DEL.ICIO.USA pairing of Vietnam vets: Jim Webb takes up for Jim Martin

U.S. Sen. Jim Webb (D-Virginia), a Vietnam veteran, was in Atlanta on Tuesday morning to make a brief outdoor appearance for Democrat Jim Martin, another veteran of that conflict, in the tightening Georgia race for U.S. Senate.
Webb spoke at the Pete Wheeler Georgia War Memorial near the state Capitol in front of about 50 union members and veterans, some carrying signs that read: “Georgia Veterans for Obama.” My AJC colleague Jim Tharpe was there.
For six years, Democrats here and in Washington have carried a grudge against Saxby Chambliss, the Republican incumbent, who beat Max Cleland in 2002 — in part with a TV ad that questioned the commitment of Cleland, a triple amputee and Vietnam vet, to national security. Chambliss, who is roughly the same age, received a deferment from military service.
But Webb backed away from any pointed criticism of Chambliss. Both sit on the Senate Armed Services Committee. “The political evaluation of Sen. Chambliss is something the people of Georgia should be making,” Webb said, when specifically asked about that 2002 TV ad.
The ex-marine instead focused his endorsement of Martin, who served in a non-combat assignment during the Vietnam War. And yet there was this:
“[Martin] will not have to go to committee meetings to know what it’s like to serve in the military,” Webb said.

I am sorry my son Winston has been stealing names here. See we don’t know who his father is but think he was a member of the UGA baseball team. When 1 of his Clayton county school chums told him that Saxby had 4f’d the draft but had still be able to play baseball for UGA. Little Winston decided that Saxby was his father. I have told him that I have never been that hard up but little Winston is not the sharpest tool around. Again I am so sorry but it’s hard to control at 9th grader when he is nearly 21.

Based on meeting Navy Cross-winner Jim Webb this morning at our Veterans Memorial downtown, looking him in the eye and having an honest conversation with him, I’ll be working to get him elected president after President Obama completes his terms in office. He is authentic. He shakes hands like a proper American man and has no fear of, or uneasiness with, the People.
On the other hand, “Not Ga Values,” no name was given by the rat taking the peanut butter when the trap sprang and ended it. You got something honest to say? Use the name your father gave you, if your mother ever told you what it is.
Webb is righteous and he stands for Martin. That’s good enough for this proud Atlantan. Georgia is the future of America and President Obama will need all the help we can provide.
Let’s make Jim Martin our senator and give the draft-dodging hypocrite Chambliss, the Closet-Queen-in-Chief’s “good buddy” who has helped drive our ship of state onto the rocks, the walking papers he so richly deserves.
Let’s elect the righteous that G-d may bless America once more.

I have heard very little from Sen. Chambliss during his tenure in Washington, and the first notable statement he made was an attack ad on his opponent in this year’s election race. No defense of the national interests served by the Iraq campaign. No warnings of the changing economic environment due to international trade, or the impact of globalization on Georgia. During Chambliss’s term, North Carolina has increased its hold on the claim to be the financial center of the South. This senatorial campaign has been an embarrassment to the democratic tradition [ which, to be fair, has a long history of embarrassments]. I think Georgia deserves better grounded, more competent public officials and hope this year may mark a turning point in the public reaction to the preening lawyers both parties constantly serve up. Demand more, Georgia.

Anyone who crows about being a VietNam veteran who was a Caravelle Commando in Saigon is like a kid having fantasies! The guys who humped thru the mud are the real veterans of that war, not the klutzes who worked in an office ‘til 4p.m. then hit the Caravelle fo4 drinks at happy hour. The National Guard and Enlisted Reserve was officially closed when Bush and other Congressmen’s sons were cheated past the waiting list.
Any who equate the honorable duty of the 9.2 million U.S. Armed Forces Veterans, sworn to The Oath under the UCMJ during the Vietnam Era, with dodging the draft by getting cheated into a Vietnam-Free Guard unit or faking a “magical” injury for a draft deferment, should support 9/11-committing closet-queens like Bush and his “good buddy” Saxby Chambliss.
