Democrats ready to unload on McCain, Reed over Atlanta fund-raiser
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The signs are unmistakable. Democrats are about to unload on Republican presidential candidate John McCain — and the upcoming Atlanta event that Ralph Reed is helping to boost.
Today’s The Hill, a newspaper that covers Congress, notes that McCain has thus far ignored calls to cancel the fund-raiser from “watchdog groups” who note Reed’s former association with imprisoned lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
An investigation driven by McCain, as chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, uncovered much of the relationship.
But Democrats are no longer much impressed. This paragraph is from the Hill:
“Calling yourself a maverick and claiming credit for fighting corruption while raising money with one of the central figures in the Jack Abramoff corruption scandal is not what most voters have in mind when they think of ‘straight talk,’” said Damien LaVera, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee. “It is, however, one more example of why John McCain is offering more of the same failed Republican leadership.”
A statement just released this morning, again from Democratic National Committee and its chairman Howard Dean, is even stronger — and calls McCain’s 2006 investigation of corruption less than thorough.
“Despite his shady ties to Abramoff, McCain never called Reed to testify before his committee. In fact, despite acknowledging wrongdoing among his colleagues, McCain refused to investigate fellow Republicans in Congress,” the press release states.
Says Dean:
“John McCain’s decision to cozy up to one of the central figures in the Republican culture of corruption shows how far HE IS is willing to go to win. Despite all of his rhetoric about reform, McCain’s willingness to accept tainted money raised by tainted Abramoff cronies like Ralph Reed shows that McCain simply cannot be trusted to bring change to Washington politics. A maverick no more, the John McCain of 2000 wouldn’t even consider voting for the John McCain of 2008.”
In the Hill article, an RNC official noted that Reed’s name is not on the official invitation to the event, which will be held at the downtown Atlanta Marriott Marquis. But the official would not confirm whether Reed is a member of the McCain 2008 Victory Team, as Reed told supporters last week in an e-mail.
On Tuesday, Reed told my AJC colleague Aaron Sheinin:
“I’m strongly supporting Senator McCain because he’s advocating conservative positions on taxes, judges, energy, strengthening the family and common sense values. I have great respect for his service to the country.
“I sent that e-mail out in my capacity as a private citizen. I don’t hold any position or title with the McCain campaign, haven’t sought one, don’t want one.”
Update: An interview with Reed by the Wall Street Journal produced this:
“You know, I’ve had differences in the past with Sen. McCain but frankly those pale into insignificance compared with the stark differences between these two nominees and what is at stake in this election,” Reed said in a phone interview.
When asked about his past differences with McCain, Reed offered this explanation: “I take the long view of politics and I’ve found that yesterday’s opponent may well be tomorrow’s friend or ally and I’ve certainly found that to be the case with Sen. McCain.”

WOW! some maverick McCain is. But i guess this is what you will have to do when your opponent is raising $50m a month and has well over 2 million “small” donors.
McCain is proving he is no different than Hillary Clinton and that is …he is willing to do whatever it takes to win/buy the presidency

OCB flubed the name of Georgian President three times. OCB’s people say he and the Georgian leader rode jet skis together” OCB even nominated Saakashvili for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. But in a speech yesterday, McCain mispronounced his name three times!!!!!!

The Democrats are really stretching things to make this guilt by association. Reed, head of the Christian Coalition once worked with Abramoff. Reed emails his support of McCain. Therefore McCain is corrupt? Obama’s former association with corrupt and racist people is evidently ok.

This guy hasn’t been charged with any crime. This is still America isn’t it? Just because the Democrats or the AJC say someone is “involved” in corruption doesn’t make it true. Come on people, do a little thinking for yourself here. The liberal media can infer shady dealings and corruption all they want, but the Democrats control the House and the Senate, and if they wanted to investigate something they have ample means to do so. If this guy was a real crook, he would be in jail right now, or at least be under investigation by someone.

