Gingrich: ‘This was failure of GOP Congress, president’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
One wonders if the race for chairman of the rudderless Republican National Committee has now begun.
This from this morning’s Washington Times:
“The first fact of the 2008 election is the failure of the Republican Congress and the Republican president,” said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. “John McCain ran 24-plus points ahead of President Bush’s job approval - an amazing achievement. This was a performance election not an ideological election.”
The same article included this:
“Republicans [once] owned the military and the war issue, but you have so many younger people military dependents from all over the country stationed or living here in western Kentucky,” said Kentucky-based Republican campaign strategist Tim Havrilek, a conservative evangelical Christian. “Patriotism and the flag don’t cut it anymore, not with body bags being hauled off in plain view every week, military dependents feeling the squeeze of the economy just like everyone else, our military people going back to Iraq and Afghanistan five and six times.
“I’ve never seen more military people out working to elect a Democrat for president,” he said.

John McCain lost the moment he won the nomination. He went about it the wrong way in 2000 and did it again in 2008. You don’t nominate a moderate liberal in the republican party.
Way to go, you Huckaidiots.
Fred, Mitt, or Rudy would’ve trashed BO. Huck and “The Mac” were both eventual losers.

Newt is correct. The last 8 years have shown Republican policies of the 21st century to be an utter and complete failure. From 8 years of stagnated wages and 2 wars to a record budget deficit and a complete loss of moral standing in the world, the United States has, under Republican leadership, turned one of the most dismally spectacular U-turns in the history of the modern world. This is not to let Democrats off the hook as their last 2 years of congressional leadership have proved quite disappointing. That being said, it is 100% undeniable that the Republicans have set the tone and provided the primary guidance for the greater part of this decade and they have done so much damage to our nation that it may take multiple generations to undo it.

I am a Vietnam veteran and that war looks like a just cause based on Iraq. Bush took down his party, the GOP that said yes to Iraq. I knew, as did any veteran of Vietnam, that this was a senseless war. Bush sent great American soldiers to die for NOTHING. The GOP gets what they deserved in spades. I voted for Obama. He has revitalized the nation. I am proud that he carried my white votes than the last two democratic nominees. This election is bringing back hope to many who had no hope. I stayed up till midnight to watch and enjoy. McCain is an honorable hero of this country and would have been a good president. But he had the Bush albatross around his neck.

Glenn, you couldn’t be more mistaken. Obama won by changing the game. He got more people involved in the election. If the republicans continue to narrow the tent and the people to whom the party appeals, they can expect losses in national elections outside the core south for some time. The country has changed.

Problem with Obama is that the terrorist are thrilled that he is President because the terroist can multiply by the millions and blow up, kill, nuke anybody because Obama went to the, SOC-NFB, (School Of Clinton No Fighting Back). Now terroist will invade Iraq and Saudi Arabia and gas will go up $10 - $20 a gallon. A year from now there will be at least one nuke fired at a country who is our ally and Obama will just sit there.

Yes! What the GOP needs now is Newt — because he is remembered so fondly for his legislative successes and his moral behavior. And Sarah Palin, because she appeals so well to suburban women, with her anti-Roe, anti-health care, anti-science, pro-guns agenda.
Please, you right-wing diehards, listen to your avatars: Rush, Sean, Laura! Make sure you run a hard right social conservative like Palin in 2012. Die on your feet instead of live on your knees!

When the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010 (or sooner) the GOP has no one to blame but themselves… and we can blame them. When they had control, they tripped over themselves to spend more and do nothing.
Bush seemed rudderless after his SS reform failed. So much could have been done and now they have to start over. Bring it on, Newt.

Gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins. So is pride. These are two areas the arrogant, know-it-all Republicans, who are trying to cram this new brand of Republican theocratic prosperity gospel down the throats of their fellow Americans, should closely and introspectively investigate. When you aim black and white simplistic answers at black and white-thinking lowest common denominator people who don’t respect others, their religious beliefs, and scholarship, you end up with the lowest common denominator. That’s where the Republican Party sits today. They are in deep trouble with fat, gluttonous, clse-minded, propaganda-spreading rich people and fat, ignorant, education-hating religious intolerants forming their ever-dwindling base.

