Petroleum exec says governor should cancel Georgia-Alabama football game to save gas

In an op-ed piece on Wednesday in the AJC, Tex Pitfield, president and CEO of Saraguay Petroleum in Atlanta, said Gov. Sonny Perdue ignored a warning from Pitfield to invoke gasoline rationing well before Hurricane Ike struck the Texas coast and its refineries.

Pitfield had another suggestion today.

In a radio interview, the petroleum company chief said he’d advise Perdue to cancel Saturday’s game Georgia-Alabama, to prevent the burning of the precious gasoline required to move a hundred thousand and more people into Athens and out again.

The business executive, obviously not a Perdue fan, also takes a shot at the governor for leaving on a trade mission to Europe on Saturday. (Which means he’ll miss a tremendous game.)

You Bulldogs can rest easy. The game will go on. But you might want to make sure the tank is full before you set out for nirvana.

“The governor is not going to consider a ridiculous idea like this,” Perdue spokesman Bert Brantley said late Thursday. “We’re also not going to stop living our lives. People understand there are common-sense things they can do.”

Watching Georgia-Alabama on TV is not one of them.

Tim Bryant, the radio host at WGAU (1340AM) in Athens, was kind enough to send us the sound clip of his interview with Pitfield. Listen to the interview here.

But this is the gist of the exchange:

Bryant: This town explodes on game day weekends. The roads get clogged, people pour in from all corners. What are they going to find when they get here?

Pitfield: If I was governor, I’d cancel the game. That is just a huge amount of gasoline, that this structure, this system, this state cannot handle the expenditure on right now.

That gas needs to be used for people to go to work, and for people to take care of their families. I did the same thing with my tennis team yesterday. I told them that I wasn’t going to start wasting gas to go play tennis.

And I’m sorry. I know I’ve got a target on me right now by a couple hundred thousand football fans. Game should be canceled. People need to stay home…..

Bryant: Our local economy depends so much on the dollars that are generated by that kind of traffic.

Pitfield: I don’t think we have even begun to see the blood on the streets that this is going to produce. I think you’re going to see a number of small gasoline stations fail. I would think you may see some distributors fail.

There’s no question that we’ve already seen a number of transportation companies fail. It’s a far bigger puzzle than just the cost of fuel — but the availability of fuel. People can’t hang on much longer. This is getting really bad.

I’m amazed that the governor of Georgia, who for all intents and purposes, is the president and CEO of a multi-billion-dollar corporation — and the corporation is on its knees. It’s been given the death blow.

And here he is, he’s jetting off to Europe on Saturday with complete abandon.

Obviously the game will be played. But this UGA fan wishes that Perdue and the rest of the people who run state government had gotten behind the “Brain Train” several years ago (better late than never). The biggest number of people comes from the Atlanta area to Athens, and back. The Brain Train will run from Downtown Atlanta, through Emory, through Gwinnett, and on to Athens (about 6 stops total). On game days, extra cars could be added, trains could run on a special schedule - and thousands of fans (including some drunks) - would be off the road for most of the distance.

This man is a loon! He’s going to ask a Govenor to stop a NCAA football game and single out the GA Bama game! What about all of the other events happening in Atlanta and the State for that matter? He would have been better off asking Sonny to mandate that we all HAVE to stay home this weekend. How silly to pick the game to make his point…

Those same gas stations that are going out of business because of the gas need the revenue from beer/soda/food sales that game day in Athens brings! Nice one sided opinion.

They should have named it the Lame Brain Train. If ga. fans want a train to ride to Athens, take up a collection at your games and PAY for it. Don’t saddle taxpayers who could care less about u of ga.with the cost of this stupid idea. Also, if you believe the “gas shortage” and higher prices are about anything other than profiteering you probably went to lame-brain U.

I recently had to travel to Alabama for business. They ARE N OT in the middle of a gas shortage, and as of two days ago, all the gas stations in Alabama had plenty of gas and the price was $3.55/gallon. So, why is it $.50-.80 more just over the state line? And why are the citizens of Ga having to beg or the gas? Wake up Sonny, what happened to your campaign slogan “Sorry Cares”, sure haven’t seen that.

Maybe Mr. Pitfield would like to explain how when the oil price goes up a dollar, the gas price jumps 10 cents, but when the oil price drops, the gas price remains the same or only drops a penney. Or how about a shot at this one, gas is cheaper in other parts of the state and they have gas, but in Atlanta where there is a station on every corner, we have the highest prices and no gas. I asked the clerk at QT when they would start wearing mask and holding guns on the customers, because the oil companies and gas station owners are robbing the people.

If the game was canceled, a lot of the people who would otherwise stay home and watch television will hop in their car and drive somewhere for a their Saturday night entertainment. The net effect would likely be to use more gas, rather than less.

