Sarah Palin on SNL: ‘Caribou Barbie’ raises the house — and Tina Fey was there, too
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sarah Palin, the Republican nominee for vice president, survived NBC’ “Saturday Night Live” in fine fashion last night.
But darned if you could tell whether it was her or Tina Fey in the early moments of the opening skit. (It was Fey who started the fauxpress conference off, and Palin finished it.)
Politically, what pushed the envelope? SNL persuaded the real Palin to utter one of her famous nicknames: “Caribou Barbie.”
In a second “Weekend Update” skit, we had Eskimos, Todd the snowmachine racer, a dying moose, and a Republican vice presidential nominee who showed she can actually keep a beat:

Gov. Palin was funny, witty and beautiful. I applaud the SNL for keeping it tasteful. (A moment ago, I read a stupid commentary on a stupid UK website, demonstrating that its owners/authors have no idea what SNL humor is about. Contrary to that commentary, Ms. Palin did not enter a “den of thieves” and she was not “kept away” from getting in contact with the cast, including Ms. Fey and Mr. Brolin.) While Ms. Fey is undoubtedly very talented, their appearance together underscored that her impersonation is a caricature (as it is intended to be). The real Gov. Palin is funny, witty and beautiful. She has demonstrated that while she undoubtedly treats the issues seriously, she has an ability to treat herself with a self-deprecating humor. Good for her. The night belonged to Ms. Pohler, however, especially in the pregnant Texas party girl skit.

This was priceless! You have to give it to the woman for being able to laugh right through this and not take it so seriously. Maybe if Obama would get out of his stuffed shirt for a minute he just might look human.

Palin did not make any good impression. Basically she just stood there helpless.y and smiling and pretending she had a sense of humour. She did not actively interact with anyone nor did she do anything to actively display any kind of humour. When Alec Baldwin made her say “Caribou Barbie” you could see how helpless and offended she was and her backlash was simply uninspired and boring and rather rude but in no way funny. She didn’t even manage to introduce herself to Baldwin. Not enough guts nor wits I guess. Really what is funny about telling an experienced actor like Alex Baldwin that you liked his brother Steven better? That’s cheap. Pity Baldwin didn’t say with a big smile: “Yeah, I too like Steven better.” And seriously what is funny or self-depreciating about claiming that Fey’s performance of Palin’s press conferences didn’t resemble the real press conferences? That came across as stiff and boring. Palin didn’t even manage to smile nor to laugh about Fey’s perfomance. Caribou barbie has no sense of humor nor any self-reflexive skills.

This is too funny. I think Palin conducted herself as she should have..I saw a comment about Obama - he has been on SNL - twice. It’s good to see candidates able to laugh at themselves. I personally am voting for McCain/Palin. While I don’t agree with either candidate 100% there are too many unanswered questions about Obama..like where was he born and why he won’t release his birth certificate. If Obama was more forthcoming - without the media having to drag information out of him - he may have been my choice but not anymore -

More to the point: What is funny about an actor — not a political opponent, but an actor — calling Sarah a “horrible woman” to her face? That is puerile, mean spirited and typical of the koolaid drinking Obamabot mind.
Sarah was beautiful and poised and I loved her.

Hey Fey Rocks… you do know that she did not write the sketch, right?
But I am betting that she could have brought the house down with an Emmy nomination worthy performance, and you would have written the exact same thing.
I can’t stand when people are so wrapped up in their politics that they can’t see when the other side is having fun/makes a point/does something good.

I agree with Fey Rocks… Palin didn’t do anything in way of participation in the fun. She was more like an on-stage observer than participant. I don’t understand those wo say she was funny and witty… how? She may be all those in real life, but none of it was displayed during the SNL show.

Dear Fey Rocks:
Don’t know which show you were watching last night, but everyone though that Palin’s performance was charming and delightful.
As to your comments about the opening sequence and her lack of words through out her parts, let me remind you she did not get a script until the last minute and she was sticking to what the producers wanted her to say. Her parts were kept simply due to her lack of being able to prepare.
You might also want to remember that Sarah had been on the road speaking to crowds all day reminding them that the Chosen One(keep your stinking hands off of my money, I can spread my wealth myself), wanted to turn us into a socialist society. So the woman probably did not look as lively as she would normally because she was probably tired.
You strike me as someone who doesn’t like her anyway. Don’t worry, I’ll love her enough for both of us.
Palin for President.

