Lewis on his criticism of GOP rhetoric: He could have said it differently, but his words had the intended effect

U.S. Rep. John Lewis on Tuesday said he had no regrets for claiming that Republican rhetoric in the presidential contest reminded him of words spoken by segregationist Alabama Gov. George Wallace — but he admitted that he could have made his point “in a different way.”

“I do not regret what I said,” Lewis said. “Maybe it could have been said in a different way, because it was not suggesting that John McCain or Sarah Palin was closely related [in] any way to the actions of Governor Wallace.”

Said the Atlanta congressman and Civil Rights icon: “It was all about what I call toxic speech — statements [and] an audience that can unleash bitterness and hatred. And I don’t need anyone to lecture me about my feelings, or what I have observed for more than 50 years.”

Last week, in the face of declining polls, Republicans concentrated on Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and what they called issues of character — and what Democrats called “code words” for race.

Palin in particular repeatedly criticized Obama for “palling around with terrorists.”

“This is not a man who sees America like you and I see America,” she said.

On Saturday, Lewis rocked the presidential campaign with his statement that McCain and Palin “are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse.

“During another period, in the not too distant past, there was a governor of the state of Alabama named George Wallace who also became a presidential candidate.”

In the statement, Lewis linked Wallace’s language to the1963 Birmingham church bombing that killed four little girls.

McCain immediately called Lewis’ remarks “beyond the pale” and called on Obama to repudiate them. The Republican presidential candidate continued to fume on Monday. “It’s unfair. It’s unfair and it’s outrageous,” McCain told CNN.

The Obama campaign said any comparisons to Wallace were out of line, but also said that “Lewis was right to condemn some of the hateful rhetoric that John McCain himself personally rebuked.”

Lewis made his Tuesday remarks at Spelman College, after the unveiling of a video documenting the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery march and the confrontation at the Edmund Pettus bridge between Alabama state troopers and 600 African-American demonstrators.

Speaking with reporters, the congressman said that a comparison that wouldn’t have injected racial images into the 2008 presidential race would have been the McCarthy era of the 1950s and the accusations of “guilt by association” that marked the period.

Lewis was twice interrupted by Jim Brown, producer of “Passing the Torch to America’s Youth,” who wanted reporters to focus on the film, which had been shown earlier. (An excellent account of the Selma confrontation that should appeal to history students.)

In a panel discussion that followed, Lewis received a standing ovation from the Spelman crowd for the remarks he made over the weekend.

Regardless of any criticism, which he characterized as overblown, Lewis said his Saturday protest had its effect.

“I think it checked some of the things that had been going on. I don’t think you’re going to see people making reference to a young man who is the nominee of his party as running around with terrorists. I don’t think you’re going to have that anymore,” Lewis said.

John Lewis has done more to ENCOURAGE racism than any Wallace ever did. Who is the real racist, John?

Maybe the guy that called Obama “That One”?

Maybe the gal calling Obama a Terrorist?

Maybe half the people on these talk backs that spread the rumor that Obama is a fascist and a secret socialist Muslim?

Maybe you are.

You can disagree with Obama without being a racist, but after what I’ve seen on here the last few days, if I had to bet money, I’d lay odds you ARE a racist if you repeat any Republican talking point.

Thank you Mr. Lewis for speaking up and making a very valid point. Hearing people at those political rallys shouting out “Kill Him”, “Traitor” and “Get The Terrorist” while seeing some of their facial expressions definitely brought back images of some of those 60’s civil rights marches where you see people standing on the sides shouting racial slurs at the marchers.

For all who have had an opportunity to participate in any type of spirited rally where the speakers pump up the crowd, you know that it doesn’t take much for those situations to get out of hand if there are a few extremist in the crowd.

That goes for the supporters from both political parties (eliminate the hate speech). It is the responsibility of the speakers at the podiums to rein in and keep control of the crowds. I am glad to see that John McCain has recently been doing just that. He just needs to tell his VP running mate that she needs to also do the same thing.

A little history lesson: The Republican Party freed the slaves, most Democrats opposed emancipation. The Republican Party opposed segregation and Southern Democrats violently supported it. LBJ passed the Civil Rights act with a majority of Republicans supporting it and a majority of Democrats opposing it. Yet African-Americans vote lock step with the Democrats and accuse the Republicans of racism. Makes absolutely no sense.

John Lewis’comments about John Mccain are right on point. McCain’s campaign is in disarray and doomed to failure when he picked Sara Palin as his running mate. Could you imagine her as President of the United States? McCain can only blame himself for the sad state of his campaign.

The Republicans freed the slaves, and then impeached the VP that Lincoln set up, and then set lots of rich, fat cat carpet baggers who skull f’d the South for all of the money it was worth….

Which is why they Democrats in the south until they passed civil rights laws.

Most Republicans opposed showing any mercy to the South, viewing them as traitors.

And those Democrats that opposed it were the ancestors of the same Southerner’s that are now Republicans today?

African Americans vote lockstep with Democrats because Democrats give them stuff.

Republicans call them ‘gutter scum’ and don’t think they should be able to to vote. Republicans are the old Democrats.

What irony or more evidence of our decline. Worst week for the stock market and we are about to elect Obama.

Hey clowns. Clayton County is the great experiment. A mostly black county and how much crap do you hear about from down there compared to say Forsite(sp). There is no evidence at all to suggest Obama will improve the US. To the contrary. we will only sink further.

Thanks Southern Ancestors.

Thanks Abe. I bet you are turning over in your grave at the sorry state of things.

Having lived in Clayton County, I can indeed agree that a sorrier excuse for local government has never been seen.

Except perhaps the Georgia State Legislature.

And I think Abe is probably weeping like he is on the monument, rather than turning over.

No evidence to suggest Obama will improve things?

We could have put that talking dog from I, Chijuajua in the White House 8 years ago and ended up in better shape than we are now.

And Republicans WANT MORE OF THE SAME.

A handful are ‘returning to their conservative roots’ but that doesn’t mean saying something is bad is bad; no, they still put Party first, party above all and repeat talking points without thought substance or depth.

And there are far too many who believe them.