It’s funny that the distributors and station onwners always say they make less than one cent per gallon on gas sales. If a station sold a million gallons, enough to fill 50,000 cars, that is only $10,000. If their business fails after two weeks and only 10 grand then something is fundamentally wrong with the business. (How many stations could actually handle 50,000 cars in two weeks?)

The reality is, of course the game will be full, but a lot of fans who would normally come will not come for precisely this reason. My parents, who live in southeastern Georgia will not come for fear of not being able to get back home. The folks who live close enough to get to Athens and back home on one tank will be the ones coming. That said, Mr. Pitfield you are an obvious yankee (Tex or no Tex). Go back to your yankee state. College football is way more important in the south than a few gas stations, and for that matter, if we run out of gas we’ll just deal with it. Hell, maybe I’ll get to have a day of next week.

We need to also ask ourselves the question: Where were the wise recommendations from the state representatives and state senators in the metro area — especially those who were in office following Katrina— to call for action (i.e., waiver on Boutique gas; limits on fill ups; car pooling; etc)? Think that they are just about as worthless as actions taken (NOT) by Sonny!! Just how stupid do these politicians take us for?? SURE HOPE WE REMEMBER THEM ALL ON NOVEMBER 4, 2008!!

The Brain Train is a commuter rail line, and would take a lot of cars off the road every day. The benefits on game day are just a bonus.

Most economists believe gas prices will be high for several years, due to rising world demand. What we can do here in the US to increase supply is small change compared to the increased demand coming from China, India, etc. Over the next decade, widespread use of hybrid engines could make a big difference; increased transit alternatives would help as well. Most Georgians get this, and even Perdue has come around.

Once again: Tex Pittfield is the same guy who appeared on TV a few days after Ike and said, essentially, don’t panic, there’s plenty of gas and it’s coming down the pipe. At that time he said nothing about the letter he wrote on Sept. 11th and had no dire warnings after the hurricane. Why sound the alarm bells now? It couldn’t be that he upset the wrong person and can’t get any supply for his drivers is it? That would be underhanded and everyone can see how above board everyone is about this whole thing.

People in Athens and all the points in between Athens and Atlanta have been advocating for commuter rail since the early 1990s but nobody from the state of federal government wanted to stick their necks out. Now every county along Ga. 316 has air quality problems due to automobile and truck exhaust when people could be moving by light rail instead.

We spend hundreds of millions expanding highways and dealing with the associated costs of a car-based culture and then balk at spending a comparative pittance to establish rail service because it “can’t be supported by ticket sales.” Got news for you, boneheads. One way or another, you wind up spending the money. Spend it on rail or spend it on asphalt and asthma medicine — your choice.

My advice: Don’t spend our tax money supporting last century’s transportation model. Start thinking ahead! Build a commuter rail system for Georgia before it’s too late!

I was out in Tempe last week for the UGA-ASU game. I noticed gas was about $3.39/gallon and no panic or waiting lines. Everybody had plenty. Why is our gas in Georgia $.60 higher? State taxes? Why are we in a panic when other states are not? I would think it closer to ship gas from the New Orleans gulf area to Atlanta over Phoenix? Why is our’s higher and scarce?

And what LEGAL authority does a Governor have to cancel a college footbal game anway? If that was true he could do just about anything he wanted in the state. In that case, Perdue should send the National Gaurd instead to Lake Lanier and take control of the dam from the “Feds” and stop wasting all the water. Now that would be something.

I love the ignorance of people who think commuter rail would be a unique burden on taxpayers. Do you really think that none of your general tax dollars go to support our highway infrastructure and your driving addiction? The gas tax doesn’t even come close to covering the cost. Highways are both socialized (free for all, regardless of peak or non-peak hours) and subsidized.

I’m a libertarian-leaning conservative, and given that a) no transportation infrastructure does any better than breakeven, at best, and b) the efficiency of rail (moving more people on a gallon of fuel than nearly anything else, and yes, car addicts, that also takes traffic off your precious roads) plus c) the environmental benefits of other modes besides driving, an Athens-Atlanta commuter line is an AMAZINGLY good idea.

Too bad we won’t have it for this week’s game… or even next year’s game. We deserve what we’re about to get for our lack of foresight.

I’ve never heard of this guy or his company, but judging from his comments he’s an idiot and if his company is struggling, perhaps he should look in the mirror for who to blame, rather than a football game. I live in Tallahassee where we had a similar gas shortage two weeks ago. The difference is our governor and attorney general immediately sprung to action by first assuring drivers there was plenty of gas and then subpoening oil companies and distributers who were jacking up the price of gas for no good reason. Gas prices are now back to normal and there are no lines at any stations.

