U.S. Department of Energy to Sonny Perdue: ‘Uh, thanks for the letter, governor, but we didn’t do it for you’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Late Wednesday, the office of Sonny Perdue issued a press release stating that Samuel Bodman, the U.S. Secretary of Energy, had approved the Georgia governor’s request for additional releases of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to Gulf Coast refineries.
Nearly 1 million barrels of crude were given their freedom.
Said Perdue, from Spain: “These crude releases will help ensure that the Southeast continues to receive consistent fuel supplies as we continue to see more stations receive fuel and lines shorten. I appreciate the Administration’s quick response and their concern for the fuel shortages we have experienced.”
This was ipso facto proof that our governor can handle a gasoline crisis and hunt down jobs in Europe at the same time.
Except that it’s not exactly true. Perdue’s request was well-timed, but there was no cause-and-effect, the DOE said today. The release was approved because of industry requests — not because of a letter from the governor.
Here’s a statement issued by Healy E. Baumgardner, press secretary for the DOE:
“DOE approved an additional release of up to 900,000 barrels of crude oil from the SPR to two refiners who submitted requests. This was a concurrent request made by the individual refiners that echoed what the Governor was asking for. The 900,000 barrel SPR release was not in direct response to the Governor’s request.
“We appreciate the Governor’s concern about fuel supplies in the United States. As he noted, emergency oil exchanges from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve are an important tool to mitigate supply constraints. Following Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, DOE released over four million barrels of SPR oil for this purpose, and stands ready to quickly assist in response to additional refinery requests.
Update: Bert Brantley, spokesman for Perdue, said the governor never meant to claim undue credit. Brantley said:
“As our Monday letter to President Bush noted, we were fully aware and appreciative of the Department of Energy’s previous SPR releases. After hearing from the industry that there could be some additional refinery capacity available, we simply wanted to go on record supporting additional SPR releases if refineries saw a gap between what they could process and the amount of crude they were receiving.
“We never expected DOE to approve the request only because we asked, and never intended to imply that the request was granted only because we asked.”

It looks like nothing will make you Sonny-haters happy. Maybe you think he should have gotten on television and explained to the people that there is a crisis but that it will improve eventually (like FDR did after the stock market crash of 1929, according to Joe Biden, the only problem is that FDR wasn’t president then and there was no commercial television in 1929 - what a doofus Biden is!).

I suspect that the request had some impact, but not full impact as Sonny would like to claim. But if you wanted Roy back in office remember he left the state $700,000,000 in debt. The Republican administration did get us up to a $2 billion surplus which we are now using due to a declining economy. I don’t agree with everything Sonny has done but this state is in considerably better shape now than when he took over.
And let me add one more comment about Biden: The AJC and other press outlets completely ignored his comments about FDR and his television address during the 1929 stock crash. (FDR was not President and TV had not been invented yet.) Imagine how Bookman and the rest of the AJC staff would have reacted if Palin had made those comments.

Bubba the vetinarian had his head stuck up a panda’s butt when he should have been on top of this. Perdue is your typical fat cattin politician who has only held office for further financial gain. How much money do you need Sonny? That sweet land deal you got is still criminal in my mind..and you know it. This waters down his being a foster parent and other good deeds he might have done. He’s no different than any of these other money grubbin ding dongs. No way he’ll be re-elected, and how dare he take credit for something that still is not fixed.

What people should realize is this demonstrates that people critisized his inactiveness but in reality there is not much he can do (except to wrigte a letter requesting oil from our SPR) to “force” the petroleum industry or the DOE to improve our current crisis. I mean, if our President and other political leaders haven’t developed plans for the sortages we are likely to continue to experience, why should he have.
Thank you Governor Purdue for your attempt at what no one else can fix either. You at least gave an effort to send the letter. Now, get back to getting some of those European industry jobs so all of these critics can kiss your rear later for the nice pay check they’ll earn working in a foreign owned factory.

I read that two letters simultaneously or concurrently arrived asking for release of SPR supplies, one from the refineries and one from the Ga gov. I don’t interpret the Gov’s statement as wanting to take credit for any reserve release. I don’t give a dam about who was ultimately responsible, only that letters were written and our federal gov’t and state gov’t acted responsibly for a change. I only ask why are there not protocols in place for automatic release of reserves that don’t require friggin’ letters!

john j, I hate to break this to ya, but you got your numbers backwards.
Gov. Barnes did not leave the state $700,000,000 in the red. When Gov. Barnes left office, the state had a $600,000,000 surplus. That so-called “rainy day” fund got used up in the first two years of Sonny’s first term.
But I’m sure that won’t change your opinion, will it?

To those who ask how he got elected: He was elected the first time by people who thought the Confederate battle flag on the state flag was more important than being competent. He was elected the second time because too many Georgians are fools who believed him when he claimed he add 1.5 billion to education funding, which he did after he cut 2 billion out of it. I never voted for him because I remember when he became a Republican it was because the Democrats didn’t think he had what it takes to be government. Fool me once shame on you. I thought it was a laugh when he was suggested as being “high on the list” for being the republican VP a few months ago. But then we got Palin. Sonny is no public servant. A public servant is a servant leader not someone that simply enriches himself with lobbyist perks and dollars. Sonny don’t care anyway. In a few years he’ll be fat and happy. When will we stop rewarding these types of charlatans. Public service has lost its good name, behind every posture of doing good is a handout or a personal payoff. To my Democratic brethren, a few questions. Who ruled this state with an iron hand for 130 years? Who handled education spending when our system was rated at or near the bottom during that time? Who controlled the legislature and governor’s office when the water wars started in the late 80’s? Atlanta traffic has been bad for decades. Who controlled the state for all but the last six years and still controls Atlanta and Fulton County? Give the GOP another 124 years and then you can complain and gripe.

