Acknowledging the competition: Chambliss launches two attack ads on Martin

With a pair of attack ads that have been spotted in Atlanta and Savannah, Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss on Wednesday acknowledged that Democrat Jim Martin is someone worth beating down in the U.S. Senate race.

One of the ads attacks Martin’s performance as commissioner of the Department of Human Resources, connecting him to the death of children in DFACS care. The other lumps Martin into the company of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The ads started playing late Tuesday, the same day that the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee said that it had bought about $500,000 worth of advertising time on at least five metro Atlanta television stations for spots to support Martin in his uphill battle.

Scripts for the two ads can be found on the jump. But here’s the first Chambliss attack ad, dubbed “Crisis:”

And here’s the second Chambliss attack ad, dubbed “Democrats:”

Crisis script:

Our economy is in crisis -

Georgia families are losing their homes, their savings, their retirements -

And while Jim Martin talks about the middle class,

He voted to hit Georgia families with the largest tax increase in state history… and voted to raise his own government expense account.

In fact… Jim Martin was fired from his government job… because he betrayed the public trust.

Jim Martin’s record proves…you can’t trust Jim Martin.

I’m Saxby Chambliss and I approve this message.

“Democrats” script:

Democrats control congress …

And our economy is in trouble.

Democrats gave us the highest gas prices in history.

They’ve tried to raise our taxes.

They’ve blocked every effort to regulate subprime lenders.

And these same liberal democrats are supporting Jim Martin.

Our economy is in crisis …and while Jim Martin offers criticisms…

…Saxby Chambliss is working to get our economy back on track…protect taxpayers and homeowners…and put an end to Wall Street abuses.

I’m Saxby Chambliss and I approve this message.

The last ad is not going to be effective for him. He is the one in the senate, the gas prices started rising under a gop controlled senate. The liberal tag won’t work in this election because if it did Obama would be trailing against McCain. Chambliss is trying to hide his own failures in the senate as well as the house. Martin resigned from the DHR, he wasn’t fired. I am a independent who is fed up with chambliss & regrets voting for him over Cleland.

Unfortunately, these ads might work because contrary to what Rusty said, McCain is leading in the polls in Georgia. - A poll on Oct 12 put McCain at 51.0% and Obama at 43.9%. People in this state need to wake up to the facts and stop blindly supporting the Republican party because of social issues. Politician are elected make public policy not retool society.

And how about you guys at the AJC actually commenting on the article - fact checking or something - instead of just saying here are the ads so you can watch them. Be responsible AJC!?!?!

Chambliss is a traitor and has repeatedly violated his oath to support and defend the constitution of the united states.

His recent vote in favor of the taxpayer victimization act (Wall Street payoff)only furthers the point that he is no conservative, and certainly no patriot.

If Mr. Chambliss actually believed in the free market, instead of just paying it lip service, he would have supported free market proposals rather than the obviously FASCIST/SOCIALIST bill that was approved.

Mr. Martin is no saint. He is a socialist too, as are all democrats. A far superior pick would be Alan Buckley, the Libertarian.

One way or the other, Saxby must go. Its right, its american, and it will send a message to all politicians that would vote to destroy our economic future, just to pay off their friends in industry, that the american people will not stand idly by and just take it.

Chambli$$ is getting soft in his old age. Last time he ran against a Vietnam vet, he compared his opponent to Bin Laden and Saddam. This time it’s just Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.

Wonder how Chambliss is going to react when his Selective Service record is brought into the election?

David S, Mr Buckley is in fact a socialist too. He supports a progressive income tax that accomplishes nothing more than income redistribution. He has called the Fair Tax baloney. If he were a true libertarian he would support it like so many others that share conservative, limited government beliefs. Unfortunately, Buckley is no conservative. Chambliss does not deserve re-election, but Jim Martin nor Alan Buckley deserve election either. Where is a Sam Nunn or Paul Coverdale when you need them.

These are absolutely stupid ads.

From any point of view, they are stupid. “Our economy is in crisis and Democrats gave us high gas prices”.

