got millions of dollars in a golden parachute. So, shut UP!!

Keep GA Tax Dollars in GA!!! If you re-elect Chambliss you’ll just get someone in the minority party who is sidelined. He won’t have any plum committee assignments and he won’t be able to redirect federal tax dollars to GA. Republicans will say that he can be a check on the Dems power, but they have 57 seats, and plenty of moderate Republicans will join them. Chambliss will be useless, and our tax dollars will be directed to other states with Democratic Senators. Elect Jim Martin and you’ll get someone with the power to help our state get its fair share. You may not like how that works, but that is the reality. Time to do what is best for the state.

Mr. Becker - is your first name Moron or is that how you describe yourself to others?

If you think you could do a better job, next time the Secretary of State is up for election, pay your fees, get some fools to give you campaign money and run.

And, you sound much more “evil” than the Secretary of State. Do you work for Fulton County election board and were you one of the ones who screwed up the ballot counting?

At this point, I certainly don’t think the Martin folks could be critical, without being hypocritical, of Saxby going negative.

Saxby ran a 100% positive campaign, until a couple of weeks before the election, when Martin’s relentless negative ads required a response.

I don’t think the Dems want to run the actual ad Chambliss did against Cleland, because the myth and the fantasy of the “morphing / unpatriotic” ad has grown so far beyond reality, that if anyone were to see it today they would think it was rather tame.

Just for historical perspective, Cleland was sucking up to the national Democrats and trying to unionize the Homeland Security department.

Here is the actual ad, view with caution as myths and fantasies will be shattered.

I am usually a Republican Voter. When I got to Chambliss I hit Libertarian. Guess what? Most of my friends did the same thing. Why? Because he is a RHINO. Republican In Name Only. He is a perfect example of being an Elected Spender who does nothing but keep getting himself reelected. I emailed him about 15 times in the past two or three years. All issues important to me and my family. All we get back are the roboemails. He could care less. Now I am faced with a run off. Martin or Chambliss. Martin’s ads about raising the cost of stuff 23% make him either beyond stupid or just a liar.
I guess I will vote for Chambliss but I will not be happy about it. My hope is that somebody tells him about this comment. I would email it to him but I already know he doesn’t read anything but polls.

The greatest threat to American democracy is voter fraud. We’re getting close to a tipping point where people do not believe our electoral system accurately gauges the will of the people. Any effort to dissuade fraud is not only appropriate but vital to our country’s well being.

Voting shouldn’t necessarily be easy. If an election matters to you then you’ll make a point to vote.

Early voting invited fraud on a level we’ve never seen before - if you don’t think a significant number of people were voting twice then you must be incredibly naive, stupid, or dishonest.

We had a chance to elect a real conservative back in the 2002 GOP Primary. But too many people listened to the White House and settled on their rubber stamp. Instead of getting a true conservative with a proven track record, we were handed this Southern Democrat in Republican’s clothing. Here is the key. GA needs a true conservative in the Senate - how can we get that? It would be much easier to have Martin in and then defeat HIM rather than just turn the other cheek and get Saxby back and then try to remove him. Saxby thinks if he can ride the Fair Tax that Boortz and the supporters will come save him. Sorry Saxby, but you need to be broadly conservative to prove yourself. Grabbing the nearest issue and claiming you are conservative while your overall record shows otherwise doesn’t cut it. I’d rather get out the ones who caused the GOP to whither and THEN put true conservatives in the Senate. Why send back the squishy types who have given us our current demise?

The biggest threat is voter fraud? Really? IN PERSON VOTER FRAUD? that is a fairy tale. In person voter fraud is minuscule, and absentee ballot fraud is not a huge issue, esp given how easy it is to have an absentee ballot not count. The biggest threat to our democracy is VOTER SUPPRESSION. If you can’t win in a case where a majority of the electorate votes, then you do not deserve to win. Period. Early voting allows more people to make time to vote, which in a world where taking even the two hours you are guaranteed by law to vote might result in getting fired, is a good thing.

And it will be a better thing if we are rid of Saxby.

I got the same call last night. One of the questions was how concerned I would be if the Democrats won the WH and controlled Congress. I told her that the question was moot - the Democrats had already done it! She also asked about the run-off between Chambliss and Martin. I asked her if she had watched the news - because, last night, Fulton County was still counting ballots! I was also asked about my vote for president. Geez louise - what don’t they understand about secret ballot? I stongly suspected they were polling/trolling for Chambliss - just by the phrasing of the questions.