It amazes me that most people do not understand Republican politics… This election should be a wake-up call for all conservatives. The base of the republican party is for smaller government, decreased spending, strong military, and strong family / morality. Over the past several years we have gotten away from that base and so in turn we have created this defeat.
Clearly John McCain was a weak candidate as were most of the candidates in the republican primary with the exception of Mike Huckabee.
But let not your heart be troubled because the conservative movement is still alive and we will come back much stronger than before. Only this time we will not turn our back on the principles that has made our party great!
In 2010 we will begin our defeat of Socialism

We Republicans got the wakeup call---hopefully. We nominated the wrong person for President. Give credit for service rendered, but not an electable candidate. Rebublicans must realize that the party has to distance itself from the left wing. As shown on the map of America, we have conservative, hard working, get what you earn America vs. big city, what can you give me America.Hopefully Republicans will spend the next 2 years finding a candidate who can get elected, then get behind that person and work harder than Mr. Obama did. We must do the same for Congressional and Senate seats. Give credit to Mr. Obama. He is a good speaker. Hopefully he will do more than make speeches for America.

Until the GOP unhitches itself from the social right, it’s never going to regain power. The GOP was hijacked by Bible-thumpers who will not be happy until we’re in a theocracy.
GWB played them like a fiddle in ‘00 and ‘04, with wedge issues like gay marriage and abortion. Did he do anything material on those issues? Nope. For their votes, we got eight years of his idiotic policies, wars, and deficits.
I think the blame must be shared between the GOP and these “single-issue voters”. They brought this on themselves.
I’m a fiscal conservative, but have had it with the GOP because of their relentless pandering to the religious right. Let these religious nutjobs form their own party. Give us back a party that believes in fiscal restraint and self-responsibility and leave the advancement of religion to church.

It amazes me that the GOP has gotten all the blame for the Wall Street Bailout. Seems to me, if I reach way back in my memory (like 6 weeks?), BOTH parties were panicking and saying this HAD to be done… RIGHT NOW! And don’t tell me that the GOP caused it, because there’s plenty of politics to go around there too.
This reminds me of ‘92, when the Dems blamed Bush 41 for raising taxes (and the resulting recession) when it was the Dems who wanted higher taxes and passed the bills through Congress. No accountability at all.

I’m seeing my white counterparts huddled in corners whispering to each other, bursting into laughter at whispered punch-lines and even received an email by mistake by another co-worker depicting Obama as a Sambo.
How disgraceful. I am so disappointed in my co-workers. How sad. This election is great and will go a long way to improve race relations in this country. I am amazed that even in victory, some on the Left are so terribly ungracious. Take a cue from your President-elect and show a little humility. As we say in sports, act like you’ve been there before.
Asd for President Obama, I believe he will find dealing with the Pelosi/Reid/Kos wing of the Democrat party to be more difficult than dealing with the GOP. Those people are going to want to pull him far down a leftward path, which will result in the failure of his administration.
For those of you Leftists who see this as a massive victory for Obama, note that 47% of the voters, even with a wildly unpopular president, an unpopular and too-long-drawn-out war, and massive economic issues not seen for 60 years, voted for the Republican.
Unless Obama is successful in significantly reducing our presence in Iraq, and turning the economy around, this is the high water mark of his popularity.

You think Obama had a fight for the nomination and presidency? Just wait until the various factions within the Democratic party start fighting for their priorities - tax changes, health care changes, infrastructure issues, social issues to name a few. Everyone is expecting Obama to address their concerns first and that can’t happen because many run at cross purposes (e.g., expand health care, improve the infrastructure and cut taxes???). Just ask Bill Clinton how difficult this issue was for him. Eventually he had to turn his back on the liberal wing of the party in order to govern effectively.