Instead of going straight for the jugular on Martin being fired for the tragedy at

Peter, I am a Republican too. In fact, a very active one. But I am a Republican who is embarrassed that after having a full YEAR to do opposition research and plan his ads against Martin, that this is the best this idiot campaign team could do.

Does anyone remember Mack Mattingly? He blew it the same way.

I will never vote for Martin, but can’t believe how ineffective these flailing and themeless campaign ads are.

At least Saxby is not comparing Jim to Osama Bin Laden like he did to Cleland six years ago (knowing Saxby, it might be coming).

Unlike four deferment Saxby, Jim is a volunteer Vietnam veteran.

Am I the only Georgian bothered by the fact that Saxby’s son is a lobbyist in DC?

Slimy attack ads are Saxby’s MO. Hopefullty Georgia will not re-elect him.

Saxby Chambliss always gets it wrong. Don’t listen to his attack ads. Do the research. Only then will you see that he votes wrong on almost every issue. He voted for a 7-billion dollar bank bailout but believes that it would cost too much to give children healthcare. Like I said, before you go to vote, do some real research of the documented Facts, and don’t just vote for someone based on their clever attack ads (which usually are distortions or downright falsification of the truth).

During the last 8 years Republican Congressmen tried to fix the Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae mess but they were blocked by Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. The Wall Street’s Paulson along with Frank And Dodd wrote the $700,000,000,000.00 bail out Wall Street bill then added $153,000,000,000.00 of PORK for good measure. Our 7 Republican Congressmen voted against this RIP OFF of the taxpayer. Yet Saxby Chambliss (Socialist/RINO,Ga) voted for this waste. Why he has received over $10,621,716.00 from special interest much of it from BANKS & INSURANCE COMPANIES. With Saxby MONEY talks & the Taxpayer walks.

Churchill has stole my name, As a combat vet in Viet Nam there is no way I could vote for Saxby. How about the way Saxby worked with Kennedy, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, And Dodd on Amnest, over ridding President Bush’s 3 Vetoes of Saxby’s farm Bill, the Gang of 10 TRAITORS and the $700,000,000,000. bail out of Wall Street with an added $153,000,000,000.00 of pork. Of course there were not so many people who had given up on the GOP RINO candidate before either. We’ll know on 11/5.

As I’ve said before, maybe Saxby can get the vote of all those voters in Georgia who were in favor of amnesty for illegals, the farm bill, the gang of 10 energy bill, NCLB, the $830 Billion bailout, etc. That might push him on to victory. But not with my vote.

Speaking of misleading ads, how about Martin’s 23% National Sales Tax against Chambliss? It doesn’t mention that virtually all other taxes would be done away with, making us the most tax-friendly country in the world. I look beyond ads and “promises” and look for character and leadership ability in candidates. Chambliss, though not exactly what I want (no candidate ever is), will get my vote.

Saxby was pretty brutal against Cleland last election, but I’m shocked at these ads. The inuendo is more than misleading. I am an independent, and I have written to Sen. Chambliss probably 2 dozen times during his service. His responses have been cookie-cutter, rarely even responding to the correct issue, and never explaining why he voted in a particular way, but instead just spouting the standard line of the Bush administration. While Mccain has indeed broken with the Bush line a number of times, Saxby doesn’t appear to have an original thought in his head. Jim Martin is a native Atlantan, has a rep for working across party lines, and will be efectove for Georgia. Saxby Chambliss is an embarrassment, and these ads just nail that down.

Laurie, I think the sales tax ad is directed at the middle class. Sure, other taxes will be eliminated (although the math on this doesn’t quite add up; the tax as generally conceived would bring in way less for the gov’t than the current tax system. Oh lordy, here come the flat tax trolls. :) ). Personally, I’m against any regressive tax (and I can’t believe the flat taxers have been able to convince so many middle class folks! Guess they weren’t math majors). I can see why you’d find that ad somewhat misleading, since the flax tax claims it would be the only tax. Still, on the whole, Chambliss doesn’t have any room to cry fair where advertising is concerned.
