The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Secretary of State Karen Handel is on record saying that there is no giant surge of voter registration in Georgia — and in the largest context, she’s right.
Newly released figures from her office show that 406,379 new voters registered between Jan. 1 to Sept. 30. Four years ago, the number was 371,932.
Overall, that’s a 9 percent increase from ’04 to ’08 — hardly surprising in a presidential race with no incumbent. Barack Obama or no Barack Obama.
But this is far from the whole story. Those same numbers show that 164,859 of those new voters are African-American. And 176,570 of those new voters are white.
That’s a 27 percent increase in new voter registration for African-Americans over ’04, and a 13.7 percent decrease in new voter registration for whites over ’04.
This is significant given that, overall, blacks make up 29 percent of Georgia’s 5.5 million voters. And it fits with the fact that, in the first days of early voting in Georgia, African-Americans have cast nearly 40 percent of the ballots.

Overall, new registration by non-white voters (including Asians and Hispanics) outpaced new registration by white voters, 230,036 to 176,570.
Even this isn’t the whole story. Monday is the final day to register to vote in time for the Nov. 4 presidential election. No doubt you saw this AJC article on the routine purging of voters from the rolls.
Handel’s office won’t say how many names have been purged this year, but 274,000 were removed last year for inactivity.
There’s nothing to suggest that this process isn’t on the up-and-up. But remember the Feb. 5 presidential primary? African-Americans made up 30 percent of the 2 million votes cast.
That means, statistically, a disproportionate number of African-Americans protected themselves from being purged from voter rolls for inactivity.

Is this really a news story? With the amount of new residents that have moved into the state since last year, the amount of newly registered voters would make since. That is why the number is roughly the same since last year.
The media really needs to start going back to reporting actual news..not trying to sensationalize something that does not exist. Just like CNN reporting that Steve Jobs was seriously ill causing Apple’s stock to plummet.
The AJC needs to look into actual news. This could explain why their subscriptions have dropped continuously over the years. Where is the article about that? We just want unbiased news and if you cannot provide it, there are a lot of other sources that do.

Karen Handel upwards of a year ago stated publicly there was no way she could deploy a paper trail backup to ensure voting integrity next month.

Hey sambo, it sounds like you are not happy about the new registrations. Look, I am unsure what race you are, but this country is in shambles. At least Obama has a plan, and his running mate is seasoned. On the other side, McCain may have what it takes, but his age and health increases the likelyhood of a Palin office. No matter your party, it is obvious that Palin is not ready to assume the VP post, or the top desk. It will take more than good ole common sense to fix the Bush mess. Obama/Biden is the best ticket. This statement is demonstrably false. Black Americans did not vote for Sen. Carol Mosely-Braun (Illinois Democrat running for president), Rev. Sharpon, CEO Herman Cain (Republican for Senate), Lynn Swann (credible candidate for PA Senate). This list is not exhaustive.
I wish this newspaper ran fewer race-based stories, when it is imminently forseeable that these stories will elicit racially polarizing, insulting, unthoughtful comments from people across political/racial spectra. Such comments make me sad about what lurks in the hearts of too many in and about this great city.

Why does everything have to broken down by race in the South. Why can’t the story be about people, just people, going to the polls to vote. Unfortunately, it is the media that brings up race at every twist, turn, and corner.
Who cares about what race people are that goes to vote early. How about many Americans are voting early, and there are many new Americans that have registered? Geez!
As long as the “south is the south,” and the ignorants continue, race will be a factor in absolutely everything that “absolutely” doesn’t matter as long as we’re in the south.

It is the same thing you all have been doing for so many years. You vote for your own people regarless of what they do. Take Sarah Palin for instance….And if you want to be realistic about it you all are the ones who take a nobody and boost them up to be somebody even though they have no education, experience or even a clue to what is going on in this country. You do the math 5 different colleges just to complete a bachelors degree. If she were in competetion with a black lady who was highly educated you all would still vote for her just because she was white. He held a press conference back in June at the National Press Club to make his ridiculous claims and was arrested on several outstanding warrants at the end of his presentation. If you are commenting on voting trends, Blacks traditionaly are one of the Democrats strongest blocks getting anywhere from 85% to 95% of the vote in that segment. Black people are not voting for Barack simply because he is Black but also he is a Democrat and represents most of their ideal. Your argument would only hold true if Black people voted for Black Republicans in the same numbers, they don’t. If I am wrong, give me an example. I can’t think of one.