Politcians in general have failed us, we all want to blame the other party for what we seem to term as faults. We need to look deep inside ourselfs for example family values, as parents do we set standards for our chidren to follow or do we allow them to run around like hoodlums with baggy pants hanging down around there knees exposing there underwear, do we set examples for them. Do we get up and go to work every day and honestly earn our salries and try to better our selves or are we dead beats waiting on a free ticket? Do we follw GODS word, DO WE GO TO CHURCH AND WORSHIP GOD ? Do we thank God that we do live in the GREATEST COUNTRY on earth ? I think we all should re-evaluate who we are as individuals, make the appropriate changes and maybe the future will allow us to elect LEADERS WE CAN BE PROUD OF. Lets set term limits get rid of the dead wieght elect leaders who only agenda is to serve the community.

Newt needs to shut up! If he would have run then we might not be in this spot! Get off the sidelines & get in the game! Instead he’s enjoying his retirement & has become a media talking head. We need him Carl Rowe & other great conservative minds back in the game to try & unseat Obama in 2012!
The republicans need to take stock & regroup in order figure how to effectively get the message out! I think most people voted because there feed up with the way things are & they’ve been led to believe its due to the republicans when in fact it’s the policies put in place by the democrats that led us into this mess. So if we can get the message out while Obama & the dems stumble & fumble then we can make strides in 2010 then take back control in 2012! If we get than chance again then this time there should be no fooling around! We need to push our agenda through! Put in the Fair Tax, revamp Social Security, balance the budget & get rid of the deficit! To help with that reduce entitlements to able bodied people who are physically able to work! Create jobs by launching a massive national infrastructure improvement initiative. Doing all that will reduce the size of the government which is way to big: protect us & keep the infrastructure (all forms: roads, power & electronic networks etc) up to date. Send the illegal’s & any kids they’ve had here HOME (if they haven’t already left due to the economy or if Obama hasn’t granted them amnesty to guarantee another voter block to the dems), election reforms: no foreign money! Limits on ads & funds raised, standardization of the voting system: same hours & machines all over the country with the voter getting a copy of the ballot they cast, Picture ID required to vote then the number on the id is entered into a computer that goes to a state db then national db to guarantee only one ballot per voter is cast! Closer monitoring of polling places & poll workers!

Ellis - it isn’t that way everywhere - not even close. I was for the other guy, but I’m the only one in my office who was. So some people are huddling and laughing where you work - so what? If it bothers you, get another job.
Or, do what I do every day, smile with the security of your core beliefs and the courage of your convictions. Don’t give others any power over you. They laugh because they’ve been handed an embarrassing loss. Laugh with them for the same reason.
Don’t be a sore winner.

I’m a diehard conservative and I really like Newt but this election is Gingrich’s fault. He provided the leadership that the GOP needed as Speaker of the House. However, he was forced to step down after admitting to an affair and the GOP hasn’t been the same since.
I hope she was worth it, Newt.

Jay makes a good point:
note that 47% of the voters, even with a wildly unpopular president, an unpopular and too-long-drawn-out war, and massive economic issues not seen for 60 years, voted for the Republican.
Very true; our education system really IS in trouble if so many millions of Americans can’t learn from their mistakes.
Kinda makes me wonder exactly how much damage the Republicans would have to do for these poor fools to stop voting for ‘em….

For anyone who thinks it might be fun and smart to try to go after Bush & Cheney Co for war crimes - don’t go down that slippery slope.
The American people spoke yesterday and said they want change. That means a departure from normal Washington politics. Infighting and wasteful time and money spending will not be tolerated. Bush’s administration is not the first and won’t be the last to be controversial. Trying to go through their actions with a toothcomb will enrage the public that just wants to move on and heal our country, starting with the economy.
Is Barack Obama the man to do it? Only time will tell, but he first must get past a very bitter and partisan Democrat-run Congress. They may be nominally on his side, but they seem much more interested in trying to smear the GOP and Bush, while Obama has reiterated that he wants a new course and to solve problems. If Pelosi and Reid don’t shape up quick, drop this investigation nonsense, they may well face a repeat of 1994. Then again, I think Clinton’s best years were when he had to deal with Newt and the GOP. Spending went down and fiscal responsibility took over, and the budget was balanced.
Until Bush took office. Do you see a trend here? When a party has full control of the gov’t they really need to watch their backs because it is easy to get out of control. Good luck to Obama in this endeavor, he will need it!

