Trouble brewing: McCain says ‘there never existed a deal’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The following statement was just issued by the Republican presidential campaign of John McCain. The key is this phrase: “There never existed a ‘deal’” ..
To wit:
To address our current financial crisis, John McCain suspended his campaign and returned to Washington, D.C., today to help build a bipartisan consensus for a proposal that would protect the American taxpayer.
Despite today’s news reports, there never existed a “deal,” but merely a proposal offered by a small, select group of Members of Congress. As of right now, there exists only a series of principles, including greater oversight and measures to address CEO pay. However, these principles do not enjoy a consensus in Congress.
At today’s cabinet meeting, John McCain did not attack any proposal or endorse any plan. John McCain simply urged that for any proposal to enjoy the confidence of the American people, stressing that all sides would have to cooperate and build a bipartisan consensus for a solution that protects taxpayers.
However, the Democrats allowed Senator Obama to run their side of the meeting. That did not work as the meeting quickly devolved into a contentious shouting match that did not seek to craft a bipartisan solution.
At this moment, the plan that has been put forth by the Administration does not enjoy the confidence of the American people as it will not protect that taxpayers and will sacrifice Main Street in favor of Wall Street.
The bottom line is that as of tonight, there are not enough Republican or Democrat votes for the current plan. However, we are still optimistic that a bipartisan solution will be found. Republicans and Democrats want a deal that will protect the taxpayers.
Tomorrow, John McCain will return to Capitol Hill where he will work with all sides to build a bipartisan solution that protects taxpayers and keeps Americans in their homes.

I remember years ago when I was in high school, one of the students pulled the fire alarm in order to get out of an exam exam they were not prepared for. I wonder if McCain went to my high school.

What alternate reality does this guy live in? McCain derailed the deal that was already in the works for his own political gain. He hasn’t even “stopped” his campaign- his ads are still running, his surrogates are still on the attack. This is nothing but a stunt, politicizing this crisis for his own gain. John McCain is reducing himself to a punch line.

Spin, spin, spin, McCain….it just makes your trip down the drain much quicker. It figures you would lie about this, since you’ve lied about everything else. Why stop now? Guess what McCain, you’re done. you might as well pack your bags and go back to one of your 7 houses. America wants nothing to do with you, or your careless political stunts.

I guess this is his way of “suspending his campaign”? Issuing statements from the presidential campaign; continuing to air ads on TV; holding rallies (Palin); and sending his surrogates to do the talking on TV… All that is suspended is my belief in the credibility of this candidate.

Every time I think there’s nothing more surreal or amoral the McCain campaign can do, they surprise me yet again. They have taken “Bearing false witness” to a new level. There can be no true Christians left among them. They are godless, lying opportunists, the lot of them.
The John McCain I respected in 2000 is gone forever.

I’m amazed that there is still quite a bit of name calling. Just do the right thing and attempt, I know it’s nearly impossible, to convince the conservatives that it’s a spectacularly bad idea to continue the Shrub Administration for another 18 months or so. Then we’ll just have to surrender to the fundamentalists under Saint Palin.

McChicken? How do you figure that? McCain challenged Obama to a series of 10 town hall meetings. I beleive Obama turned him down. McCain and Obama need to focus on a bipartisan compromise on how to get this nation back on track NOW. They both still have sworn responsibilities to the American people who elected them to the U.S. Congress. Why is it so important for the debate to happen Friday? What’s so majical about that? Our nation is in the throes of a huge recession and headed for a collapse of monumental proportions. People are losing their homes and the effects are far-reaching. For them not to be in D.C. right now would be akin to “fiddling while Rome burned.”
I’ll be honest, I’m not convinced that McCain/Palin are the right people for the job, but, I am totally convinced that Obama/Biden are NOT the answer. His tax plan alone will continue to stymie the economy. From corporate income taxes to the so-called “death tax”, he’ll continue to take from the working class (and, yes, the “rich”) to fund his ill-conceived social program. In other words, take from those who work hard for their money and give to those who never have and never intend to work for anything.