The Dems. have traditionally supported programs that benefit middle/low income families, support initiatives for assistance in economically impoverished communities. Unfortunately, there are many Blacks that are in or have come from such communities where community organizers get their start. Look past race ” a conjured category, definition” and get to the real issues of this election and debate.

Everyone is simply weak, afraid and scared of the unknown. Why can’t this country get past it’s race problems? The idea of America has always contained a dissonance philosophy……..

We have the AJC to thank for the sad state of race relations in Atlanta. The AJC thrives on making every issue in the metro area a Black/White issue? Out of the last 38 sessions of congress, 28 were controlled by the Democrats. More recently, since the 2006 midterm elections where they have been the majority in the House of Representatives and the Democratic caucus (including two independents), constitute a majority in the United States Senate, hold a majority of state governorships, and control a plurality of state legislatures.

Obama has a plan? HIS plan is the same as what gave us this mortgage crisis. HIS advisors are the ones who sank these firms and made away with millions. HIS plan is to tax those who would create jobs. HIS plan is NOTHING on energy. Anyone supporting Obama is voting FOR economic incompetence. They’d support the same people who tanked the housing market and mortgage industry AND the same policy that keeps groceries and gas expensive.

Experience isn’t going to be the issue this time and it shouldn’t be. Don’t forget that the man who won in 2004 had 4 years experience as president…and he had been the governor of the 2nd largest state in the nation…and his father had been the president before him. George W’s second term was arguably worse than his first. Therefore it’s time to quit arguing over who has the most experience. The real issue should be who has the most intelligence. When you look at it that way, there’s no contest. Obama is cool, thoughtful and well-spoken. McCain doesn’t come close. He rushed to Washington last week to help save the Wall Street fiasco and only made matters worse. His choice of Palin on the ticket does not show sound reasoning. The majority of Americans aren’t going to elect him because he isn’t smart enough for the job.

At the VP debate, in Palin, I saw a Governor, who feels herself above the law. McCain, knowing that she is under investigation, tabbed her to be his VP. He showed atrocious judgment, the thuggery aspect of his character and that he learned zip from the Keating affair. He has interfered with a State investigation and injected bitter D.C. politics in order to influence its outcome. This is the guy, who is saying that he is the one to change Washington. Fool me twice. It occurs to me that, if elected, they would further politicize the justice system on the order of Alberto Gonzales. The laws are something that others should follow, not them. With McCain, folks with “boots on the ground” in Iraq should be given deference. In Alaska, though, he just ran over State officials who have “boots on the ground” and knowledge of their own affairs. The Senate must DO ITS DUTY, investigate McCain and censure him if warranted. We are seeing a bad precedence being set. It should not be allowed to stand. McCain should not be allowed to inject Keating Six mentality and Third World thuggery into the government and politics of this country.
I am pleading with every one of you, who believe as I do that this is setting a bad precedence and smacks of thuggery to write to your elected officials demanding that McCain be investigated for his dealings in the local official affairs of the State of Alaska.

what bothers me is the registering of ILLEGALS, obviously illegals, not citizens, in libraries. They have to ask by law if you want to register to vote if you are in the library getting a card. I think that most black people are raised to beat “the system” so that they may advance or survive by doing as little as possible. THey believe that white people owe them so that it is OK to live off the system. That is why they have so many kids but don’t file taxes as married or even get married. Interesting comments. I remember my Pastor telling us once (and this was long before the Presidential election/ Obama came along) that you should always vote on issues and NOT on skin color and I couldn’t agree more.
I can’t honestly say that Obama was my choice early on in the campaign when there was still a pool of Dem. candidates to choose from. The fact is that yes, there are those of us that will vote for him simply because he is black and that’s the way that we normally vote (Democratic).
And yes, there are those of our white counterparts that will vote for McCain simply because he is white and yes, because they only vote Republican. I know that I have seen A LOT of individuals on the Marta trains and at the grocery store asking “are you a registered voter” and based on the article below and from what I have heard on the news there has been a surge in black voter registration.
My prayer for all of my black brothers and sisters is that we are voting on issues and with the right intentions and not because we feel that Obama will be some Black Messiah. The issues that are facing US today and within our communities will be the same issues facing us after November 4th no matter who gets the WH. Real change has to begin within each individual and their individual families and communities before it can happen on a national level.