Lewis made a career, built a life , out of playing the race card, what did you expect? The one trick pony has spoken. That’s all he’s got. But don’t go too far, because when Obama actually starts getting criticized for something, you will be needed by your people to cry “racist white devils.” Over and over. It ‘s worked for years.

By John Stuart Mill

October 15, 2008 3:22 AM | Link to this

John Lewis was getting the crap beat out because he was fighting for his rights, but he is a racist? Why because he calls situations out? They are many icons of the civil rights movement who are out of touch with today but John Lewis not one of them. How can John Lewis play a race card by bringing up his own memories of true events? How many times has he cried racist white devils? I guess people see one black man and group every other black man with him together. The problem with America is people are not judged on their individual merits or mistakes, but are grouped together. And unfortunately for African Americans, they are always grouped with minority of their race. Timesachangin, what the hell Barack Obama and those clowns in Clayton county have in common other than they are Black?

As for a history lesson, for many years after the Civil War the Republican Party did receive a majority of the African American votes (from those who were not disenfranchised). 100 years ago from today the parties ideologies were the exact opposite. The Republican was the more progressive party while the Democratic Party was the party of less federal government and less government regulation. Todays Republican Party is a far cry from the one Lincoln ran as.

It is amazing how people will open their mouths (keyboard) without having any knowledge of what they are saying. A person who goes by MidGaDoctor thinks that the Republican party that freed the slaves is the same one we are experiencing today? Several people who describe John Lewis as a racist who has made a career out of being one.
I am a 62 year old white man who will vote for Obama, due in large part to the Republican party’s total lack of character, absence of meaningful policy as it relates to the future of this country, and my belief that the Democratic party values every American, not just the “chosen few”. John Lewis has worked his entire life to make this a better country and his views are usually on target. His latest views are validated when you hear McCain’s supporters screaming “off with his head”, “terrorist”, etc. Thank you, John Lewis, for taking exception…shouldn’t we all?

John Lewis is nothing more than an instigator to create false images of the McCain/Palin ticket. His credibility is no more than that of the racist black panthers and the group ACORN, that’s illegally registered tens of thousand of black and low income, unedcuated voters to vote for Obama. This investigation is ongoing and LEWIS SUPPORTS THIS GROUP.

Obama was in fact palling around with terrorists. To say he wasn’t is disengenuous and misleading. Therefore, John Lewis has verifed he is racist by being one sided and making outlandish statements like he has made about McCain. How dare him!! Lewis is a nobody that can’t hardly talk, much less have substance to what he says.

People that support racist and unethical groups like ACORN, such as John Lewis have no place in our government. Vote out Lewis. Ask for a impeachment of his office. Demand a reputable individual represent us.

Blacks will NEVER be equal members of society until they can live what Dr. King dreamt about and consider others by the content of their character instead of the color of their skin!

Too bad John Lewis has spent a lifetime seeking equality that he will never find because he doesn’t understand this simple point. I pity you, John Lewis!

He spoke at this ACORN, along with *Deepak Bhargava with ACORN who lobbied Clinton for loosening up lending criteria on the Community Reinvestment Act and sued banks to make bad mortgage loans to low income people who could not afford them causing the housing crisis we now have, rally that said he was going to have ACORN meetings to shape his presidential campaign. *You won’t be shocked if you already know Obama who Obama really is but if not you will be irreverantly shocked at this Obama tie and endorsement of ACORN. http://boortz.com/more/video/obamaacornshape_agenda.html

John Lewis is probably a good man but one dumb congressman like many of the congressional black caucus members. A republican president signed the emancipation proclamation; set in motion a war(Civil) to free the slaves; freed the slaves; passed amendments to the constitution forbiding slavery; most blacks were republican until the 1960; Democrats started the KKK; Democrats passed Jim Crow laws; Republicans started the NAACP; Most Southern Democrat voted against the 1964 Civil rights acts and black joined this party in record numbers and the black family has went to H&lL every since.

Here is the voting record for the 1964 civil rights act

The original House version:

* Southern Democrats: 7-87 (7%-93%) * Southern Republicans: 0-10 (0%-100%) * Northern Democrats: 145-9 (94%-6%) * Northern Republicans: 138-24 (85%-15

And John Lewis wants people to take him seriously.

He does it on the floor of the House if lunch is discussed. How he keeps getting elected is beyond me. I suppose by the rest of the black racists. Wallace was a Democrat but don’t confuse the issue Mr. Lewis raised with the facts! In fact, if you are critical of Obama, you are a racist, plain and simple! The facts only get in the way of that conclusion too!

Had Hillary been the nominee, any criticism of her would have been labled ‘sexist’ regardless of the content.

Again, blacks will never achieve equality until they grow up enough to live by the same rules they wish to impose on everyone else in society. Ain’t happening!

JESSE JACKSON: Under Obama ‘decades of putting Israel’s interests first’ would end…

PREPARE for a new America: That’s the message that the Rev. Jesse Jackson conveyed to participants in the first World Policy Forum, held at this French lakeside resort last week.

He promised “fundamental changes” in US foreign policy - saying America must “heal wounds” it has caused to other nations, revive its alliances and apologize for the “arrogance of the Bush administration.”

The most important change would occur in the Middle East, where “decades of putting Israel’s interests first” would end.

Jackson believes that, although “Zionists who have controlled American policy for decades” remain strong, they’ll lose a great deal of their clout when Barack Obama enters the White House.

“Obama is about change,” Jackson told me in a wide-ranging conversation. “And the change that Obama promises is not limited to what we do in America itself. It is a change of the way America looks at the world and its place in it.”

Jackson warns that he isn’t an Obama confidant or adviser, “just a supporter.” But he adds that Obama has been “a neighbor or, better still, a member of the family.” Jackson’s son has been a close friend of Obama for years, and Jackson’s daughter went to school with Obama’s wife Michelle.

“We helped him start his career,” says Jackson. “And then we were always there to help him move ahead. He is the continuation of our struggle for justice not only for the black people but also for all those who have been wronged.”

Will Obama’s election close the chapter of black grievances linked to memories of slavery? The reverend takes a deep breath and waits a long time before responding.