Amazing… Are we truely disappointed that a Gov. and future VP can’t rap or act on TV? I forgot to add that to my list of things to figure in when selecting our future Leaders. If acting, and pretending to be something other than what you are is a truely the deciding factor for our next President/VP. Obama/Biden will certainly win by a LANDSLIDE. I am glad there still seems to be other people like me, who vote on issues and not the ability to SAY and PRETEND to be on the side of “tax paying” Americans. RELAX and ENJOY the show, lol

To McCain/Palin Supporter: FYI- Obama was born in Hawaii. Under the Constitution, you must be born in this country to be eligible for president. If we were not sure where Obama was born, then he wouldn’t even be in the running. Wherever you get your info is clearly biased and only meant to smear someone. I suggest you read other sources of info besides the ones you typically read— even if you disagree with them. It’s the intellectually honest thing to do.

Sarah Palin had fun, joined in the fun in a dignified manner and even with the limited amount of words, spoke with the firmness we would expect of a VP. We were in Alaska when she was nominated to run for VP and citizens there volunteered their opinions which were that they love her. We love her too and she is exactly what we need to straighten out Washington.

I’m an Obama supporter and I thought this was funny. I think it’s great when politicians have a sense of humor. I don’t think a comedy appearance should have a lot of bearing one way or another as to whether or not people should vote for him.
Two other quick notes - I find it ironic that she participated in a fake press conference before she participated in a real one.
To the person who says there are unanswered questions about where Obama was born - I suggest you visit www.fightthesmears.com - It’s part of Obama’s campaign website and he’s posted a copy of his birth certificate on there. The folks over at www.factcheck.org have examined his birth certificate as well. So there is no question about his origin of birth - contrary to what an anti-Obama site/lawsuit with no evidence say. Candidates typically don’t mail copies of their birth certificate to every voter in America, sorry to disappoint you. If that was your only hangup about Obama - welcome to the crowd of Obama Supporters. If you chose to oppose Obama do so because you disagree with his plans, not because of whether or not he was born in the lower 48 states.

Yes she was funny, and seemed to have sense of humor about the whole thing; but I still don’t want her running my country. You got owned by Hillary Supporter. You should just keep your trash hate filled comments out of these blogs. I love how McCain/Palin supporters are labeled by people as hateful and degrading on a leftist newspaper blog. No surprise there.
Maybe “you people” (don’t get your panties in a wad I mean “liberals” not african americans; I know thats what you were thinking) should take a look in the mirror or at least read what you write. There is no way you can say that what the McCain/Palin supporters are writing are even close to being as hate filled as yours. Get a clue or possibly a brain and then converse like civil human beings please.
Palin read from a script folks so if you cannot see that then you are just lost anyway. If you do not like her policies or view points then fine, but degrading her personality or citing talking points of how the leftist media views her is just plain ignorant.
I thought she handled herself with class and was able to have a laugh about herself. I think anyone would look a little stiff being on live t.v. when all the attention was on you and you were being made fun of. She did great!

Yes, Fey Rocks seems to be afflicted with perceptual degradation complicated by some cultural myopia. I agree with your summation. This is cyclic politics. We will go thru the same saga every Four years. And guess what folks, the main complaint every Four years is usually economics based —- regardless of who is in office. Read the history— industrial plants and jobs have been going South, or overseas for years.

I’m an independent, voting Obama. That said, I think Palin did a good job. Everyone appreciates self-deprecating humor. She was poised, and funny- because she had good comic timing. To “Fey Rocks”, concerning your problems with her interacting with Baldwin- this wasn’t improv you nut, it was scripted! It was a pre-written, pre-rehearsed (tens of times), and then performed. Thats why there was a camera there! Wahlberg wasn’t really threatening Lorne Michaels, Baldwin really knew it was Palin, Baldwin didn’t “make” Palin say anything, and Palin was making a joke, not an insult, when she said Stephen was her fav Baldwin brother.
They didn’t just happen to have a live feed camera, lighting, and actors, all in the same place by coincidence.
I can’t tell if some of you’re blinded by fanaticism, or just dense. It was comedy people. Yes it was “live”, but live doesnt mean unscripted or unrehearsed. Very few people can pull off improv comedy, thats why its not real popular on tv. Even reality shows are scripted and “steered” to a certain extent. Enjoy it for what it was- your insane interpretations say far more about your psychopathology than the show.
Baldwin, Fey, Pohler were (as always) all great. Palin was fun and a good sport. Take a step back and a deep breath- you’ll not only understand life better, but enjoy it more as well. When SNL starts to look real to you, it’s time for you to take your meds and turn off the aptly named “boob tube”.