The Obama gay sex drug story is true. The limo driver dropped him off at a bar he had a few drinks, got in the car and told the drive to take him to the south side. He ask the limo to stop handed him money for crack and powder cocaine. They then drove off, parked and began using. Later that same night, while coked to the gills Obama and the driver engaged in sexual congress. They then met later in a hotel and did the same thing again. this story has been around Chicago for along time. It has never been seriously knocked down. Since this country was built by a diverse groups British, Chinese, Irish-Americans, and African-American, one would think we would be more culturally sensitive. All of these groups have different faith. With that said, why must the Bible be the only religious book one can use to be sworn in. Uneducated or unread people believes Muslim is synomous with terrorism or extremist. Let’s think outside the box for a moment: Many past presidents have used the Bible to be sworn into office and their morally and spritually have been questioned. Richard Nixon Watergate Scandal (morally corrupt); John Kennedy - adultery (spritually corrupt); Thomas Jeffeson - owner of slaves (morally and spritually corrput); Lyndon Johnson - personnaly corrupt; Clinton - adultery. CHANGE IS COMMING. According to population data, in about 40 years from now, whites would be in the minority. We have a president who we all know is not very bright and I suspect that if he were black, he wouldn’t even get anywhere near the white house. Now comes Sarah Palin, who in my opinion, does not have the intellect and qualification to be vice president. If she were black she would have a hard time gaining a job as a convenient store manager. But there she is running as McCain’s vice-president. The skin color of the majority in this country has allowed a lot of incompetent people to get into positions where they are absolutely not qualified to be in. As the demographics change in this country, we would have a diverse talent pool to draw from and just being white wouldn’t be sufficient qualification.

I don’t think it’s racist at all. As human beings, we are going to vote for who we feel most comfortable with. Soccer moms, hockey moms, whatever moms…a good portion of them feel more comfortable with Palin and they can relate to her, so naturally they’re going to vote for her. Most black people feel that they can relate with Obama more than McCain or Palin, so naturally they’re going to vote for the candidate they’re are most comfortable with. If Obama was white, I’m pretty sure most of them would overwhelmingly vote for him than McCain. Now the few blacks that are republican party members or feel they can relate with McCain more than Obama, naturally they will for McCain. If you’re a Democrat party member black or white and feel comfortable with Obama, naturally you’re going to vote for him and vice verse for the Republican party. For a black person call a person of another race, racist for not voting for Obama, that’s just racist. People have it wrong, if you look at history, Blacks voted for the Republican party until the 1930’s when FDR made many promises but never delivered. The Republican party was established to abolish slavery not the Democratic party. The Democratic party is why Blacks struggles for 100 years after the end of slavery but after the 1964 civil rights legislation, which was passed with the help of Republicans, the majority of Southern Democrats voted against it; Blacks started voting Democratic because the Democrats fooled the fools into thinking they were their partner. Lester Maddox was a Democrat and segregationist along with Bull Connor.
These people are sheep that follow anything published by the Democrats and do not do their research. After the civil rights passage, the Democrats established policies which destroyed the Black family, single woman with children inceased and now single women head the black family 70%. Let them keep doing what they are doing and support the Democrats 90% Soon they will not be a problem to anybody.

**In 1961, Robert F. Kennedy predicted that the country could elect a black president in the next 40 years. (google it if you don’t believe it). Like his brother JFK, a visionary, RFK knew that the country race relations were changing. RFK, like MLK and many others, could envision US, inspite of its embarassing and deplorable racist laws, would one day have a leader that was based on merit, intergity and not priviledge. There are many who so embedded in white priviledge that idea of black leadership brings out the hate not the logic, which they are suggesting. The only contact he has ever had with averagage American is while campaigning. I would bet that Obama still knows some poor people. He is surrounded by advisors, Obama had advisors and the personal connection to the people to hear and understand their fears.