“No, that chapter won’t be closed,” he says. “However, Obama’s victory will be a huge step in the direction we have wanted America to take for decades.”

Jackson rejects any suggestion that Obama was influenced by Marxist ideas in his youth. “I see no evidence of that,” he says. “Obama’s thirst for justice and equality is rooted in his black culture.”

But is Obama - who’s not a descendant of slaves - truly a typical American black?

Jackson emphatically answers yes: “You don’t need to be a descendant of slaves to experience the oppression, the suffocating injustice and the ugly racism that exists in our society,” he says. “Obama experienced the same environment as all American blacks did. It was nonsense to suggest that he was somehow not black enough to feel the pain.”

Is Jackson worried about the “Bradley effect” - that people may be telling pollsters they favor the black candidate, but won’t end up voting for him?

“I don’t think this is how things will turn out,” he says. “We have a collapsing economy and a war that we have lost in Iraq. In Afghanistan, we face a resurgent Taliban. New threats are looming in Pakistan. Our liberties have been trampled under feet … Today, most Americans want change, and know that only Barack can deliver what they want. Young Americans are especially determined to make sure that Obama wins.”

He sees a broad public loss of confidence in the nation’s institutions: “We have lost confidence in our president, our Congress, our banking system, our Wall Street and our legal system to protect our individual freedoms… I don’t see how we could regain confidence in all those institutions without a radical change of direction.”

Jackson declines to be more concrete about possible policy changes. After all, he insists, he isn’t part of Obama’s policy team. Yet he clearly hopes that his views, reflecting the position of many Democrats, would be reflected in the policies of an Obama administration.

On the economic front, he hopes for “major changes in our trading policy.”

“We cannot continue with the open-door policy,” he says. “We need to protect our manufacturing industry against unfair competition that destroys American jobs and creates ill-paid jobs abroad.”

Would that mean an abrogation of the NAFTA treaty with Canada and Mexico?

Jackson dismisses the question as “premature”: “We could do a great deal without such dramatic action.”

His most surprising position concerns Iraq. He passionately denounces the toppling of Saddam Hussein as “an illegal and unjust act.” But he’s now sure that the United States “will have to remain in Iraq for a very long time.”

What of Obama’s promise to withdraw by 2010? Jackson believes that position will have to evolve, reflecting “realities on the ground.”

“We should work with our allies in Iraq to consolidate democratic institutions there,” he says. “We must help the people of Iraq decide and shape their future in accordance with their own culture and faith.”

On Iran, he strongly supports Obama’s idea of opening a direct dialogue with the leadership in Tehran. “We’ve got to talk to tell them what we want and hear what they want,” Jackson says. “Nothing is gained by not talking to others.”

Would that mean ignoring the four UN Security Council resolutions that demand an end to Iran’s uranium-enrichment program? Jackson says direct talks wouldn’t start without preparations.

“Barack wants an aggressive and dynamic diplomacy,” he says. “He also wants adequate preparatory work. We must enter the talks after the ground has been prepared,” he says.

Jackson is especially critical of President Bush’s approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

“Bush was so afraid of a snafu and of upsetting Israel that he gave the whole thing a miss,” Jackson says. “Barack will change that,” because, as long as the Palestinians haven’t seen justice, the Middle East will “remain a source of danger to us all.”

“Barack is determined to repair our relations with the world of Islam and Muslims,” Jackson says. “Thanks to his background and ecumenical approach, he knows how Muslims feel while remaining committed to his own faith.”

Aaron Burr v. Mexico is an idiot. A far left loony, Koolaid-drinking idiot. Let’s not forget the attack ad in Nov. 2006, signed onto by John Lewis, Shirley Franklin, and Andrew Young, that said if a black man doesn’t win Fulton County Commissioner, then we’ll return to the Jim Crow days of fire hoses and attack dogs. If any Repub said anything like that (and what has been said doesn’t come close) they would lose their jobs. Democrats=racebaiters.

Let’s not forget that the civil rights activists of the 60s were trying to fix a social inequality that had been present in this country for around two centuries. The gains that we have made in the last few decades are only a start, a step toward the dream shared by MLK Jr. Some of the venom shown in the posts above show how much farther we still have to go.

Although John Lewis makes headlines with his statements and attracts attention to the problem, a more positive method should be adopted. You can’t mend a rift with those types of inflammatory comments. I applaud him for his continued efforts to bring equality to all Americans but I condemn him for the divisive method he uses.

Keep in mind people that the most vocal member does not necessarily represent the thoughts or ideals of any group.

John Lewis is “as great” or probably a “greater” American hero than McCain. McCain didn’t leave the carrier expecting to be shot down while Lewis knew he would not go to Selma and return unharmed. I keep waiting for the media to do a bit of history reporting, like John Lewis, I see a lot to compare with the Wallace days. Would you (or somebody) go back to the beginning of the Republican Party in GA? It begins with Julian Bond and the Democratic Convention Credentials Committee (hint). The “un-seated” delagation returned home and started the Ga Republican Party. Now the Republican Secretary of State is refusing to process voter registrations under the banner of voter fraud. Here is award winning journalism awaiting a taker! Not a lot has changed since the Wallace days, just the name of the racist party.

Racism-The scapegoat for black people. It’s always racist this and racist that, but you never turn the tables and look at it in reverse.

If McCain had ties to Ayers (TERRORIST NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOK AT IT), if McCain sat in a church that preached hating blacks and America, if McCain consorted with CONVICTED FELON Tony Rezko, all Democrats would be hollering the same thing us Republicans are. Oh, and remember, there are black republicans as well, are they racist, too??

Blacks need to stop segregating themselves, and by that i mean: Stop using the N word in YOUR talk, in YOUR songs (cuz they aint in mine!). Stop teaching YOUR children that whites are the problem, and start doing things for YOURselves instead of believeing you deserve something for nothing! There are some blacks who have done that-worked their butts off for their living, but the large majority of you have not!

you need to quit viewing yourself as black, and start viewing yourselves as AMERICANS!! Not African Americans because 90% of you WERE NOT born in Africa. If you are proud of that heritage, move there and see how you like life!