Say what you want, ultimately it comes down to is she qualified to become the president if need be. Hell no. I was leaning McCain prior to his selection of Palin. I could think of at least 100 more qualified Republicans capable of running the show if, heaven forbid, 72-year old, cancer surviving, non-health record disclosing, John McCain were to pass. My supposedly healthy dad died at the age of 58 so don’t tell me it is a real possibility. The job of the VP is to be able to give advice to the Pres. What advice could she possibly give to McCain. How to drop a puck at a hockey game . How to avoid questions from the media. No candidate is perfect, I got that. That is why I change my vote. The tape of Palin’s exorcism from witchcraft is stranger than anything I have seen about Obama. She is quoted as saying she likes to go to the pro-American parts of the country . . and what qualifies an area as pro-American. She talks about education, her daughter does not appear to be attending high school and the boyfriend dropped out. Yes, he is an electrician’s apprentice now, but it was not that easy for my son to become an electrician’s apprentice plus he had to take college classes - Let’s just be honest, she is cute, gutsy, but not presidential material.

News from the Atlanta Institue of Arbitrary Quantification:
Palin is unadulterated —-
One piece of very important, distinguising and undeniable data is that Palin is not a career Washington-ite, and has not operated within the sphere of polluted and tarnished politics; as so many of our executive and representative officials have. She is not the typical entrenched politician.
Like her or not, she owes no favors nor votes to any congressional entity or individual. At present, amid the current field, she is unique in that regard. Berate if you must, but be open enough to realise and respect different perspectives. Is that not what part of being an American is all about ?
If you are among the high percentage of “average Americans”, she would presumably afford you the best choice in unadulterated represention.
God Bless spell-check..

At age 40, I realized that I knew that it did, but nothing of HOW the world turned — from routine repression to relative freedom for women.
I was a pre-teen in the 60s and was vaguely aware of bra-burning and women’s ‘liberation.’ But nothing was taught in school - there were no tv shows - no popular books that would make a person of my generation understand what it took to instill in me the firm belief that there was nothing in the world that I as a woman could not do.
I believe that my generation of women was the first to come of age with most of us believing, taking it for granted, assuming that the world would be fair to us and that our future would be glorious.
Of course, that hasn’t always been the case, though my life has been blessed with amazing opportunities that my mother and grandmother would not have dreamed of.
But when I realized that I didn’t know how my freedom happened I set out on a journey of discovery and I am now strengthened by the inspiration of countless suffragettes.
I realize I stand on their strong shoulders, and on the shoulders of other women who keep pushing for more than voting rights, who demand the full range of human rights for women.
I want to share that inspiration with other women.
Can you even imagine being a woman and NOT being able to vote?
Thanks to the suffragettes, America has women voters and wide range of women candidates, and we are a better country for it!
Women have voices and choices! Just like men.

remember when allen iverson went off about ‘practice’, we are talking about practice. it reminds me of “President Palin, we are talking about President Palin. Really, President Palin, come on. Hail to the chief Palin. It sounds so Incredulous to even consept of President Palin. One thing about Obama, McCain, and Biden, they all have wanted to be president and the responsibilty that goes with it. Not Palin, she wanted to be Miss Alaska and now is in a position to be the leader of the free world due only to the decision making ability of McCain to pacify his party. I want someone to be president who actually had aspirations to be president to make a different, Republican or Democrat

Palin was just a prop on the show.
Is there any reason she was there at all ? She couldn’t say anything self deprecating /poke fun at herself . She did not make fun of the show or the her opponents or about anything at all for that matter.
I guess, at the last minute the writers decided the futility of having her play anyone/thing, but due to the commitments had to have her around. So, they made her a prop. Good for them .

I think snl was great last night. I’m voting for Obama and I thought Sarah Palin was great too. But when Amy shot that moose, it was a wrap for me. That was the funniest part. Everyone should just relax during these last 2 weeks before the election b/c should have their minds made up by now and laugh at everything that has been going on.

Hey rev - Wow, such profound thought.. thanks for the enlightenment; gee, what a dumb redneck I am — why- I never knew anybody was trying to keep you down. Why, I’m too busy trying to keep myself afloat. Despite my better judgement in letting you suck me in, I’ll accomodate you and respond a little herein…Seems we all got the same opportunity rev - just not a promise of success. Guess you gotta blame somebody, huh? Shame that modern science can’t do something to correct that anomaly that occurs at the genetic level… you know, Whites being the only race with the inherent DNA race/hate gene and all. Check your pulse Uncle, cause I know you got some math skills - Obama’s a Great candidate, and the numbers are plain, (to most that is), he’d never have reached this far without a lot of white support and appeal to all. So tell me rev, who really is color blind here, and who just purports to be ? ? Go B.O. !