No scruples and illegitimate. Voted “present” over 100 times in the Illinois legislature. Lazy. He has backtracked on just about everything he has campaigned on. I’d like to know when SNL is going to get around to slamming Obama for his faults and deficiencies. There are plenty to choose from (57 states, Michonians…I’m guessing he meant people from Michigan…Reznik, Wright, ACORN, Ayers). I’m afraid in the effort to be politically correct, we’ll never see these and if we do, the Obama camp will launch an all out attack at the racists at SNL who dare to criticize the Messiah. With tens of thousands of people showing up at rallies (according Obama’s numbers) and the media becoming completely orgasmic at the mere mentioning of his name, you’d think he’d be running away with this election. The only numbers that matter are the ones that result from actual votes. Having so many new registered voters is wonderful. The issue I have is with some commentors that suggest that blacks are so ignorant to vote for Obama based on his color only. I would ask have they always voted for the white candidates based on their color or on their skills? Don’t undermind the African American community like this, this is very divisive. McCain continuously violates the Code of Conduct
In direct violation of the Code of Conduct, McCain, who was supposedly in solitary confinement, met with and was interviewed by several foreign news reporters and political delegations, including many high-ranking North Vietnamese leaders, such as Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap, North Vietnam’s Minister of Defense and national hero.
Through the Freedom of Information Act, the U.S. Veteran Dispatch acquired a declassified Department of Defense (DOD) transcript of an interview prominent French television reporter Francois Chalais had with McCain.
Chalais told of his private interview with POW McCain in a series titled “Life in Hanoi”, which was aired in Europe. In the series, Chalais said his meeting with McCain was “a meeting which will leave its mark on my life.”
“My meeting with John Sidney McCain was certainly one of those meetings which will affect me most profoundly for the rest of my life. I had asked the North Vietnamese authorities to allow me to personally interrogate an American Prisoners. They authorized me to do so. When night fell, they took me —- without any precautions or mystery —- to a hospital near the Gia Lam airport reserved for the military (passage omitted). The officer who receives me begins: “I ask you not to ask any questions of political nature. If this man replies in a way unfavorable to us, they will not hesitate to speak of `brainwashing’ and conclude that we threatened him.
“This John McCain is not an ordinary prisoner. His father is none other than Admiral Edmond John McCain, commander in chief of U.S. Naval forces in Europe. (passage omitted).
Another declassified DOD document reports an interview between POW McCain and Dr. Fernando Barral, a Spanish psychiatrist who was living in Cuba at the time. The interview was published in the Havana Gramma in January 1970.
According to the DOD report, the meeting between Barral and McCain took place away from the prison at the office of the Committee for Foreign Cultural Relations in Hanoi. During that interview, POW McCain sipped coffee and ate oranges and cakes with his interrogator.
During that interview, McCain again seriously violated the Code of Conduct by failing to “evade answering questions” to the “utmost” of his ability when he, according to the DOD report, helped Barral by answering questions in Spanish, a language McCain had learned in school.
On Dec. 7, 1969, McCain was moved out of isolation and into the “Hanoi Hilton” with other prisoners of war.

Today, McCain, who claims he was brutally tortured by the Communist Vietnamese, focally emerged as Hanoi’s leading advocate for normalized relations with the United States.
McCain’s high-profile and unrelenting support for a government that brutally tortured and murdered his fellow POWs is causing POW/MIA Family members and fellow Vietnam veterans to question the senator and his motivations.
They ask what drives McCain, who owes his public life to the tag “former POW,” to work so hard for Hanoi and so diligently to discredit any possibility, in fact the probability, that Hanoi held back live U.S. prisoners of war after the 1973 prisoner release.

Over 85% of white Mississippians voted for George Bush in 2004. In Georgia 78% of white voters voted for W. If you take out metro Atlanta white voters have virutally the same block voting behavior as white people in Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina. African Americans are not only group in America that tend to block vote. We have millions of people in Georgia who vote Republican if a the candidate says three symbolic things that don’t have any affect their everyday lives.
It’s fair to say African American block vote, but the very people in this board who criticise this block voting are part of group that block votes.
BTW, In the 40% of African American households that make over 50,000 a year Republicans don’t fair much better than with African Americans who are on food stamps.
BTW, In the 16% of African American households that make over 80,000 a year Republicans aren’t making much of dent.
The reason for this is the IGNORANT rants that you all though this board. The African American community is divided on social issues, immigration issues and attends Church at higher rate than most Americans. Take away Obama’s historic candidacy Republicans should do better with blacks.
All I can say to all of the Neil Boortz wannabees on this board is keep doing what you’re doing. You’re helping to keep middle class and socially conservative African Americans in the Democratic camp for years to come.