As AMERICANS we can overcome this, but since you blacks want to remain black and NOT AMERICAN, you’re part of the problem!

MidGADoctor, a little history lesson: When Ronald Wilson Reagan announced his candidacy for president he did it in Philadelphia, MS while invoking “states rights.” Philadelphia, MS is where three young men(two white one black)took a stand against racial and social injustice(Jim Crow)to try and make this country a better place for all Americans lost their lives at the hands of bigots. “States Rights” was the same nantra being espoused by bigots during the struggle for consitutional guarantees during the turbulent sixties. Today’s Republican party in the south is a throwback to the old now defunct Dixiecrat party. Instead of using race they now use religion. Mr. Lincoln would be embarrassed at some of the actions of the new Republican party. In addition, Mr. Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was an overture to border states so that they would not leave the union. When Mr. Lincoln was elected slaves started leaving the plantations in droves. In essence, most of them freed themselves. The thirteenth amendment was the legal codification that officially freed the slaves. Have a nice day.

God bless John Lewis, but he is a symbol of all that is wrong with politics. More focused on partisanship than solutions, like so many in Washington he has lost touch with reality. He is Congressman-For-Life, because without term limits, his district will continue to re-elect him until he dies at his desk from old age.

Wake up, folks. One of the main reasons our nation is in trouble is that we have handed the keys to the kingdom to a bunch of complacent career politicians (NOT leaders) who are completely focused on keeping their powerful, perk-ridden jobs, NOT on doing what is best for America.

Throw ‘em all out! Exercise your power at the ballot box and shake things up. Until we can bring in a bunch that will enact universal term limits, it’s up to US to do it for them.

Please explain how someone with a white mother, raised in a white community cannot be accepted by all people. Obama has more connections with the white community. We are moving to a multicultural society. All of us have relatives through the generations that come from every nation. This is the reality! Therefore, this campaign and this election must be about the issues. Obama can relate to most Americans and he is in touch with the issues and the average American. That is the key. We need to move this country to being respected amongst the world leaders and right now, that is not what we have. We cannot live in hatred and that is what has been espoused for the last seven and a half years, this must change. Who do we think we are, that we can go into another country and tell pepole what to do. We have to work together. NOONE would ever think that a neighbor could come into their homes to dictate policy. Therefore, we need a president who is not ANGRY, HOSTILE, and who can reach across the aisle. Goodness, if McCain dies in the next four years (very likely, considering his age), then Palin would be president. Shudder the thought.

Realist, I’ll gladly explain for you:

I cannot accept Obama, not because of his skin color, but because of his non-American background. Yes, he’s half white, but to hear the media and black majority-he’ll be the first black president? You’ve never hear anyone call him ‘the first half-white’ president, have you? So who wants to consider him the first black-Blacks, and that’s what started the race wars. Gaurantee you that if he loses the election by some miracle, it’ll be racist@ Just mark my words now.

Back to the issue-Obama wants to spend spend spend, when we’re in the worst hole ever! He’s spent millions of our money on pork-barrel projects that help no one! Yeah, Palin started the Bridge, then cancelled it and spent the money she received on the state infastructure (which was only half the money). The GOVT voted to give the other half to Katrina victims, but Obama voted against that.

You tell your kids that they are who they associate with in school, is it any different when you’re not in school? No, it’s not-and Obama associates with terrorits, racists, and felons. It’s that simple.

People added their laughter, but today,,,, nobody gives a second thought to Vietnam and few even knows what it was,,, but the Middle East rages with seathing hatred and threats which effects the U.S. much more the simple little economy. MidGADoctor said he was giving us a history lesson: Republicans freed the slaves. Does that mean they are not racist? Here’s a history lesson, a direct quote from Abraham Lincoln: “I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything.”

Republicans nor Democrats freed the Black slaves or gave the Black man civil rights in this country! God, the just Judge freed the Black man from White racists bigotry by using a Black man named Martin Luther King to lead a radical people who were tired of the deplorable treatment and to bring attention to the unjust federal government of America!!!

Under JFK’s presidential administration, the initiatives for the civil right’s bill were already set in place due to JFK and Martin growing relationship. The BIGOTS/WHITE RACISTS of their day decided to teach JFK a lesson for showing the Blacks too much respect. THE LESSON WAS A FATAL ASSASIN’S BULLET!!

Even in the face of DEATH, Martin and the people stay the course for equality in the justice system.

Lyndon B. Johnson was wise enough to follow through on JFK’S initiatives by signing the civil rights bill. Had he not signed it this country wouldn’t exist today!!

Because NO MAN in his right mind will ever be held down to RACISM!! No people, no matter what race or color being in their right mind will ever tolerate slavery or injustice for life!!

Again I say to YOU, THAT NO POLITICAL PARTY FREED THE BLACK MAN FROM SLAVERY OR GAVE THE BLACK MAN EQUAL RIGHTS IN THIS COUNTRY!!! IT IS GOD WHO BRINGS JUSTICE!!!

So You might as well get off your high horse and learn to live among all people of different nationalities, different cultures, and different customs!!!!

This is the problem with America never wants to talk about race. Some people in America say things do things hurt people make statements and it’s never true. Yes Senator Mccain and Governor Palin are saying that that leave a code message or directly hate. Well get use to it you will have a President Barrack Hussein Obama whether you like or not and if you don’t like I hope all the people who say they are leaving America please do take your hate and get to stepping. Anyone who believes that George W. Bush is a good president is a moron.

That is a true statement. It is certainly true to me.

John McCain has only just begun to say George W. Bush is a moron.

Sarah Palin thinks George Bush is awesome.

Republicans want to pretend like the last 8 years didn’t happen, except for the last 2 years where Democrats had a slim majority in congress, and thus everything that is going wrong is their fault.

Racism must be exposed for what it is and southerners cannot be allowed to slither under the rocks they have been hiding under unanswered. They helped elect Bush in 2000 and 2004.

Not all southerners are racist, but the ones that have been commenting on here sure are.