It strange that the problems in the refineries only effect the Atlanta area. Also the news noted that the foreign maket were up right after the hurricane since there was so little damage, almost none. Make me wonder how big oil can put such a spin on the topic and RAISE prices.

I am a life-long Republican and generally a fan of the Gov. However, he is clueless on this gas situation. There is NOT ample supply in the state - certainly not where I live. My colleagues and I have had to cancel business meetings because no one can get gas. I did travel from Woodstock to Atlanta today and counted 3 of 12 stations that had gas. Lines were crazy long.

The headline of this article is misleading. Pitfield is not a “petroleum executive”. He’s the owner of a small 18-tractor truck line that happens to specialize in hauling fuel. He’s a ne’er do well Canadian that moved south and used family money to set up his small truck line. He’s also, as noted, involved in liberal causes and Democratic politics. So, he knows nothing of football or the petroleum industry.

The shortage in Atlanta is caused by the type of gas we are required to use - the “less dirty” burning kind. Now that the EPA has lifted that restriction, we should have gas back in our stations.

If they could find a way to power the state of Georgia with idiocy then the UGA fanbase could single handedly solve our energy issues.

Bravo. Now that is rich. Sonny says we have ample gas, plenty of water, and I’m taking 20+ of my friends on a taxpayer paid European tour. Add that to, “we disapprove of GWB, but we will vote for the old white man” and “let’s take money from the public schools and give it to the folks who want the state to pay for their kids private schools” and you can understand why GA is 48th challenging for 50th

Light rail to Athens? Who’s gonna pay for it? How many will ride it? Light rail is a fixed entity and would require riders to converge in downtown ATL or…?… Buses are the answer. Set up park-ride lots in different parts of metro ATL and maybe east of Lawrenceville. Buses can be added/removed from service as need dictates. A train would run one route; whether empty or partially loaded. Anyway, the idea of canceling the game is ludicrous. Sonny is shortsighted and cares only for ‘development at all cost’. Alabamer is loving all the tax breaks KIA is getting from GA for its new plant near West Point, while almost all the workers will live in ALA and spend their paychecks in ALA. Meanwhile, we’ve clear-cut 100’s of acres, expanded the infrastructure, etc. Brilliant. Jet off to Europe, Sonny; and maybe we can build another plant at another of our state lines; to the benefit of the other state. Brilliant.

I’m still confused about why this guy thinks that Sonny can cancel the game. How does that work- is it because UGA is a public institution? You might be interested to know that the train from Atlanta to Athens was proposed approx. 20 years ago as part of a “light rail” system to link outlying towns within close proximity to Atlanta. At that time, the goal was to provide greater access for those who commute to Atlanta to work. Given the clogged roads in and around Atlanta and surrounding metro areas on ANY day, seems more “lame brained” not to have build the rail to me.

I’ll say Go Jackets, but this is a stupid comment for the exec. We aren’t in a gas crisis…there is 80% of the normal amount of gas in the city; it is just that everyone is filling up every day which leads to stations running out and long lines. On a normal day, only 1/3 of the gas in Atlanta is at a station, 2/3 are in car gas tanks. People need to stop being paranoid. It is the media’s fault!

Anything Purdue can do about the situation can be done by phone and teleconference from anywhere in the world. In the same breath he talks about failing companies and complains about Purdue’s efforts to bring more businesses to Georgia. With geniuses like this in charge of the fuel supply its no wonder we are running out. And as if that isn’t enough, he wants to cancel the game??? It is an Atlanta area problem and the governor refuses to take a leadership role. In stead he choses to give us trivial sound bites like “don’t panic, all is well”. Sounds like Kevin Bacon at the parade in the closing scenes of Animal House.

Well the good news is the governor is leaving the state and going to Spain so he can’t say anything else stupid.

Maybe Mr.Pitfield could donate his yearly profit sharing from his company to the state of Georgia and then we would probably not be in this mess!

Anyone with a brain knows that these ‘little stations’ don’t make their revenue on Gas anyway; they make it on the ‘convenience’ factor of food, drinks, etc. In fact, since the price of gas has risen so high, there is actually a LOWER profit on Gas NOW than when it was $185/gal!! Hence the reason Exxon is trying to sell off their corporate owned stations because of low profit margins. This guy is just another example of a sore-loser Democrat that blames everything on someone else. Maybe this Michael Moore twin should look in the mirror.

While I recognize that the AJC is not a completely credible source of information relative to much of anything, I am appaled to learn that our “Governor” is leaving the state (and the country for that matter) during a significant crisis. A good CEO never leaves his “company” in difficult times.