No credit? People think, “oh, I’ll have to to be frugal and live on what I have, but this is because individuals see credit as an infrequent event - a car loan, a house loan, maybe a consumer loan for an appliance.
What they don’t often see is that US commerce exists because of the availability of daily credit. Businesses like Home Depot, Walmart, Caterpillar, GM - they float their inventory and raw materials and pay back as they sell. If they don’t have credit they will not make a profit and will shutter their stores and factories and jobs will go.
Everyone will be affected by the billions of dollars of losses being incurred by the giants of the world’s financial markets and the subsequent job losses.
It was reported last night that 600,000 have already lost their jobs this year. We can expect that thousands more will wake up tomorrow or the next day to find that their jobs (and their companies) have ceased to exist.
We need to think about a world without credit. How many people can survive the financial calamity of the rising interest rate on credit cards or loans (because it will happen, and sooner than later).

I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight…..
If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you’re ‘exotic, different.’ If you grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, it’s a quintessential American story.
If your name is Barack you’re a radical, unpatriotic secret Muslim. If you name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you’re a maverick.
If you graduate from Harvard law School you are unstable. If you attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you’re well grounded.
If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience. If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking executive.
If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real Christian. If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife after a serious car accident and married the heiress the next month, you’re a Christian.
If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society. If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state’s school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you’re very responsible.
If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family’s values don’t represent America’s values.
If you’re husband is nicknamed ‘First Dude’, with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn’t register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.
OK, much clearer now.

Is it just me or do those people who purchased homes for NOTHING down, now not need to come up with the equivalent at least of a down payment in order to save their homes. Would that not at least recover some of the losses and perhaps let them stay in their homes? In my lifetime, you were expected to make a down payment except for VA loans. Regarding the CEOs who bailed out in time to receive millions as severance and/or retirement, shame on you and what comes around, goes around. Were the Secretary of the Treasury and the rest of the Administration so asleep at the wheel that they could not forewarn us until they thought we were in a panic situation? I hope that we will have detailed information before Congress is even asked to vote. I am not convinced that a bailout is in our best interest. This seems like a self serving solution.
President Bush is as passionate about our upcoming recession as he was about Iraq’s WMDs, which has cost a trillion dollars, only with less of a plan on dealing with it, except that he wants to spend about another trillion. There is also no exit strategy, if he is wrong. This is not a bailout. It is a power grab.
Why is it such a secret as to whom will be getting this $700 billion in their pockets? How is this money actually guaranteed as getting back to us? I am not convinced that this whole exercise is not just a covert way of rescuing politically connected fat cats. Where are the specific details

Ya’ll can argue as much as you want about this stuff, but the truth of the matter is that probably 90% of the people know who they are going to vote for and 25% of them have lied to others about it so as not to sully their reputation as a good Democrat. And any one who believes in “polls”(Hmm, a 1000 “RANDOM” people surveyed that reflects the whole nation within a 3 to 4 percent error margin) give me a break. We also need to some how push for national referdums on our ballot and really find out how Americans feel about issues such as our complicated tax system(either a flat tax rate applicable to everybody or a national sales tax, all with a heavy oversight to keep businesses and individuals from cheating(have to find something for those guys at the IRS to do).

I find it interesting that McCain is the only one of the two that feels a sense of responsibility to actually fulfill his current JOB responsibilities, as Senator. Arizona elected him to look out for their interests in Washington, and he apparently takes that responsibility seriously.
I hope that the State of Illinois likes Dick Durbin, because he’s all they’ve got right now. Obama has moved on to “more important things”, like yapping sound bites in a meaningless “debate” instead of getting his butt back to Washington to do the job he was elected to do.
I basically hate the Presidential debates, because they are seldom “debates”, where the participants actually get to ARGUE pros and cons over issues. They’re more a chance for the candidates to get on their soapbox and pontificate. Watch closely, if the debates go on, and see how many of them actually answer the question. Most of them take the opportunity to get their sound bites in first, and then they’ll throw a few unoffending words at the question. It makes ‘em look as though they didn’t even hear the question.
Stupid.