It’s sad that after all these years, America hasn’t changed one bit. Now I see why other countries think all of us “black and white” are so dumb and stupid. You have blacks that are still expecting something out of slavery. Those slave masters are long gone and dead in the grave. But on the other hand, you have some whites who for some reason, still think they are superior to blacks and that black people are beneath them. And that my friend is racism. That’s what black people have a problem with. And don’t act like it don’t exist, because there are plenty of white people who will only promote other whites or refuse to live in the same neighborhood of a black person because of the color of their skin. Wake up white people. Blacks are just as educated and making the same money that you thought you were gonna keep them from making. If you think you race is superior to blacks, regardless of whether you act or say anything about the subject, you indeed are racist because God created all of us equal and no race is greater than the other.

And God help us for the kids that are being told by their parents that they are better. It only keeps the race cycle going. And its not the younger generation, its the older than 50 crowd (black and white) who need to grow the phuck up!

Now, just b/c you disagree with the opinion of a black person, that does not make you a racist and shouldn’t be considered one. But when you result to such things as, “blacks are thugs”, yes you are racist because you are saying you look down on the black race as a whole and think less of them because of the color of their skin.

Just reading the rantings of the simple minded, right wing nuts who spout the Republican talking points proves the point that Mr. Lewis was trying to make. Since they can’t inspire their base with a sound plan to address the many issues that face our country and refuse the discuss the issues, they resort to creating a mob mentality through inuendo and blatant lies.

What a shame that instead of having the decency to run a campaign on the issues and encouraging the country to vote on what they believe is the best course of action for the future, McCain has resorted to the same negative tactics used against him by the bush campaign.

Mr. Lewis nailed it and has no reason to apologize for telling the truth. The tactics McCain is using are the same that both Wallace and McCarthy used.

It is absolutely rediculous that people have made this out to be a black v. white issue. The true way to view this is to look at policy, not race. George Washington warned government officials in his retirement speech about factions and sectionalism in the United States. It is absoultely amazing how true everything he said was. Today we have such a large division in the United States that it is almost impossible to get anything in government done. When the founding fathers wrote our constitution they had to put differences aside, and do what was best for the country. Today it is all about the party, on both sides.

No, I do not think John McCain is a racist. Do I think Obama has some skeletons in his closet? Yes, but who doesn’t. Is the United States in need of change? Yes, but only if people can come together to make those decisions.

I have trule lost all respect for John Lewis. He continues to to drive a racial wedge in this country that many have worked so hard to remove. It is 2008, we have a black presidential candidate who has a real shot at winning, we had a woman candidate who was a real contender and have made huge strides toward bringing white and black together for a stronger more prosperous country. If there had be a white official making remarks such as John Lewis, he would have already been removed from office. It is not the 1800’s or the 1960’s. It is time to put all of this behind us and move forward rather than constantly looking at the past.

Mr. Lewis had the right to make the statement which was not about racism, but about an atmosphere of that gave way to hate speech and violent language which could in fact give way in the form of lynch mob actions.

Acceptible yellings of “Kill Him”, “Bomb Him”, etc. ring loud in the minds of anyone who has lived though the Civil Rights Movement. And, that is what Mr Lewis was speaking on when he said that McCain/Palin were not the ones making the remarks but laying the breeding ground for the actions.

Anyone in their right mind knows that a man who has every reason to hate White people, but does not is not a racist.

It often amazes me that when Al Sharpton, Jesses Jackson, etc, etc speak for African Americans people call them racist. The short of it is, they speak for people who’s rights are in jeopardy and although not perfect, and they admit that, they still stand for people who SUPPOSEDLY have rights in America. If you Americans who have not faced racism walked a day in the shoes of someone who has, you would stand up or want someone to stand up for you too. Yeah I know, yo are going to yell, “What about reverse racism” - Yeah you face reverse racism once in awhile for a short time and you hate it so, imagine facing it for a lifetime. “I’m sure you can’t because America is always good to some and not so great to others. We live in a RACIST society, bottom line. If we didn’t there would be no reason for a Civil rights movement. Sure a bill was passed and there is still inequalities in America so, that is what Al, Jesse and others stand for and if you don’t like it then, maybe it is because you are a RACIST!!!!

You use steroids for agility, speed and strength - we had them at birth.

The use of the term “race card” is an attempt to trivialize the issue of race in this country and make people confortable in not taking ownership of it. It places the responsibility of the issue solely in the laps of the minority and takes the majority of the hook. Until everyone in this country takes a good hard look at themselves and how they relate to others, we will continue to have have those that remain in darkness.

I am considering my children and grandchildren, Bush Leg Humper, and I think I’ll choose the future over the crap Drudge pulls out of his rear end for you to spout.

Pinkie:

But wait….I thought you were going away? :) Doesn’t that make you a flip flopper?

I have NEVER said all racists are white. I lived in another country for a while and learned that everyone on the planet are racist. But southerners are MORE racist culturally speaking than anyone I know of except maybe the Japanese.

I do follow ‘the God’s example’….Jesus Christ took a whip and cleansed the temple of the wicked.

I use ‘personal attacks’ and policy. But it is hard to argue policy with people who accept as gospel facts made up out of thin air.

If you REALLY cared about policy, you WOULDN’T be voting for John McCain, its that simple. You believe made up facts, figures and lies.

I can cite all kinds of facts, but you’ll ignore them and counter them with crap facts pulled out of Drudge’s rear end.

if you aren’t liberal, you must be some kind of racist, right? After all, there’s no other reason why anyone would not vote for Obama, correct? So let me get this straight. With apologies to Jeff Foxworthy: If you don’t want higher taxes, you might be a racist. If you think we should drill for more domestic oil, you could be a racist. If you believe we should secure the borders, you might be a racist. If you believe in the right to keep and bear arms, then you might be a racist. If you belive in the sanctity of life , you might be a racist. If you belive in winning the war on terror, you just might be a racist. Heck, if you don’t vote for Obama, you must be a racist. I, for one, am tired of this old routine. Let me be very clear: The problems with Obama have nothing to do with the color of his skin. Rather, it has to do with positions, beliefs and associations and the lack of any substantial experience that would qualify him to be president. excerpted from Ross Balano-

This is what Jackson, Sharpton, Wright & obama-now- propose to KEEP doing. It makes the poorer people, MORE dependent on them because the poor mistakenly believe that these “leaders” are “helping” them. My 2 Cents is absolutely right.