Obama was born in the USA. McCain was not…if there is any question about who is constitutionally qualified, you shouldn’t worry about Obama.
Obama is not a socialist. I can’t believe that people that will be voting in this election fall for that crap

While walking across the church parking lot this morning I noticed a Lexus RX with 2 Obama stickers on the back. Our pastor (a couple of months ago) commented that one of the presidential candidates couldn’t tell when life began while the other candidate instantly said “at conception.” It’s appalling that this message was lost on the Lexus driver.
In plain sight in back of the Lexus vehicle was a large McCain-Palin yard sign. Our good church-attending, abortion-embracing Obama supporter is also a thief it seems
The Lexus driver doesn’t have to explain anything to me, but I’d be curious as to what s/he tells God.
May God help our country.

People like Michael Phelps and Sarah Palin are difficult to judge when they appear on SNL. Their sense of humor doesn’t show very well because they are out of their comfort zone, so to speak… they rely on funny sketches and the perfect comedic timing of the SNL cast to be funny. All they can really do is be good sports about it, and the show will be funny. I thought she was great last night- she wasn’t trying to show us how funny she can be, just to show us that she has a sense of humor.
Also, Tiny Fey was hilarious as always. “The real one?”

I thought Sarah was great. Especially considering she was in EXTREMELY hostile territory. I thought she handled herself with a lot of grace. SNL should be very happy she is a VP candidate because Tina Fey as Sarah Palin is the only funny thing on the show. It was hard to sit through all the terrible skits to see Sarah.

It is refreshing to see Governor Palin taking time to relax and enjoy. The Roast with Mc Cain and Obama showed them as real, down to earth people. No matter who wins, these folks will be friends and work together….that is what politicians do. Lighten up and enjoy these fun moments when we are going through difficult days. America will survive..perhaps we have had it too easy for a long time. America has changed because the world has changed. We are still the best!

it’s scripted so don’t blame, or applaud, palin for her “wit” and “humor” or lack thereof.
obama was born in hawaii in august, 1961. yeah yeah theres all that hype about it being forged because of it saying “african” under father’s race because that wouldn’t be the correct terminology of the time..but though that may not be the correct term for african americans at the time, obama’s father was actually born in kenya and would be african so the terminology may not be the same as a black man born in america.
if you must insult others through comments online, at least check your own grammar and spelling before calling other people dumb or “dimwits.” oh, and if you’re planning on making fun of those who do make mistakes in their post, try not to use little abbreviations like “rofl” because that makes you sound just as unintelligent, sorry. on that note, if i make any mistakes in this post, then whoops, oh well, i’m not condemning anyone for making mistakes trust me.
does anyone honestly think palin is better looking than fey, and if so, would that make any difference whatsoever in palin being vice president?
if you’re going to insult white people, that is just being racist and totally destroying all that working towards “equality” of past blacks, so why don’t we just leave all race out of this entire situation because it was decided a while ago that no rights would be denied based on race or color. and by the way, the kkk is not “dead” but very much still a part of life in some places, which sucks, i’ll just leave it at that.
stop making all “chuch-goers” look republican, and all obama supporters looking like thieves. because i’m sure your perfect christian self has never sinned..oh wait yes you have, and you should realize that all sins are equal in the eyes of god. but this has nothing to do with the election at all considering separation of church and state. plus, obama is religious and has christian faith, and just because he’s not as conservative and traditional as a lot of christians, people are uncomfortable and immediately close minded to him.
it’s not that palin would “rather do a comedy sketch than a serious [not serous by the way] interview,” she did both, and don’t use her being on snl as any sort of weapon like she’s not serious about politics; obama has been on snl too so just accept it as healthy of them being able to laugh at themselves sometimes as well as actually debate and be serious when they need to be. you need balance.
the end. i love you. jesus for president. or obama. not that they’re equal. alright thats really the end.

You go Sarah, that was fabulous!! The reason they didn’t have them stand side by side is b/c that would make it apparent that Fey really is not identical to Palin. Palin is prettier! Their faces are shaped differently & Fey didn’t want to make that obvious. She has a great sense of humor & was so confident & funny! What a trouper…Love love love Palin & you know what, she can run this country no problem & probably better than the good old boys who have been running it up ‘til now!