Newt is a genius. I don’t fault B.O. for running and winning. I fault the uneducated masses who allowed the hoopla and emotionalism to run amuck and equate to votes. Nobody really took the time to evaluate what the new Prez is professing to do. God help us all. That being said, forget all the x’s and o’s of B.O.’s campaign. Just remember, you’re no better that the company you keep. (i.e. Wright, Ayers, Rashidi, etc.) That says it all. You bozos who voted for a man who hangs with those scary anti-american mongers deserve all you can get.

Both parties have made several mistakes in the past but we need to assist come together in order to improve our future fortunes.
The hate needs to stop go home and make sure you are setting the best example for everyone that you come in contact with!

Now lets see if Obama delivers on his promise for tax cuts for 95% of the people. Easy to say, but harder to do especially when Nancy Pelosi is running the House and the deficit is teetering on 1 trillion dollars. Obama made so many promises that he will not be able to deliver on that he will undoubtedly end up disappointing many of the independents and moderates who supported him. Speech making is his strong part, but the speaking part of his campaign is over. It’s the governing aspect that brings most people down.

What the Republicans need to do is rid themselves of the likes of Rush, Sean, Laura and all the rest of those mean-spirited know-nothings who poisoned so many wells in this country with their hate mongering. Do you want the Republian Party to be one that has credibility with the middle-class and Blacks and Latinos? Then start actually laying out an agenda of “positive” issues, and quit catering to the super-rich. You guys have yourselves to blame for alienating the political center with a bunch of Bible-thumping meanies who don’t want more goverment unless it’s to get into people’s bedrooms. With all the supposed talent in the Republican Party, the best y’all could come up with is a 72 year old “maverick” who, over the years, has zig-zagged on every Republican issue he’s been confronted with and who picked a complete ignoramous for a running mate. My God!! The woman couldn’t utter a coherent sentence. In fact, Obama needs to send her a thank you note for “galvanizing the Republican base” of gun-toting bigots. All she helped do was drive independent voters into Obama’s arms. Enough already with candidates who can’t decide if they’re liberal or conservative. And what about Rudy, Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee? LOSERS!!!! Rudy’s no paragon of conservative vision and Fred couldn’t decide when to announce his entry into the primaries. And Mitt presented the same kind of hypocricy that Rudy presented. When he was Governor of Massachusettes he was pro-choice, then in the primaries he was pro-life. These guys couldn’t walk and chew gum at the same time. The Republicans got “outclassed” by a Democratic candidate whose campaign organization beat every one of its opponents at every point in the process.
So, Republicans, y’all need to really examine who you are and what you believe in…and what issues you expect the Anmerican electorate to agree with. The days of using fear and lies are over. Re-watch the videos of your convention. It looked like the meeting of the Aryan Brotherhood. I didn’ts ee one Black face there.
Good Luck!!!