Saxby’s fine. The only reason he didn’t thump that loser Martin is due to disgruntled conservatives upset over his support of the bailout—self included. My vote for Buckley is going back to Saxby for the runoff. We made our point. We’re not going to put one more homo-loving, income-stealing, baby-killing Democrat in Washington. There’s enough already, and one too many in the oval office.

THIS IS IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ. First, a little backgroupd - I vote by issue and by belief, not by Party. I have always leaned toward Christian Conservative…until now. You must realize that this financial crisis and these wars and the ruined American reputation is A RESULT OF THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT. IF YOU OR ANY OF US PERFORMED ON THE JOB LIKE THEY HAVE, WE WOULD BE FIRED. My 40ik is down 45%…I say fire them all - if they are an incumbent, get them out. WE CAN MAKE A STATEMENT HERE - we can fire Saxby by not voting for him in the runoff, and tell the world that we are doing that because he failed us. ALL of them failed us, but it’s too late - other incumbents have dodged this bullet; and, we can only affect our local US representative - we can’t vote someone in Utah out. Make no mistake - the power in this country is in the hands of it’s people - not in the hands of one person who is supposed to represent us. He/they did not do their job, let’s give someone else a chance - how much worse can they do?

The Fair Tax? Are you kidding me? We are in the middle of a recession, everyone is struggling and your great idea is to tack on 23% on top of every purchase? Some people can barely afford bills, gas, food and rent, how are they supposed to afford that plus 23%? Even if they can afford it, this economy is in need of more spending encouragements to kick start it, a 23% tax will only discourage spending!

I plan to give Saxby the same amount of attention in the run-off as I did to the election of John McCain—-ZERO! Though the majority of Georgia voted for McCain, they now have the chance to redeem themselves by voting for Jim Martin, and I believe they will. Jim is not the perfect candidate, but he is the lesser of two evils. I’ve never been a Republican, but from listening to too many of them, a good many are rotten to the core, and hide behind religion etc., and that is not acceptable to me. The 23% tax is to REPLACE the IRS. Thus, you get your ENTIRE paycheck. The 23% goes towards taxes, FICA and Medicare. The Democrats don’t say this because that would mean they woudl have to tell you the Truth. Depends on what your definition of TRUTH is.

And delays are not state conspiracies either. Go talk to Fulton if you are unhappy, but don’t spew fallacious accusations. My suggestion: get familiar with Google searches before you start making steep accusations like conspiracy to commit voter fraud— it’s a useful tool!

I only voted for Saxby to deny the Dems a 60 seat majority in the sneate. Unless they manage to steal the election in MN and put Franken in they won’t get it, and without that shield Saxby can kiss my vote goodbye.

I find it funny that some liberals are slamming Saxby over voting for the bailout while at this very moment the Democrat leadership is up on capitol hill trying to get even more billions of our taxpayer dollars to fund bailouts of everything from failed state economies, also in mostly Democrat held states, to the auto industry. So a Republican voting for a bailout is bad, but Dems trying to craft even more bailouts is good.

Here are my 3 strikes against Saxby 1. Co wrote and sponsored that abysmal amnesty bill 2. Co wrote and was part of the gang who put forth the Senate energy bill which basically boiled down to shut up, put on a sweater and forget drilling for our own resources 3. Voting for the bailout, but because I realized early on once that genie was out of the bottle it would only lead to more such legislation.

Yes Nikki, voter fraud is far more of a problem then voter suppression. People who want to vote will vote - end of discussion. The people who don’t care enough to make sure their vote is counted don’t deserve to have it counted. On the otherhand, those of us who do care are relatively powerless to stop people from voting two or three times.

It isn’t that hard to understand - people control their ability to vote and do not control the ability to prevent others from voting multiple times!

You don’t think this the norm? How big a fool are you? It was EASY to go with fraudulant ID and vote early “on someone else’s behalf” and then show up on election day and cast a vote yourself.

Martin will vote with the Democrats—he has already shown his willingness to spout the party lie that it was “Bush Economics” that caused the economic meltdown. Democratic presidents Carter and Clinton, along with the thugs at ACORN began a push (and in the case of ACORN, they began to harass and engage in thuggery) to get banks to make loans to people who couldn’t afford them. Democratic elected officials like Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank pushed policy that allowed Fannie Mae and Fannie Mac to buy up many of those unwise loans. President Bush actually warned of the danger.

Martin is either a willing liar or an unthinking tool of the Democratic party. Either way, I don’t want him representing me in Washington.

