Independent running against Mike Jacobs for House seat says she’d caucus with Democrats

Michelle Conlon is running as an independent against Democrat-turned-Republican state Rep. Mike Jacobs of Atlanta, but she won’t necessarily be an independent if she gets elected.

Conlon and House Minority Leader DuBose Porter (D-Dublin) held a conference call with reporters this morning, including my AJC colleague James Salzer, to declare that she’d caucus with the Democrats if she beats Jacobs.

A check by Salzer shows Conlon’s campaign has received about $6,000 from House Democratic leaders and Democratic groups. Conlon has yet to file campaign reports due earlier this month and owes $150 in late fees, according to the State Ethics Commission.

Jacobs’ defeat would have special meaning for Democrats. He was elected as a Democrat from his DeKalb County district, then switched parties last year. The Democrat who filed to run against him this year was disqualified for residency problems.

Conlon told reporters her views align more with Democrats. “We will be the party that leads Georgia out of the mess we’re in,” she said.

She should have to run as a Democrat if she is already announcing that she plans to essentially BE a Democrat if elected.

If it is too late for her to change party affiliation, she should be removed from the ballot for lieing about party affiliation on the initial application.

Jacobs shouldn’t have switched parties. Republicans have gravely compromised our state and our nation. If Jacobs doesn’t recognize that, he’s a fool.

Using Jeff’s logic, Mike Jacobs should be removed from the ballot… hey, come to think of it, that’s a great idea :)

Georgian:

What fraud has Jacobs committed? If a person’s principles do not align with the party they were ran as during the election and they decide to change after the election, I have no problem with that going any direction. (It is why I do my best to find their principles before voting for them, and if they have none, they don’t get my vote to begin with!)

My problem here is that there is a person who will be listed as ‘Independent’ on the ballot, even though she is CLEARLY aligned with the Democratic Party. In other words, she is NOT ‘Independent’. She IS a ‘Democrat’. Therefore, she commits fraud by running as an ‘Independent’.

Jeff: I find your logic to be lopsided at best… unless you agree with the following: By your reasoning, Jacobs has been defrauding the voters since the day he switched to a party other than the one CLEARLY listed on the ballot next to his name. (which is true, Jacobs has no core values).

If you don’t agree with that, how can you have these grave concerns about an independent who will sometimes vote with the Dems, while completely overlooking Jacobs lying to me and other voters about his party affiliation?

Jacobs should have resigned if he wanted to go back on his core promises and give the voters a chance to have a say. Instead he’s doing everything possible to keep the voters shut out. Thank God Conlon is running b/c it will be the closest thing we will get this time around to a referendum on Jacob’s lack of core values and lies… and using your argument, which I will do, defrauding voters!

Georgian:

At the time you voted for him, Jacobs was a Democrat, and this was clearly stated on the ballot.

If it turns out (as it did) that his principles more closely align with that of another party and he switches AFTER the election, so be it. (I would say the same if he as going the other direction, or even from Democrat to Green, Democrat to Libertarian, Libertarian to Democrat, Libertarian to Republican, etc)

At the next election, you would have the choice to vote for him (under his new party) or not. Note that even in uncontested elections, you do NOT have to vote for the only one running. (You could do as I did in one of the primaries down here and simply not vote in that race.)

Again, my contention here is that you have a person listed as one party on the ballot, even though this person CLEARLY identifies with a different party. If this person ran as an Independent, was sworn in as an Independent, and then the very next day switched to the Democratic party (again, or any other), I would have no problem with this.

Jacobs CLEARLY identified with another party when he last ran as a Democrat, thereby committing the same fraud you claim Michelle Conlon is trying to perpetuate. He lied and defrauded voters and supporters from his first election. If someone has principles they don’t change 180 degrees in 6 months. Give me a break.

The parties didn’t change their core values, Mike Jacobs lost his.

Jason:

But was it public knowledge at the time of the last election that he identified with another party?

If so, you are correct in stating that he committed the same fraud Conlon is now committing.

If not, there was nothing wrong with his action, and again, I say that no matter where he starts or finishes.

In this case, it IS public knowledge that Conlon is, in fact, a Democrat, even though she is running as an Independent.

This is fraud, plain and simple.

Let’s clear something up - she is a democrat. The reason she did not run as a democrat is she was intimidated out of the Dem Primary by that moron Keith Gross. So once Gross flamed out, her only option was to run as an independent. So stating she is going to caucus with Democrats isn’t even newsworthy.

What is more interesting is a woman who cowered at the thought of running against Keith Gross in the Dem Primary now things she has the guts to represent her district at the Statehouse - has anyone explained to Conlon that tough decisions have to be made in Atlanta. It’s not all playing patty cakes.

Remember Obama supporters that only Republicans vote on Tuesday and Democrats only vote on Wednesday.

Because of early voting, we Democrats are already voting Mon-Fri… Mike Jacobs and John McCain will be defeated before the first Tuesday in November! Republicans have failed to the greatest degree and should be ashamed.

The commercials are lame. Have you ever seen anyone push one of those wagons? Oh. That’s right. It was staged.

I donate money to Mike Jacobs when he ran as a democrat 4 years ago. Then i donated to his reelection campaign 2 years ago. I contributed to his campaign because he was a democrat. When he switched party, i sent him an email asking him to refund my 2 contribution (a total of $600). He never replied to my request. I emailed him again, he never replied. I called him and left a message asking him to call me back. He never did.

I am taking him to court because i am filling a suit against him next week and he will served before election day. If he thinks he can defraud people like that, he really does not know that i have all the time and the legal expertise to keep on suing from now to Kingdom come. I don’t care about $600, i will donate them to a charity. But i don’t like to be fooled.

I campaigned with Mike for John Kerry four years ago. Mike was at every Democratic meetup and event. He was liked by everyone. When he switched parties, I felt like he was an opportunist and traitor. I said well “I really didn’t know Mike like I thought I did. The independent may caucus with any party they choose. Just like Joe Lieberman does with the Republicans. They don’t have to declare anything to anyone or Party. Kudos to the Independent. I hope she beats the hell out of Mike Jacobs.