Black corruption in politics is by far the rule. Even in Africa, blacks cannot survive without having a strongman dictator, monarch, or king rule over them. Exceptions to this rule are rare. In addition, those societies don’t advance or innovate and the standards of living are poor compared to the U.S.

Fair-minded people recognize that Obama is corrupt. We must judge him on his associations, his words, and his deeds. The trouble is that voting “present” doesn’t convey much about the man—except that he is afraid to take a stand. The old expression “birds of a feather flock together” is as valid now as it has ever been.

I would vote (and have voted) for a black man. But I cannot vote for an unethical man or woman—regardless of their color or party.

Unfortunately blacks are voting for Obama because he is black, yet many of these same people don’t want to be judged by their skin color.

What America is learning is that there is usually very little difference between a black person’s color and a black person’s character.

You folks are not helping yourselves and you are certainly not helping America. I only wish that you exercised the responsibility that should accompany freedom.

* Aaron Burr VS Mexico *

A little History lesson; obviously you idolize flawed individuals, Though Burr was a formative leader of the Reuplican-Democratic Party (Yes , people they were together once) and a promising politician, his killing of Alexander Hamilton led to the Federalist Party failing, and his downward spiral; (Kinda like your posts!) After Burr left the Vice Presidency at the end of his term in 1805, he journeyed into what was then the U.S. West, particularly the Ohio River Valley area and the lands acquired in the Louisiana Purchase. While historians are uncertain as to Burr’s particular activities, he was accused in turns of having committed treason, of a conspiracy to steal Louisiana Purchase lands away from the United States and crown himself a King or Emperor, or of an attempt to declare an illegal war against Spanish possessions in Mexico. He did go so far as to form his own regiment of at least 200 men. Burr was arrested in 1807 and brought to trial on charges of treason, for which he was acquitted. After several years in self-imposed exile in Europe, Burr returned to practicing law in New York City and lived a largely reclusive existence until his death.

John Lewis back stabbed Hillary Clinton for race. Every honest person on both sides of the aisle knows that blacks are the most racially biased group in America and that’s why they voted 90%+ for Obama. It wasn’t because they know their political issues better and did their homework, they simply voted for Obama because he is black. Yet in discussing issue’s, Obama sure fails to make any mention of black issues when he talks about quarter million dollar households and wall street fiascos!

As a black female who respects John Lewis for what he stood for during the civil rights, I don’t support his recent comments. I know that racism still exists but everytime something jumps off in the Obama camp is always racist. The card is being overused and is turning people off. Not just white folks but blacks.

John Lewis is a dolt and he should retire. He is nothing but a racist and the last comment he made like this was if Fulton County elected a commissioner who was a republican, it would be akin to electing someone like George Wallace, and he had to go and apologize. Maybe he gets his kicks off of stirring it up, but I am not amused and many others are sick of it and him as well. Go on and get out of public service.

I wholeheartedly agree with U.S. Rep John Lewis. we cry foul over words that are not imporant. I cannot believe that President George Bush will be allowed to leave the highest office in These United States after eight years, and simply walk away without being challenged on one of the biggest Lies ever told by someone in his position as our President. Weapons of Mass Destructuion. Yet, somehow we can find time to talk about what U.S.Rep John Lewis said about the garbage being sprouted and thrown around by Senator Mccain and Gov S. Palin on the campaign trail.. We are truly a melting pot of mixed up and confused idiots. I am waiting on someone to stand up and ask where are those WEAPONS? When do we as ordinary citizens begin to use our brain not our emotions. I say Hate is Hate no matter how you smell it. To go to WAR was just plain HATE. To put our children (young adults) and adults alike in HARMS WAY by means of Death, loss of Dignity and Mind and the loss of Arms, Legs, Hands and Feet for more than three years, and a WAR that NO we will not WIN, it is just simply IGNORANT. We the citizens go on with our lives everyday as if nothing happened. U.S.Rep John Lewis what he felt to be TRUE. To see those people in that crowd chant and yell out so much hate it is disgraceful. Who could be more TERRIOSTS then we were to sit back and allow the things that happened at the beginning of this ignorant WAR. I remember those CARDS, MONOPOLY GAMES, and the MILLIONS of DOLLARS IN BOUNTY MONEY TOO. I am like an ELEPHANT and NO I want be forgetting all the terrible things that this Administration did to start a WAR that was completley OUT of CONTROL. U.S. Rep John lewis was right and I might say foe me he ROCKS! Do not ever be ashamed to say what is absolutely the TRUTH. “TRUTH TO POWER” will always prevail. Joyce Watts Pensacola, FL

To Dan Deacon; thanks for the link to Congressman Lewis’ site. And he has earned the right to have and express his opinions on this subject due most expecially to being in the trenches in the 60’s and 70’s peacefully standing up for his and other people’s rights.

I and my friends have been saying WE were concerned about the tone the McCain campaign has taken of late and were fearful someone wack job would try to physically harm Barack as a result, so Congressman was right on the mark. And thanks to you, I’ve now written and told him so as I’m sure many of my friends will. :)

Here’s the real deal.Forget all the racist comments, hateful blogging. We`are all disgusted as american’s with what has happenned to our country…the economy, gas prices, job losses, the black crime rate, the black out of wedlock birth rate,on and on and on.call me a racist too,if you like. Conservatives want to vote for someone reguardless of their race based on them being qualified. We have accepted Colin Powell,Clarence Thomas,Codaleeza Rice and many other qualified black political figures. What we do not accept is someone who is not qualified or will not answer questions responsibly. We are teffified because of what we don’t know.

Blacks clearly have different values than whites. They have a different agenda when it comes to diet, lifestyle, family values and responsible parenting. There is a significant proportion of blacks whom if given power will totally abuse it,cause massive confusion, corruption. There is also a significant proportion that will not work or comply as law abiding citizens.Statistics at top government institutes and universities support thsi statement as fact.

We are terrified, especially at this point, what will happen to this country, our society, the ecoonomy if Obama is elected.