Because you didnt think clearly here … you who cant see the tidal wave of socialist cr*pola that is going to hit this once-fine and once-free nation at the hands of a Democrat majority Congress and left-liberal Obama President? - union check card - bailouts without end - assault on the 1st amendment - amnesty for illegals - tax hikes that will kill jobs - NO to offshore drilling

Congrats - The socialist Liberal Democrats will now steal your money, spending it on liberal special interests and sticking you with the bill. They will trample on our rights as Americans and toss the Constitution in the trash.

I understand the problem with lesser of two evils… but now we are saddled with the GREATEST of evils with Pelosi, Reid and Obama - and a huge and unprecedented majority that will rip through and destroy the balance of power in Washington.

This is a sad sad time for American freedom and I hope you come back to the runoff and vote Saxby to stem the Democrat supermajority, which is very very dangerous. Martin will be a tax-hiking free-spending job-killing shill for Reid and his horrible leftwing special interests.

Save American freedom, Vote Saxby.

Yeah,in fact, the economy was doing pretty well again, until this latest glitch which originated in left-wing Democratic policies.

So, now we’re getting a “change,” and Obama’s going to raise taxes on corporations and eliminate the right to vote for unionization—people will be coerced into joining unions. Wow, THAT will really stop the lay-offs and business closings! Democrats are looking at a plan to TAX 401(K)s and coerce, or rather force everyone into a government plan that will pay a minimum of interest. Forget freedom of choice. Not that you’ll know any better, because they also hope to legislate away any any conservative voice in the media.

It amazes me that the same people who have screamed about losing their civil liberties under the Bush Administration( and I challenge you to name one you have lost under Bush,)have voted for a party that will most definitely work to take freedom away from all of us. Obama even voted against a bill in the Senate that guaranteed the right to life of children born alive after attempted abortion. In essence, he voted FOR infanticide.

I think the right to life is a pretty basic one. Unlike the right to kill unborn human beings, the right to a guaranteed income, or the right to change the definition and essence of marriage and marry a person of the same sex, the right to life is actually guaranteed in the Constitution.

Way to go Geoergia. Go ahead and send Sleazby Chambliss back to the Senate. After that why don’t you folks make Deliverance II, or maybe that’s what you’re doing. After the Cleland race, I’m dismayed that Chambliss is walking the streets much less running for office. Chambliss is a disgrace and an affront to anyone that ever served our country in uniform.

Martin is a liar, and not a man of integrity. His commercials have been the more negative and dishonest of the two. Telling people that Saxby wants to increase taxes by 23% is an out and out lie. He is a supporter of the Fair Tax, which in my opinion shouldn’t be called the Fair Tax because the word Fair scares democrats. The only reason Martin received so many votes is because he rode on the coat tails of Obama, another candidate where people don’t understand his basic philosphy. It is ridiculous!

    …and to think they let all you fools, idiots and morons vote…

    Jim Martin has lied and intentionally misdirected potential voters in THIS campaign - how can you possibly believe that he will do what he says he will do when he has already proven that he will say anything to get into power?

    Of course, all of the venom and hatred spewing froth form the party that pretends it is for tolerance and inclusiveness proves that it’s not just Jim Martin who is lacking in the raw ethical fiber we should demand of our public servants.

    Just ask Joe Liebermann what the penalty for independent thought and following the courage of your own convictions is from the Party.

    As an independent, my concern with Saxby is simple. He has done little for Georgia and he lost my vote when he voted against the Medicare bill last year. His vote, due to “ideological” reasons meant that Grady would be cut millions of dollars just as everyone else in Georgia was trying to save it!

    His idealogical stance was that more money should have been given to the insurance companies. The issue was that some of the money for the bill was coming from redirecting an overpayment of 19-22 % to the insurance companies for Medicare Advantage programs (per Government Accounting Office) and he wanted them to keep the money.

    So Georgians are fighting to save a huge health care resource for its citiizens. Saxby is protecting the insurance companies.

    How out of touch can you be? The is a big difference between being ideological and being effective.

    I’ll vote Martin.

    The last eight years God has been punishing the U.S. for stealing the 2000 election. Everything that has happened in the past eight years has led up to the most dangerous person being elected president. But could he do worse then the one that has been there for the last eight years? Probably not. And I don’t want to hear again of an Alaskan running for president,she was pitiful and dangerous.