Palin: We have trade missions back and forth, we do. It’s very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia. As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It’s Alaska. It’s just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there, they are right next to our state.

Folks, you can fuss if you want, but McCains handlers are continually out foxing Obama’s think tank. The elections are a big game, a serious game and nothing more! All moves are chosen to accomplish a desired outcome.I for one want the smartest people, best gamers representing my interests not only in the US, but also on the world stage. Our most sucessful Presidents have been the master’s of the game! That’s a fact.

I disagree that McCain’s handlers are out foxing Obama’s think tank. The difference between McCain and Obama is that Obama actually makes the final decision when it comes to the campaign and does not rely on someone else to tell him what to do.
Secondly, I think it is apparent to the logical folks of the world that while the financial crisis is a priority, McCain is just plain scared of it. As Obama stated the President must be able to multi-task. I can imagine that any conversation the President is engaged in, at any time during the day, is interrupted with a whole new different problem. It takes immediate decision skills to prioritize the issues, the intelligence Obama is blessed to have. I make that statement under the illusion the President had only three situtations to ponder - not true.
McCain’s continuous excuses of why the debate should be postponed is as clear as the nose on your face. McCain thinks the American public is to dumb to see the forest for the trees. We’re not, we’re just not dumb enough to buy into your debate postponement propoganda.
As far as suspending his campaign, McCain on the surface said the words, but Palin has continued her jaunt around the country and giving interviews - that’s not suspending a campaign, that’s having your VP nominee doing the campaigning for you. So, McCain never suspended his campaign, never stopped the calls, never stopped raising money, etc. That’s just plain false.

So now there will actually be a debate. A function decided by McCain. One up for McCain; McCain wasn’t, “just a phone call away”. Two up for McCain. McCain isn’t just an , “on the surface” communicator. He exhibits depth and cunning. Exactly the traits we need in a leader. Glad to see that you agree, lucylou. Three up McCain!

Questionable loans to Illegal Aliens as demanded by Democrats sunk a number of greedy spineless bankers; there is NO EXCUSE FOR AMERICAN CITIZEN TAXPAYERS TO SUPPORT THIS SELL-OUT PROPOSED BY MR BUSH AND MR PAULSON WHICH BENEFITS only GOLDMAN-SACHS. Those who made the mess have to clean up after their own selves - isn’t that what you learned from your own Mother?

Obama supporters are overplaying their (weak) hand by claiming that McCain didn’t want to debate. Bad, bad lie because it’s so obviously false: Obama is the one two cowardly and self-absorbed to accept invitations at town halls, because there he might have to actually say something of substance.
Also, Obama is known as the lousy debater, because he doesn’t function well without a teleprompter, a speech writer, and an adoring crowd.
I am have always voted Democrat, but I will never, ever vote for that phony celeb, Obama.

Obama is the one afraid of debating. He was just like the kid who crammed for a big test and all upset because he would forget the answers of the debate were delayed!! LOL, Obama is such an empty suit, he makes Bush look smart!

How can Obama be bipartisan and work across the aisle if he is solely representing the the dem’s views - ie Pelossi, Dodd etc? Hilaary and McCain are the only true moderates, and since the dems did not follow the will of the people, by nominating Obama, my vote goes to McCain.

Oh sure you were going to vote Dem, until……. Obama got more votes than Hilary that is called “the will of the people,” unless you happen to be named George Bush, and the votes are not-counted in Florida. Get over it, and cast your vote but don’t pedal this “bipartisan” BS.
A repub President’s bill was rejected by Repub House members - make up your mind and Dems can work with you.
McCain’s white horse must be tired circling the Capitol waiting for a photo-op. Shameless political stunt he added nothing to this discourse.