So does that mean we have to wait 124 years for the Republicans to stop their p** contests and do something about transportation, education, water, and air quality. I don’t care who has control of the state government as long as they take care of business. After being in the wilderness for 124 years, one would have thought the Republicans would have come in and done what they claim the Democrats didn’t do. Instead, we get nothing for six years. When might those of us who dare criticize Sonny expect the Republicans to stop acting like a bunch of bubbas fighting over the last PBR and hush puppy and actually do something?

I don’t care who has control of the state government as long as they take care of business. After being in the wilderness for 124 years, one would have thought the Republicans would have come in and done what they claim the Democrats didn’t do. Instead, we get nothing for six years. When might those of us who dare criticize Sonny expect the Republicans to stop acting like a bunch of bubbas fighting over the last PBR and hush puppy and actually do something?

Point taken, RES, just one more reason anyone with a brain would know how foolish it is to completely support one party or the other.
Neither party holds a monopoly on good public servants, and it’s for darned sure neither holds a monopoly on buffoons.

Typical Perdue…quick to take credit, even if he didn’t act quickly or in the best interest of the voters until it was in his best interest. I can’t wait until this man is out of office.

Seriously, some of you people need to take some lessons in how government works and stop spewwing the liberal “it’s all Bush’s fault” b.s. You can continue to blame Bush for everything but the reality is that it took both parties and millions of greedy Americans (rich, poor, black, white, yellow, Republican, Dem, etc etc)to get us to the point we are today. Granted, Bush is an easy target because he without question has done some stupid things but the rest of our elected officials in Washington cannot be excused for their lack of leadership.

Sonny is a loser.
He said it was our fault and there was no problem.
Earlier he wanted to drop the gas sales tax, like that would have helped.
He prayed for rain on the steps of our public capital. Those South GA folks love that.

This ‘gas shortage’ was contrived from the beginning. The hurricanes just came in right handy at the right moment. This is just a last ditch effort to get more money into Big Oil’s coffers before the bottom falls out on Nov. 4th. WAKE UP, GEORGIANS!

If Sonny boy has left us with 2 billion, why does he want to get his hands on the Teacher Retirement Fund? His hand picked group of flunkies want to change the wording where the state doesn’t have to give the retiree’s a 3% cost of living supplement each year. I guess he will use that money to go back to China and Europe to get Georgia People more jobs. What a joke. I agree with what Yeehaw said—-greed—when is enough—enough.

This almost doesn’t derserve any comments….but just like ‘ANY’ Politician…..will always take credit for something they had absolutely NO hand in. The problem really fixed itself over the long haul, what’s it been…3 weeks since the hurricane……if our beloved Governor had any care at all he would have initiated something within a week of the hurricane and not have sat on his backside so long….waiting this long and then trying to say he fixed the problem…..give me a break….probably going to be the same next year with Bush….if the economy takes a turn for the good…he will do the same and say I told you so and tell us it was his policies beginning to work…..same old BS we hear all the time from these idiots….when will we get some people in office who really care about the people of this great country and not themselves…..there needs to be legislation in place to limit the House and Senate to a max of 8 years in office just like the President….that would bring in fresh ideas every few years rather than re-electing the same old trash every time they come up for re-election who have nothing better or new to offer….maybe that could keep us out of the situations we are in now…….

Oh, give me a break! After Katrina Sunny and that Cox woman decided to give the children a day off to conserve gas - I’ve been waiting for that stupidity to happen again. If Sunny was truly on the ball and working as an advocate for the people of Georgia he would have handled this all very differently. He had options and the authority and couldn’t see the situation coming and couldn’t manage it once it started. Where the heck are his staff in all this? No wonder whenever Georgia affairs are mentioned in the national press it’s with the attitude of ‘look at what stupidity is going on there again.’

It’s funny to me how the only way Sonny-lovers can actually defend the man is by attacking Joe Biden on completely unrelated issues. Clouding the issue doesn’t erase the facts right here at home. And I can tell you this that I work in an office full of average, everyday, non-elitist people who certainly are not “liberal” and they can’t stand the man. So put that in your conservative pipe and smoke it. BTW, how come Sonny didn’t have us all praying for gas?

How bout this…a hundred or more yrs. have went by with the southeast facing hurricanes and now all of sudden we have a shortage in the midst of an economic struggle or should I say collapse. Come on now does anyone find this a lil strange? Now we are talking about all this other stuff..where Bush messed up and he’s stupid and Perdue is not worth of crap..let’s just remember you all voted for these people. The same people who are not going through the same ecomomic struggle as common everyday working people. Bush made and is still making money over in Iraq, along with Cheney. Perdue still owns massive amount of land and lets not forget he used the good old boy system to get that. To be honest..we really dont matter in their world..to all who believe and support these modern day politicians/crooks and who are still living everyday average lives..go right ahead and keep supporting and see how much love they will have for you in the end. They have their land that they are going to pick up and run to when the crap really hits the fan..check it out..Dubai(the only 7 star resort in the world) ironically built right in the middle east. Hey if you ask me I would rather have a crooked politician who is at least going to keep money in my pocket and jobs available than a crooked politician who keeps it all to themselves and watches other suffer…Bush or Clinton…McCain or Obama…Perdue or ANYBODY(inclduing stray dogs, cats, birds, the entire animal kingdom)…But seriously you people need to wake up and realize whats going on and stop worrying about a party or skin-color and worry about the issues and how its going to affect you in the long run..cause nobody including the rich can afford to go thru eight more yrs. of what we just went thru..but like my mom always told me a hard head will make a soft backside.
