McCain on SNL: ‘I’m a true maverick. A Republican without money.’

For a presidential candidate whose campaign could be tanking, Republican John McCain appeared relaxed — and fun — on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” giving viewers a taste of the version that ran in 2000.

The content was also telling. Because if McCain had approval over the SNL skits, he also approval over some sly digs made at the expense of his running mate, Sarah Palin/Tina Fey, in the opening skit.

The pair was featured on QVC, hawking campaign ware and jewelry: “You can’t go wrong with McCain fine gold,” the candidate said.

Ba-dum-bump.

Says McCain: “Would I rather be on three major networks? Of course. But I’m a true maverick — a Republican without money.”

And in an aside, his running mate goes “rogue” with Palin 2012 T-shirts.

“Because I am not going anywhere,” says Palin/Fey. “And I’m certainly not going back to Alaska, If I’m not going to the WhiteHhouse, I’m either running in four years or I’m going to be a white Oprah. I’m good either way.”

McCain also looked comfortable on the “Weekend Update” segment below, listing the radical strategies he might adapt in the final 72 hours of the campaign. His options: Reverse Maverick, Double Maverick, the Sad Grandpa, the Charleston, the Forest Gump, and the Rocky IV.

I think the odds are McCain waited too late in his campaign to appear on SNL in order to help garner the demographic votes he’s going after now. It’s been widely reported that many voters have already taken advantage of the early voting available.

I believe McCain did a little, too late for himself. Palin is doing a fine job of alienating herself to all groups systematically.

It’s not going to help his campaign but it WAS the only funny thing on SNL last night. Even Cindy McCain played along. It was nice to see them act human for a change.

This truly speaks to the judgement of McCain…I see no humor of spoofing yourself during this very important time/election. He looked like more of an idiot than Palin did during her appearance.

Because McCain does NOT stand up for the middle man,has distorted the truth about Obama,I wouldn’t vote for him.He has run the worst and lowest form of campaigning I have ever seen! Now he is letting the GOP do his dirty work for him by putting out a new AD about OBAMA and his association with Rev. Wright.I have lost ALL respect for McCain and the GOP!

Any chance they will skewer Saxby Chambliss on this show? The possibilities are endless!

It is either nice to know McCain has the ability to laugh at himself or else he again showed terrible judgement like his pick of Palin. I am not sure, in a serious election, which one is worse.

Obama voted 100% of the time with his party, and about 2/3 of the time with President Bush. McCain voting 90% of the time with his party is a red herring.

If you love abortion, vote Obama. Otherwise, vote McCain.

Well if it is a red herring, its a red herring that John McCain said himself.

It’s just a shame that THIS version of John McCain didn’t run for president this time out (like he did in 2000). I would have voted for him.

Why do you support Saxby?

Do you still support Saxby in thinking tax cuts without proper spending cuts are a good idea?

Do you still support Saxby on unlimited signing authority by the executive branch?

Do you still support Saxby on BIO FUEL (Farm Bill) scam?

Do you still support Saxby on education via the failed heavy handed Federal Program NCLB?

Do you support Saxby on the bailout bill?

I could ad more but this alone would be interesting!

McCain was moderately funny and showed good character in doing this. If he’d showed similar character throughout the campaign rather than selling out to pander to the extremists, he’d be doing better in the election.

McCain’s not a bad person… he’s just not the right choice for president this year.
