A pair of hauntings: Cleland on Chambliss, and Fair Taxers dog Martin
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Max Cleland has decided what he’ll be for Halloween. He’s going as the Ghost of Elections Past.
The former U.S. senator, defeated by current Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss, has a short piece posted today on the Huffington Post, recapping that 2002 race.
You think there’s still some anger there? These are the last two paragraphs:
“I believe that justice can sometimes be delayed, but it can never be denied. I served my country to the best of my ability and I hope to serve it again. And like Jim Martin, I will serve with character, dignity and grace.
“Something I can not say about the man I pray he replaces.”
Speaking of haunting, supporters of the Fair Tax have decided that Jim Martin, the Democratic candidate in the U.S. Senate race, is worth their undivided attention.
Last night, a group of about a dozen sign-waving Fair Taxers unexpectedly met the Martin campaign bus when it pulled up for a planned rally at a law office near Lawrenceville.
Fair Taxers began shouting “Run, Jim, run!” And not as an endorsement, according to my AJC colleague Jim Tharpe, who was there.
“This isn’t a Republican issue, this is not a Democratic issue, this is an American issue,” yelled Stephen Arnold of Loganville. Martin’s handlers quickly moved his three dozen supporters inside the law offices of Andrew, Merritt, Reilly and Smith LLP, where Martin praised Barack Obama and vowed to defeat Chambliss.
The Fair Taxers were still there, and shouting, when Martin left — campaigners pulled the bus up close to help him avoid the protesters.
Martin has come out against the Fair Tax, but quietly. He’s no vociferous opponent like Libertarian Allen Buckley, who has called the national sales tax program a “sham.”
But the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee used Chambliss’ support of the Fair Tax in its first TV attack against the Republican.

Puke! Why pray tell do former washed up Democrat politicians like Cleland and Carter continue to think what they say and think somehow has relevance today?

Because they did a hell of a lot better job than the crew currently in office.

And as for the Fair Tax, I look at it, and it SEEMS like a good idea.
But then I notice that most of the people advocating it seem to think Bush was a good president…..and that they should vote for Bob Barr or John McCain.
When I see someone who advocates Universal Health Care (by whatever means, government controlled or actually affordable private insurance) advocating the fair tax, then I’ll put more credibility to it.

Sissy Saxby questioned the COURAGE of a man who lost three limbs in Vietnam. No wonder Cleland is still angry. Who wouldn’t be?

Anyone the Unfair Tax cult hates that much sounds like a worthwhile candidate. Martin’s got my vote—especially against an embarrassment like Chambliss.

The FairTax[tm] supporters are clearly members of some obscure socialist party that are scared of Martin. Perhaps they think that they have a better chance of implementing their socialist agenda with Chambliss. After all, that FairTax[tm] bill is nothing less than socialism in disguise. With it, all taxpayers would be permanently hooked to the government for their monthly check — the monthly government payment that the FairTax[tm] bill refers to as a prebate. Then again, socialism by any other name is still socialism. And that’s just the beginning. With the FairTax[tm], there is no incentive to get up off your buttocks and work because all you have to do is just sit in your recliner and wait for the FairTax[tm] monthly prebate check to arrive. With the current system, people with lower incomes actually get an incentive to work via the income tax credit. It actually motivates people to get out and earn a living and it gets phased out as the new worker gets pay raises. That’s the proper way to get people to work and pay their fair tax.

The fair tax is a program where EVERYONE gets to pay for the services they receive from the government. It cleans up the tax system we have now, and it returns some of the control of the current spending to the citizen. That is what democrats and socialists are afraid of. You, the citizen can determine what your tax will be, by controlling your spending!! It would encourage people to think about saving their money, instead of blowing it on a new Escalade with spreewells. If you don’t like the policies of your current administration, you can basically curtail all unnecessary spending until it is over. Let’s see Barack redistribute your wealth under this program, not gonna happen!!

And Saxby Chambliss is running one of the nastiest smear campaigns possible. I thought what he did to Cleland was bad, but the lies he is telling about Martin are worse. I hope there is a “special place” for those who lie like that for their own benefit. Turn the rascal out on his tail and let him and his bad knee and his son actually WORK for a living!
