Dear Sonny: Please remember that story about George Busbee

Should any disaster hit Georgia, Gov. Sonny Perdue can now fly his own helicopter to survey the damage. He’s now certified to pilot the craft himself.

This report has been posted on the web site operated by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association:

The second-term Republican recently added private helicopter privileges to his pilot certificate. The governor already held a commercial airplane certificate with single- and multiengine ratings. Having started flying in his youth, he now has more than 2,800 total hours…

Perdue, 61, did his training in a Robinson R44 at Blue Ridge Helicopters, Inc. in Lawrenceville, Ga. He used his vacation time to satisfy the solo requirements.

Sixty-six hours were required, says the report.

What is the story about George Busbee?

Glad you asked, Ed. Here’s a line from Gov. George Busbee’s obituary in 2004:

Busbee also had an adventurous side. He once crash-landed a state helicopter on Sapelo Island while he was trying to learn to fly it. He was much prouder of having once been allowed to take the controls of a B-747 and landing the massive aircraft.

G. Busbee and my grandfather were childhood friends. They grew up in Albany right next door to each other. Some of the Busbee stories I have heard are great! The man was a real character. That is probably why he and and my granddad got along so well for so long.

For all you mamby pamby Democrats: It is better to have tried and failed, than never to have tried at all.

God Bless George Busbee. Georgia’s last true real leader. Who cares if he crash landed a helicopter? At least the man tried.