Fey Rocks: You are an inbecile. SNL is a TV show that is written by writers and producers. Very little is done of the cuff especially the intros where suprise guests pop in from time to time. Alec was told EXACTLY what to say by the means of cue cards. Painfully obvious to anyone except people like you. Palin’s parts were written as was Oliver Stone’s small part. What a maroon.

Palin’s appearance was a strong but simple statement: “We know we’re not going to win so, let’s have some fun with it.”
In many ways, this marks a gracious loser.
On another note: It’s very troubling to me that people want an “ordinary” person to lead our country. I believe this country deserves and EXTRAORDINARY President. I like ordinary folks too but I wouldn’t select one as the leader of the free world.

Recently found to have committed abuse of public office, heresy/treason in our civil/credal religion of Americanism, Palin, a confirmed lying hypocrite, outside of grace, and cursed for all to see and know, has been a perfect political target for patriotic Tina Fey and SNL, and proof that Married to the Mob McCain, who “brung her,” a serial adulterer and Keating Five alum, is truly a bulletheaded moron and Mussolini wannabe.
Her willingness, during this obligatory, sine qua non, appearance, to bounce to the beat while excoriating, eviscerating rap lyrics were voiced next to her, about her, by the cast members, doesn’t show a sense of humor, it shows her absence of dignity and the truth of her being an inbred whitetrash, racist, hate-monger…like any who still support her…soon to be washed away by the tide of American history. D.V.
The People must now unify under the Creed/Mottoes to restore the Republc, the Constitution, and Our Sovereignty. This will only take place with broad understanding of the circumstances which have enabled a bi-partisan false-elite to usurp us.
America is a dream. By Covenant Our Founders believed that dream to be G-d’s. We must all dream that One Dream, together, One People, One Nation, One Blood: Americans.
Rome’s Fifth Column must be expropriated to pay off the debt under whose bondage they have attempted to place the People. It’s treasonous leaders must be righteously tried and executed, including Bush and Cheney for acting as their “mechanics” committing 9/11, as Bush1 committed the Kennedy Assassination for the same faction.
The People must be free in Truth and Justice.
This is no laughing matter. Our posterity depends on it.
“They ” know what they’re doing. Clay-footed Obama is only a small step in the right direction.

Must not have seen Peterson’s pulped face, “SB.” His tackling me trapped my dogleash, and left wrist it was on, between us. With one hand he got enough to convince him to crawl off me even though two of his pals jumped on my legs. He’s a punk and a loser. Apparently he’s a wife-beater too. Just your kind.
He’s gone back to the northwoods as all fascist, carpetbagging papists should, so it’s just as well I didn’t end him for attacking me and my wife’s puppy. One of the two cops in on it, or his proptop sidekick might have popped me. Real “men.”
Funny how the two blue-eyed blond cops involved covering it up and lying about it had unusual last names - the same as Bush-family first cousins. Getting a homosexual draft-dodger cheated into the White House by the Roman Catholics on the Supreme Court took plenty of help by thugs from all over. False elites have “grassroot” rot supporting them. Their core supporters are the same as McCain’s: fascist, racist, whitetrash inbreds.
Pick sides: America by the Creed under G-d; or, the Roman Anti-Christ’s Fifth Column, pedophile priesthood, and fascist plutocracy.
Whigs soaked the ground with “fertilizer” for the Tree of Liberty from the veins of Tories in 1776…and may have to again soon enough if they try stealing this election, too.
Inbred whitetrash may be popped out below the Mason-Dixon Line…but that doesn’t really “qualify” as “Southern Born.”
True Southerners never supported the blowhard carpetbagger Peterson. Only wannabes, papists, fascists and his pedophile fellowtravelers miss him.
Maybe you should join your own kind where he went.
Atlanta doen’t need him or anyone else like him…whether named or nameless.

Seriously, if you think Obama is a terrorist you’re too dumb to vote. He’s not a terrorist, there is no evidence whatsoever that he is. If you think having Ayers as an aquaintance makes him a terrorist, then i guess all of Ayers aquaintances are also terrorist by that logic, including all of his students (which have probably spent more time with him than Barack). Now, on the other hand, Palin’s husband has an interesting history, and he’s much more than an aquaintance to her… Also, McCain is a self admitted adulterer. I didn’t support Clinton because of that, and i’m definatly not going to support McCain, cheaters are weak.