I would just like to say for all of those racists who think blacks are voting for Obama only because he is black. Get over yourself, I am a black woman who makes over $100K a year (and I did it the right way by becoming well educated), and not looking for food stamps or a social program to keep from working. I am a very conservative Democrat, and at times do not agree with a lot of the ideals of Democrats in Washington, however, I’m smart enough to know that the GOP has done an excellent job in taking this country to the pot, and I don’t want four more or maybe even 8 more years of that. And for once if the GOP could actually muster an ounce of truth, I might could be convinced to switch parties, but I can’t deal with the perceived hatred that seems to run rampant in that party towards other minorities whether it be blacks, hispanics, asians, or otherwise. The GOP strike me as a party of total intolerance, and that’s why I could never be a Republican until it became the party of Lincoln again.

We need to focus on the fact that the country is in a mess. If a black man, white man, or purple man can fix the problem—fix it!!! It is time to move forward. People vote for people that they can relate to. If McCain is the person that you can relate to then vote for him. If Obama is the one you can relate to, vote for him. Some people are voting for Obama because he is black. Some are voting for McCain because he is white. However, I caution people on that…you may find yourself voting for political views you disagree on. We are a state divided by color and a 1950’s mentality. By the way, for the guy talking about the murder rate in Montana….their population is less than a million, and their murder rate in 2005 was 18. Atlanta, with a population of two million in the same time period had 21 murders.

As an African American from the great state of Virginia, I just want to say that Georgia has a mighty long way to go when it comes to race relations. The comments I am reading are extremely troubling. I would not dare raise my children in Georgia and I pray that race relations in Georgia improve. This past Saturday, Barack Obama spoke in my hometown of Newport News VA and the turnout was overwhelming with a broad support from whites and blacks. I listened to both debates and realized McCain is experienced but not realistic, he would rather for Americans to keep suffering and keep fighting war. Obama is experienced as well, but of course he does not have the same background as McCain but if Feel that this man can really do this. Ok, like the first comment, people need to grow up and stop attacking the black community. I am a white female which is for OBAMA.. I listened to both debates and realized McCain is experienced but not realistic, he would rather for Americans to keep suffering and keep fighting war. Obama is experienced as well, but of course he does not have the same background as McCain but if Feel that this man can really do this. I grew up in a family where my family was racist towards blacks and it really confused me throughtout my life. People do not realize that the line has to be drawn somewhere. What about whites not voting for him because he’s black or whites voting for McCain because he’s white even though they don’t know what he stands for. Can we say Keating 5 that same issue that we’re facing now with the mortgage industry. Can we say supported Bush over 90% of the time or the fact that he’s still honoring the same Bush tax plans that doesn’t work. A person that so endorsed deregulation that is causing us issues right now. Maybe we can discuss his integrity for forcing his disfigured wife to divorce to marry his mistress the following month. That mistress(well now 2nd wife) that is a known drug addict and should have been a convict for stealing from a charity organization. Why was he so in a rush to marry her? Well, she happens to be worth $100 million dollars and her family’s money helped him to get into the Arizona elite circle. He doesn’t even know how many homes he owns, but he calls Obama an elitist. The same man that wears $600 shoes and whose wife wore $300K earring to the repuke convention. How can they ever understand what people are going through? Why wouldn’t he think the economy is fundamentally strong? As for Palin, can we mention the troopergate fraud crazy voodoo sidekick. She lied about the bridge to nowhere and the money she saved Alaska. People talk about black baby mamas. What about Bristol? Pregnant at 17? Oh I forgot, she’s engaged. Yeah, right. A shotgun that will not even last a year. Why would I vote for someone that believes in abstinence and no sex education in schools, but has a pregnant teenage daughter? As a black female who IS EDUCATED, voted for BARACK OBAMA on OCT,3.2008 I was proud to see (so many Black PEOPLE Vote in GWINNETT CO). White Christian Supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan has endorsed Barack Obama to be the next President of the United States of America.
Speaking from his Kentucky office in Dawson Springs, the Imperial Wizard exclaimed that anything or anyone is better than having that “crazy a* b***” as President.
This is the first time in Klan history that any member of the KKK has ever publicly supported an African American candidate for the presidency.