First of all Obama is a good campaigner but that said the GOP dropped the ball. Never go away from the base, the south and then try to come back into the base. Instead try to build from the base with policy. As someone who became a Reaganite in the mid to late 70’s it’s clear there are a few things that have gone wrong for quite awhile but that are not that hard to change/correct. The basic themes of the Reagan era need to be brought forward and updated slightly to include not only Taxes/Spending/Defense and social policy but reform. Conservative to moderate depending on each issue, but always to empower people, families and small business over Goverment and large corporations eventhough they may benefit many times. One reason GOP had a hard time prior to Reagan was they ignored issues effecting the majority of people. Healthcare cost and energy come to mind recently. Also one rule of politics is don’t motivate your opposition more than normal to intensify their vote against you. The GOP just needs to execute and they will be o.k. Gas prices, housing, immigration, credit cards, war and a down/sideways stock market hurt the GOP. The flip side is that many of the public have’nt experienced real liberalism since Jimmy Carter and Democratic controlled house and Senate. They are about to learn a lesson on why Reagan came on the scene in the first place. The big picture is two fold. One the economy is decentralizing across the world in terms of globilization and technology. That train has left the station and can’t be put into reverse. The liberals want to tailor Goverment policy and so do some in the GOP to more centralized Goverment. That puts these two trains in opposite directions and laws of physics will not allow that to work. The second, is all Mccain had to do was pick a Huckabee, Kasich, Perdue or someone like those and he would have possibly won Fl, NC, Va, Oh, Col, Nev….

McCain was just not a good spokesman for liberty. The prime example was, during one or even more of the debates when Hussein (we call one president Dubya so why not another Hussein!?) complained that McCain’s healthcare plan would destroy the system of employer-based medical insurance. McCain should have responded by saying: “You BET the idea is to dismantle this nonsensical so-called ‘system’ of getting health insurance through your employer! Do we get car insurance through our employer? Do we get our homeowners or renter’s insurance through our employer? Just think of being afraid to change jobs or being faced with job opportunities that are influenced by whether and what kind of insurance you have! Just think of being an employer and having the cost of your goods and services include your employees’ healthcare when your overseas competitors don’t have that burden. It’s way past time to put a stop to all that! Should our employers also buy us our food? Can you imagine how you’d eat - and WHAT you’d eat! - if that were the case? We NEED to dismantle this ridiculous ‘system’ of employer-provided health insurance. It’s the only way for people to get the kind of health insurance they need and can afford. It’s the only way to free everyone from having to worry about what happens to their health insurance if their employer changes or their employer decides to change their health insurance. And it’s the only way to remove the growing cost burden from employers who cannot compete in an international market against foreign companies whose employees are covered by socialist veterinary-medical-care schemes that most Americans would never accept and want to avoid!”

Oddly, I agree with you on that point, Timo. Obama’s healthcare plan is the least attractive part of his platform to me.
We DO need to dismantle the employer-based insurance system—and replace it with national healthcare, which is cheaper, more effective, and has a proven record of success in other industrialized nations.
Glad to have you on board!

Copyleft: Sometimes I think nationalized health care is the way to go - put the masses into a veterinary care system and then only let them have medically necessary care and not whatever they want like 3-D ultrasounds every month of their babies etc. AS LONG AS I CAN STILL BUY MEDICAL CARE THAT I NEED. Canada’s system works pretty well, after all, because it has the USA to the south where people can come for medical care they can’t get - or can’t get timely enough - in their own country.

Copyleft: yeah, let’s abolish money. It is such an embarrassment. Tell you what, I’ll take all of yours off your hands.
BUT, hey, it turns out you don’t actually need money to get medical care in the USA after all! Go into any ER in the country and they will give you free MRI’s and CT scans and stuff for free. Oh, yeah, they’ll try to charge you later, so just give ‘em a fake name. By law, they have to take care of you without regard to your ability to pay. WHAT A COUNTRY!

Thank you for making my argument for me, Timo! Because that stupid system is exactly why national healthcare would be better.
Given that we ARE going to provide medical treatment for everyone who needs it, why not do it the sensible—and cheap—way, instead of relying on expensive ER visits?
The alternative, of course, would be to simply deny healthcare to anyone who couldn’t pay for it. But I’m pretty sure we’re not that barbaric and stupid yet.

Yup, sensible and cheap would mean something like McCain had in mind - everyone buys health insurance and the govt makes it affordable through the tax system. Just like what happens now when it comes to food. Everyone buys their own, to their own liking, and the govt helps out when needed. If I shouldn’t buy Ross Perot his groceries then there is no reason I should buy him his healthcare.