This is all ridiculous. Those of us that went to Arizona found plentiful gas and at prices or 3.39-3.59. The same gas. Why is GA the only state with a crisis? And they wonder why we think it makes no sense. We should all conserve, but when everthing they tell us appears bogus, where is the real incentive. By their own actions, they “appear” to only want to line their pockets………but we still need Sonny GONE.

I soent last weekend in in South Carolina, up and down the coast. Gas prices were around $3.67 to $3.77 without line and bags over pumps. It’s kinda hard to beliebe that they have gas througout the entire state yet Georgia has a gas shortage. If there is a shortage ok there is but really I don’t think s. If they are rationing it out then just say so!!! Yet what is really funny is that Perdue said by the end of the week this issue would be getting better. It’s the end of the week so I guess it’s better casue he got enough gas to fly to Europe. Gas Shortage…ok if you say so. The reason only certain stations have gas is because they can afford it or near a major interstate…duh.

Have ya’ll bothered to google this guy’s company? It’s not a petroleum company, its a mom and pop trucking company that delivers gas to local stations. They only have a handful of trucks. Why is a station even bothering to interview this guy, he aparently knows nothing about what’s really going on, only that his company is struggling. I’d say ignore this idiot and the station that chose to interview this clown instead of people who really know what’s going on.

Perhaps Gov Perdue should go on down to Paraguay and rest up with his buddy George Bush on Bush’s new 90,000 acre “get-a-way”? (or should that be “HIDE A WAY”).

Perdue could take his a*-kissing friend Saxby with him .

I work in extreme Northeast Alabama and live in extreme Northwest Georgia. My commute is about 30 miles, with one stop light. Georgia’s gas, especially Atlanta, has additives to help with the smog from all of the commuters. That might explain the shortage around that area. But for anyone to say that we’ve got plenty of gas in ‘Bama is stupid. Every station in our little town is out. The idiot fan will still get on the road with his SUV to tailgate, get drunk, not remember the game, and stagger home, possibly killing a few innocents on the way. I don’t understand the mentality. Of course, when I went to GSU we didn’t have football. My son attends Auburn, and can’t get tickets to the game because of all of the blue hair alumni that “just have to be there”. He can hear the game from his dorm, but there are no tickets, unless he’s willing to pay over face value. It’s time for the “boomers” to grow up. I predict thousands of SUV’s on the side of the highway out of gas this weekend. Maybe they should save some of the barbecue and beer for AFTER the game!! Be responsible, stay home, watch the game on TV, save money on beer and gasoline!

I know, no way that will ever happen.

Sonny Perdue is a worthless piece of excrement, He has consistently gotten richer while serving as Governor while the majority of Georgians have gotten poorer. Now he has the gall to take a European vacation at state expense while every state agency is having to cut back. It’s gotten so bad that Public safety vehicles are on the road with over 200,000 miles on them. Sonny needs to get his head out of his a* and Govern like he was elected to do. He is by far the worse Governer the state of Georgia ever had.

Pitfield is an ex-petroleum truck driver who started his own hauling company. He has no supply nor does he even sell gas, he just delivers it for distributors. He just tries to make people believe he’s a big shot.

You guys are proving my point that the only purpose of the Brain Train is to subsidize transportation for UGA fans so they can drink as much as they want at the game and not have to face a DUI. No thank you - I don’t wish to have my tax dollars pay for your convenience. If the Brain Train is such a great idea, have a private company start a daily bus system between Athens and Atlanta. If it can make money on its own without public assistance, then go ahead with the Brain Train - also owned and operated by a private firm with no public dollars. But my guess is that there is only enough demand for Athens-Atlanta mass transportation during football season.

“That’s probably the dumbest, most short-sighted comment I’ve heard all year by anyone. …and this guy is an executive of an oil distributor? No wonder there are supply problems if he’s runnning the logisitics program.”

I’ll bet on the list of most “short-sighted comments” the bottle-rocket scientist (i.e., UGA fan) who made this comment above will be wishing he DIDNN’T waste a week’s worth of fuel traveling to Athens for a resounding rear-end kicking.

But…how typical of UGA folks…the cannot live past a day without thinking of football.

All you morons who said Tex as wrong, fu˘k YOU, you idiots, keep buying your made in china crap and topping off your big a$$ suvs, and continue to hunt for imported gas and wait in long lines, serves you right for allowing your government to allow us to become so dependent on a substance that would eventually run out, and to top it off our enemies have the most control over it. No one except Brazil (and the foreign auto makers) learned a damn thing from the oil embargo of the 70s.

Some people keep saying “well, lower the gas prices.” That is a geat idea except for the fact that there is non to be had! Even if gas was $1, there is just no gas around.

I agree with the guy in the article, but maybe cancelling the game is extreme. I would have just warned people that if they come to Athens, don’t expect to fill up.