Show me one example of any form of government in this country or any other part of the world that is under black leadership that is flourishing ? In America, whites will hand over top dollar to see a black man carry a football, dunk a basketball.fight for the heavyweight boxing title. However, until the black community cleans up their act, reduces the disprortionate statistics in my first paragraph, conservatives are not ready for Obama. Neither should anyone, reguardless of race ,be ready to have him lead us out of this mess.

It is unfortunate that Mr. Lewis’s comments were so accurate. I saw excerpts from one of the rallies that Mr. McCain held and the shouts of “kill him” were plainly audible. It reminded me of a lynching environment.

Those who accuse Mr. Lewis of playing the race card simply have absorbed one of the key tactics of Karl Rove, accuse the opposition of your own crimes before they can accuse you.

Mr. Lewis does not hate whites, not even those to whom he was referring, but he does hate and we all should hate the sentiments that were expressed at those rallies. Hopefully, the people who expressed them were just caught up in the moment and will resolve not to say such hateful things again. But the reality is that racism is behind some of sentiment. There are many white people who are plainly afraid of a black man being president.

As for Palin, she was a key rabble-rouser at the rallies. Her background of abusing her powers as governor and her flirting with the Alaska secessionist party are reason enough to vote against her. I don’t need to hate her too.

It is wrong for the Republicans to bring up Obama’s associations. Obama had to go to an America hating church, and Obama was forced to be friends with a terrorist. Palin is a racist because she is a white Republican. All republicans are racist. Any woman that is a republican should have her ovaries cut out or be forced to have an abortion. It would be very interesting to know nonetheless, but it is a shame that in my dealings with the Obama campaign, I would not be surprised if supporters were intentionally making these anonymous comments (though I doubt the actual campaign chair or Obama have made such a directive). I met John Lewis this spring at the Sweet Water Beer Festival and we shared our different views on why he would change his super delegate vote from Hillary Clinton to Obama. I for one have respected John Lewis, for him to lower himself to that level and use that kind of rhetoric about John McCain is certainly very distasteful and plain wrong. Obama is not a good guy, I believe he has hidden agenda judging by the friends he has had in the past… Need I say more!!!! In all fairness, I cannot blame John Lewis for his comments. He was there in Selma and he saw things that many of us, black or white, cannot begin to comprehend. I am certain that every once in awhile he still sees and hears flashes of what those days were like. In reality, there is still a ton of unbridled racial hatred and bigotry in this country. You cannot bury bigotry until it is dead. It will only dig its way back to the surface and poison us all again. The best way to destroy it is to refuse to give in to it. If someone uses a racial slur, we should all admonish that person. The only way to win is to hate the hatred, but love the haters.

That said, the only thing that concerns me about Obama are his politics of redistribution. We must allow our citizens to enjoy the fruits of their labors and we must incent hard work and entreprenurial risk. “Trickle down” economics works! It was Reagan’s tax cuts that saved our country from the economic devastation of the 70’s and paved the way for the wealth we enjoyed during the 80’s and 90’s. Instead of raising taxes, we should be thinking about pulling troops out of Iraq and using some of that money here at home. So I suppose you could say that Obama has it half right. Perhaps he will learn this after he takes office (which in my mind is a near certainty). If Obama does take office, then I , a McCain supporter, will support Obama 100%.

To all the decent white Americans, do you see what we as black people have to go through daily. Not just on this blog but in life every single day. So far today, on this blog alone, I have learned that me as a black woman

Don’t have the same values as whites in regard to raising my son

I’m a thug

My son is a thug

I hate America

I am teaching my son to hate America

I am a baby momma, even though I have a husband

I am lazy

I am uneducated

I’m a nigg*r

I’m a monkey

I don’t have a right to vote democrat b/c the candidate is black even tho’ I have voted democrat all my life

My diet is poor

My lifestyle is poor

I have a different agenda in life than white people.

If I get in a higher position, I will mess that up too!

and, whites have “accepted” Colin Powell,Clarence Thomas,Codaleeza Rice and many other qualified black political figures.

It’s people like John Lewis and his irk that will continue to seperate the white community from the black community. The man just won’t quit with his racist comments/innuendos. C’mon John the marching days are over, firehoses all put away, dogs are penned. You and your compatriots accomplished the mission, now let it go. There is one race-the human race and the sooner you realize that the sooner the races will be able to come together !!!

C’mon John the marching days are over, firehoses all put away, dogs are penned. You and your compatriots accomplished the mission, now let it go. There is one race-the human race and the sooner you realize that the sooner the races will be able to come together !!!

I think John Lewis was right on point. If you take for example a person who attends World Changers Church where Pastor Dollar is located in College Park. The members of that church believe every word that comes out of his mouth. They will go to war for their pastor. Not to say that Pastor Dollar is wrong but the influence he has over his members is really no different then the influence John Mccain has over the folks shouting “Kill Him”. One must be very careful when dealing with small minded people who have evil and hate being their foundation. They only see color. No matter what is offered or said all they see is color. Remember the TV show The Jefferson? When Geoge save the life of a KKK man. When the man came through and found out a black man had saved his life, he said ” You should have let me die.” We as American have come to far to allow race to be and issue. We all need each other. When I go to London, China, Jamaica, Canada, ect.. I’m not a black women. I’m an American. And yes I’m proud to be and American because at least I know I’m free.

So, McCain is focusing on actual relationships Obama has with questionable people, while the Democrats use phrases like “Republican blow-up doll” to describe Palin…but it is the Republicans who are making toxic statements? Please. Take any MSM story and switch the party references and Democrats would be going insane over “attacks”. It is a one-way street. McCain has to go negative because he doesn’t have the MSM doing his dirty work for him. God help us all when the Marxists take over.