    As a stunch Republican and an early supporter of Saxby, I have contnually been disappointed in his perormance and attitude towards the GA GOP base. His votes have been more in line with the Democrats. The trappings of office seem to be his main interest. Those things are great, but not what we sent him to Washington to focus on. The best thing he has going for him is his lovely wife. This run off could be a wake up call for him, but it is too late for me to vote for him again. Martin may be able to do more for GA in the way of dollars sent in our direction with the new Administration, but I just can’t go there. For the first time in memory, I’ll just sit this one out.

    SAXBY DOES NOT AND WILL NOT LISTEN TO THE MIDDLE CLASS. He votes for the big guys: insurance companies, industrial farms, Wall Street speculators. One time he got sent home with his tail between his legs when folks showed their ire with his proposal to legalize the illegal immigrants. Then, the big farmers complained that they could not get field workers, and he listened. Wall Street complained that they were too big to fail and he listened. SAXBY HAS DONE AND WILL DO NOTHING BUT ROB FROM THE MIDDLE CLASS TO SUPPORT THE WEALTHY.

    He has mailed out postcards with the most egregious lies on them. Simple fact checking will show the lies.

    He hid while others served in Vietnam. Kinda like “I had other, more important things to do” Cheney.

    He will continue to misrepresent the truth, and misrepresent the people of Georgia unless we send him home and tell him (and his son) to get a job.

    Here is a list of what Saxby has done that is good for the majority of Georgians:

    Folks, look at his record (which he avoids talking about) and get rid of him!

    Today, Saxby Chambliss emailed supporters with a promise to campaign for the status quo in Washington. Referring to the groundbreaking election of President-elect Barack Obama on a platform of change, Saxby responded, “We can’t let that happen. Our country will never be the same.”

    Unfortunately, more of the “same” means more of the Saxby Economics that cost Georgia 88,000 jobs this year alone, sent gas prices soaring to $4 a gallon this summer, and handed $700 billion to the Wall Street institutions responsible for the meltdown in the first place – without any protections for taxpayers. Under Saxby Economics, government spending has skyrocketed, the deficit is approaching $1 trillion, and yet Saxby continues to support billions of dollars in tax breaks for oil companies, special interests, and companies that ship Georgia’s jobs overseas.

    “There’s a clear difference between Jim Martin and Saxby Chambliss,” said Martin for Senate campaign spokesperson Kate Hansen. “Jim Martin believes that when the economy no longer works for middle class Georgians, it’s time for a change, but Saxby Chambliss claims he won’t let that happen. We need a new Senator.”

    Saxby Chambliss Can’t Let Change Happen:

    While Hardworking Middle Class Georgians Need Relief…

    Georgia Has Lost 88,000 Jobs This Year, and Had Some of the Highest Rates of Unemployment, Personal Bankruptcies and Foreclosures in the Country. Georgia has the second highest unemployment rate in the country, has lost 88,000 jobs since January, and leads the nation in home foreclosures. [BLS Unemployment Statistics; AP, 1/30/08; Atlanta Business Chronicle, 3/13/08]

    Georgia Has Lost 173,000 Manufacturing Jobs During the Bush- Chambliss Era. Since January 2001, Georgia has lost 172,900 manufacturing jobs. In January 2001, Georgia had 578,800 manufacturing jobs. In August 2008, Georgia had 405,900 jobs in that sector. [Bureau of Labor Statistics, 9/19/08; BLS, 3/1/01]

    …Saxby’s Response Makes His Priorities Clear:

    A $700 Bailout For Wall Street And CEOs. Chambliss voted for the $700 billion dollar Wall Street bailout package that banks are now using to continue paying executive bonuses and dividends to stockholders, and to acquire other banks. Chambliss has received $2,536,728 from the financial, real estate and insurance industry. [Vote Time Magazine, 10/27/08; GPB Debate, 11/2/08; Center for Responsive Politics, accessed 11/6/08]

    … And Continuing Tax Breaks for Companies that Ship Manufacturing Jobs Overseas. In 2004 and 2005, Chambliss voted twice in opposition to amendments that would repeal the deferral tax subsidy for companies that outsource production of goods for sale in the U.S. market. In 2005, Chambliss voted against a Dorgan (D-ND) amendment that would “repeal the tax subsidy for certain domestic companies which move manufacturing operations and American jobs offshore.” In 2004, Chambliss voted to table, effectively killing, an amendment that would “partially repeal a tax deferral regulation for U.S. multinational companies by requiring those companies to pay federal income taxes on foreign factories when goods are reimported back into the United States,” according to CQ.
