Handel on the voter registration lawsuit
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
See the full AJC story here, but this is building fast:
Voting rights groups on Thursday sued Secretary of State Karen Handel on behalf of a Cherokee County man who they said has been the victim of a methodical effort to deny him the right to vote.
The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Atlanta, seeks to halt the state’s attempts to verify the identities and citizenship of registered voters so close to the Nov. 4 election. Attorneys for the plaintiff, Jose Morales, also want the suit to become a class action.
U.S. District Judge Jack Camp scheduled a hearing for Friday morning on a request for a temporary restraining order.
The suit comes the day after the U.S. Department of Justice said the state’s actions to verify identity and citizenship appear to violate the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The law requires states with a history of discriminatory voting practices to get approval from the federal government before making certain changes to voting and election policy.
Handel has just put out a statement that includes the following:
“The lawsuit filed in Georgia appears to be an orchestrated and well organized effort to dismantle our state’s identification laws and verification process. The safeguards we have in place help to ensure that only those applicants and voters who meet all eligibility factors are permitted to cast a ballot in our elections.
Unfortunately, the organizations appear to want to open the door to allow non-citizens to register and vote in the General Election. If the plaintiff prevails, thousands of non-citizens in Georgia could be allowed to vote.

So long as that verification is speedy, fair and follows Federal law, I agree.
If this gentlemen is saying that he has been ‘methodically denied his right to vote’ I am more inclined to believe him than Mr. Handel.

Obama and ACORN should come down here and do some “Community Organizing.” That way the can steal the election in GA the way they are trying in the other states.

The man IS a citizen, she’s just a freakin bigot. Probabaly got some Katherine-Harris-like Policy of excluding people because their last name sounds Latin.

Now I guess the AJC insider will start reporting on the rampant voter fraud by the Obama/liberal front group, ACORN. ACORN is paying people with cigs in poor areas to vote. They want to register those who are not allowed to vote and then give them Cancer. How disgusting. I think that there is a tinge of racism to this tactic, the were giving them Newport Menthol smokes, after all.

I wish people who are not and refuse to become United States Citizens would stop complaining about their rights. The only right for non-citizens is for their right to live peacefully and productively. If you want rights to vote, go to school, get medical and financial help, then join the United States as a legal citizen. Stop taking away our rights as legal citizes, buy complaining all the time about what you don’t have, leard to speak english, which is the standard language for America. Governments in other countries certainly do not cater to anyone who is not a citizen of their country, including to speak their language. I am so fed up with this type of thing going on.

The libs do not want voter ID’s because it will make ACORN irrelevant. ACORN gets all kinds of tax payer money to illegally register democrat voters. If you have to have a photo ID to get everything else in this country it just makes sense to ask for a photo ID before voting.
The kicker is that the libs are the ones that claim that Republicans steal election. HAHAHAHAHHA Peace.

I think if Karen Handel had been around in the early 1960s she would have been one of those southern politicians openly trying to disenfranchise minority voters. You know you have a problem when the Department of Justice, the Social Security Administration, national law firms, and non-partisan voter advocacy groups all declare Karen Handel’s actions improper. I bet she has an entire floor of the State Attorney General’s Office working on her elections garbage. How much money are GA taxpayers going to have to spend to sort out Karen Handel’s mess?

First of all, Karen Handel only has a High School diploma. In addition to be uneducated and stupid she is a partisan hack who is attempting to destroy democracy in Georgia.
On the issue voter frau, Turnout and registration in urban areas have been lower than suburban and urban areas throughout modern history. Where the fraud? Inner city voter under index most of the time. This year it will be high and mostly because of Barack Obama. Acorn is just a scapegoat for the Republicans impending a* whooping than.
BTW, bottom up conspiracies to committ voter fraud don’t gain traction in modern American history. Acorn may have turned in some bogus forms, but widespread people incidents of people voting multiple times are rare in this day and age. It’s virtually impossibe to coordinate such an effort.
Bush has made voter fraud a priority and only 112 cases have been prosecuted during his administration.
Conservatives are raging hypocrites on this issue. Katheline Harris purged 20,000 people off the rolls as felons who weren’t felons and over half of these voters were African American. This would have given Gore the victory in Florida recount or not.
Ken Blackwell in Ohio did everything he could to ensure Bush had the best possible conditions to win Ohio in 2004.
In Mississippi this year the Republican Secretary of State attempted to move the highly competitive US Senate Race to the bottom of the ballot in order to cause undervotes.
Georgia Republican Secretary of State Karen Handel makes Ken Blackwell and Katheline Harris look choir girls.
In general, I am noticing a pattern among conservatives. They virtually ignore voter suppression because it benefits them. The pass voter ID laws with no proof that voter fraud is occuring. Georgia Republicans produced ZERO proof that illegal immigrants were voting or that people were multiple times when they passed the Voter ID law. The purpose of this law is to reduce minority turnout. Any other reason they state is pure BS.
You don’t here about Democrats suppressing votes in white Republican trailer parks in the rural south.
Republicans are the party that doesn’t want a lot of people to vote. It’s a shame that we have a Secretary of State in Georgia who wants to suppress votes. Republicans should be able to win Georgia without stealing it.

Karen Handel is an uneducated Maryland Republican with a very poor understanding of the mission of her office. She is in the news constantly and is, like George Bush and her former boss Sonny Perdue, a dangerous person.

Millions of Georgians are THANKFUL to finally having some Karen Handel types trying to clean up the mess from years of democrat rule in Georgia, with great progress!
If you ever thought Georgia was corrupted by racist democrats, consider NC with democrat oppression having CORRUPTED NC with over 100+ years of dominant rule. NC is hoping to elect the 3rd Republican governor-elect in 112 YEARs on Nov 4!!!

I wonder when the Libs @ AJC are going to pick up on and report about voter fraud by ACORN and Obamas $800,000 dotation to the organization, Obama and his Rezco affiliation, Socialist bomber Aires and Obama, Rev. Right and Obama, and Obama’s abortion stance? Why in the world would anyone even consider a vote for this man? We need change alright, but not to a Socialist Marxist Society. Wake up people. Thank You, Butch in Palmetto, Ga.

Jim, why would you leave out important facts about this case and everything about the law? You can read the complaint and responses on cbs.com, and this is really a b.s. case, unless you truly believe the 15th Amendment should be thrown to the curb and U.S. citizenship should not be checked before allowing an individual to vote. This has nothing to do with race and everything to do with a process put in place as a result of HAVA to verify citizenship. I hope you report on the case if the Cherokee County guy loses.
As a reporter, instead of writing a short article that prevents anyone from knowing what is actually the situation, you should really try to ensure your work tells the full story, even if that requires some work (and actual thought!) on your part, since that is your job.