What is wrong with this country. If you want to see change let Obama get in there. We will be in trouble. Black people are voting for Obama because he is black. Really he’s not he’s mixed. John Lewis accomplished just what he wanted to, he got people angry against McCain and Palin. This is unfortunate, but it is the way the whole campaign is run. If you look at how terrorists operate, you will see the same method working in the Obama campaign. David Axelrod and Obama were close in Chicago, and have succeeded in bringing the Saul Alinsky, Acorn(obama taught both Saul Alinsky and Acorn tactics in Chicago)down and dirty Chicago politics front and center. Just wait if he gets in you all better hide your guns, take all of your money out of the banks, 401K’s and where ever you have it, because you will probably get it taken from you and given to welfare. Also if you speak out citing the 1st ammendment, you will not doubt end up in jail after being beaten up. Sinister things are happening in the United States and we are not allowed to talk about it.

Ok, John Lewis is correct. When you are running a campaign there should be an ounce of decorum, and when people talk about killing another AMERICAN, and you say nothing- what does that say about you and what you claim to represent? Only in America do we look at people as black, white, red, yellow. If you are from South Africa, you are a South African- not a black or white. This racial system was designed by those in power to maintain power.
If people who hate the Black candidate Barack Obama, look at his other side and his upbringing. I am voting based on the platform- not race. If McMain had not become McNasty, I would have thought more of him. The best thing we can all do is VOTE VOTE VOTE. John Lewis knows of what he speaks, and I guess he must have been correct in his analysis, as the venomous rhetoric has decreased in the last few days. Hit dog will holla.

So William Ayers is NOT a socialist or communist.

Rev. Wright is NOT a racist.

ACORN IS just a community organization trying to get folks to the polls.

BUT McCain IS a racist for using that horrible slur “that one” when refering to Barack Obama (who is not racist, socialist, or in any way involved with ACORN).

OK, I understand now and won’t question any further comments from Obama supporters. It would probably be a “hate crime” to do so. Better yield to the intimidation like all those folks in Washington, D.C.

I listened to a “regular” respected Minister today, and was very interested, because I wonder where we fit in, in end times. He talked about the fact that America is not mentioned in the Bible, so the question is what are we to interpret as our place? I’m speaking about Armageddon. He did not try to say that he knew the answer, but instead cited what is happening in our United States, how we are becoming complacent, greedy, and certainly not like we used to be. He did not need to say much to me because I am 71 years old, and I remember well when you word, told the story of your character. How people lived within their means, and knew where their blessings came from. Look at what we have become, we have no respect for life, so what else can we respect? If human life is not respected, what is? Should we respect our possessions above life? Vulgar language used in the blogs, show the writers have no respect for themselves. We reward bad and mock good. Innocent people are mistreated verbally and physically and people cheer this behavior! I’m not sure but, if as I believe, the calendar ends in 2013, perhaps we need to be examining our lives, if we care. I really felt compelled to bring this up, perhaps, just perhaps it will make some people realize just what is important.

I do expect to be ridiculed and verbally mistreated, for speaking the truth and revealing what I feel.

Why should he apologize? The media sure will not put his feet to the fire! Black liberal democrats can say WHATEVER they want with no fear of retribution. Look at Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. A bunch of race pimps that have never had a real job in their lives. They will not say it, so I will. I am sick and tired of these low life “community black leaders” speaking out against whites and Republicans. We are sick and tired of listening to your racist ramblings! Remember, the libs and the lame stream media based their accusations on the polls that came out BEFORE the election that showed Gore up 10 + points, and said the Republicans had to steal it because the polls were correct, and there was no way someone could make up that many points in 24 hours. How are the democrats going to throw out the racism charges when Obama is married to a racist? Look up her thesis…oh…wait…you can’t do that anymore because it was removed from the public view (can you say guilty as charged). How are the democrats going to throw out the racism charges when Obama has followed a racist, America hating minister for 20 years? How are the democrats going to throw out the racism charges when Obama is being endorsed by noted racists like Farakahn and Jesse Jackson? It’s because you can only be a racist if you’re white.

I’m voting for OBAMA because he will make Jessie Jackson Sec. of State.

Jesse Jackson has lashed out at Post columnist Amir Taheri for having the temerity to take note of some Jackson predictions on how a President Barack Obama would approach the Middle East.

The “Zionists who have controlled American policy for decades” remain strong, Jackson told Taheri at the World Policy Forum in France, but the “decades of putting Israel’s interests first” would end during an Obama presidency.

Not surprisingly, those words had Obama’s aides quickly running for cover.

A spokesman stressed that Jackson is “not an adviser to the Obama campaign and is therefore in no position to interpret or share Barack Obama’s views on Israel and foreign policy.”

As for Jackson himself, he accused our colleague of trying “to incite fear and division” and of “selectively imposing his own point of view and distorting mine.”

But he didn’t actually deny saying what Taheri said he said.

And, Jackson’s protests notwithstanding, there’s really no alternate interpretation to a charge that “Zionists … have controlled American policy for decades.”

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo John Lewis. Me thinks that McCain protest too much> He has fed an environment of hatred and racism because he does not have any real new ideas. His attacks on Obama remind me of the guys who used to shoot their bullets at Superman and then when that doesn’t work they throw the gun at him. McCain has run his old woreout programs at Obama and since those haven’t work the only thing he has left in his holster is to try to discredit the man and play on racists notion of patriotism and race. I am glad some had the stones to tell the truth.

Who you asociate with says a lot about who YOU are. As we tell our children “If you want to know where your heading in life look at your friends”. Too many blacks, in and out of politics, John Lewis, Jeremiah Wright, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Maxine Waters, etc… get away with claiming that whites are the only racists in America because only whites have power in and out of politics. But how is it we can all agree that the Ku Klux Klan is a racist organization although, aside from Robert Byrd(D)”that D means DEMOCRAT”, no Klan member has been elected to a high public office? And how is it that, in this racist America, there are black congressmen, governors, mayors, police chiefs and even a black United States senator running for PRESIDENT?

The only racists I see are the Democrats. They are the ones saying if you don’t vote for Obama you are a racists. They are the one that keep coming up with programs so minorities don’t have to work. They are the ones that keep saying that we need to redistribute wealth to keep the minorities beholding to us. Funny, as a professional businessman, all the successful minorities I am friends with, including my son-in-law, vote Republican because of the mindset of the womb to tomb Democrats. Only losers who are lazy vote Democrat. I used to be one until I worked my way through college and became a success and saw the Dems for what they really are.