How can ANYBODY possibly consider Mccain as a viable presidentital candidate? There is NOTHING about Mccain that is presidential. The man is old, gray, stiff, and quite frankly, boring as hell. In this day and age of global economic problems and need for international alliances, America will be FAR BETTER represented in the eyes of the world by Obama than by Mccain. America needs all the help it can get to pull itself out of the quagmire mostly created by Bush…Mccain is just more of the same digging a deeper hole

McCain is in so deep with every lobbyist group in the world that he couldn’t have an original thought even if he wanted to. Corruption runs so deep in Washington and it is insane to think we need one of those in the middle of it all to run it all.
Also recognize that McCain only knows war and war create opportunity for wealth .. not for you and I, but for those who support McCain.
Even the recent conflict in Georgia brought to light that McCain’s top foreign affairs adviser is a paid lobbyist for Georgia. Making $800,000 in exchange for getting access to McCain in order to get Washington to supply the country with military weapons and training so they could attack Russia, and also getting the US to help them join NATO so they could taunt Russia with provocation and then ask the world (meaning the US) to protect them. In addition, McCain was pushing for a $10,000,000 grant to Georgia which was earmarked to pay lobbyists (McCains advisers) to help them obtain more military strength through NATO. What a gig!
McCain is directly responsible in part for the current Georgia-Russia conflict!! ha ha
His entire staff are lobbyist’s who are representing the interests of others … not the US. Everything from oil to the governments of other countries.
Haven’t we had enough of this?

Same old crap from both parties, isn’t it time to think about America first and all of the poor people. Our country continues to be divided because of the crap like this. McCann and Obama should work as Americans to stop this crap. Who is willing to do whats best for all of us. Join forces, McCann or Obama should volunteer to be VP and the other President and bring America back together and solve the problems we have!!!!! Don’t make them worse!!!!

Might as well let Jack Keating hold a fundraiser too. Maybe even Ted Stevens. McCain’s only hope is that some Americans are bigoted enough to vote for warmongering, demented, naturalized citizen of Panama, over a proven world leader with a vision for our future. What significant accomplishment has McCain achieved i his three decades in Congress? Other than scandalous perks for his cronies!

its not as easy as you think to just investigate a political official in the US. How do you think the American public would react if the democrats just said, “we are going to investigate mccain for being connected to lobbyists.” All of the conservatives would just say they are doing that to taint the election.
Investigate Bush first. Which certainly won’t happen if your beloved McCain gets into office.
let McCain and Obama debate and the American public will see who is really smarter. McCain reads everything off of paper / teleprompter while Obama improv’d most of his primary speeches.

You know, I don’t understand how McCain can say that he is going to change and improve everything for the better because the last eight years have been so hard on Americans. If he has all of these “great ideas” then why in the hell isn’t the party that he is affiliated with doing anything RIGHT NOW since his party is currently occupying the White House!!!
McCain, WHY ISN’T YOUR PARTY DOING ANYTHING RIGHT NOW WHILE IN OFFICE???!!!
WHY DO WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL YOU GET IN IF YOUR IDEAS ARE SO GREAT. HUH???
WHY ISN’T YOUR PARTY DOING ANYTHING RIGHT NOW WHILE IN OFFICE???!!!
I’ll tell you why, because you’ll say or do anything to get in and forget everything you promised once in.

I’m glad Reed supports McCain. They are both good people. What concerns me is Obama and his 20-year intimate relationship with racist mentor Reverend Wright. I think Obama is a closet racist who can’t speak without a teleprompter. Furthermore, if you want to know why the Atanta Journal Constitution is laying off people faster than Bill Clinton and John Edwards can lie about their affairs, liberal bias is the answer.

I hate to tell you this but there are many people in the White House and buddies of the White House that should be in Jail right now. Including our President and VP. But they just wave their wand of BS and say nope they do not need to go to jail for torture or outing a CIA agent. None of these things are justifiable. You talk about Crooks. There was a time when I admired what I believed was Sen. McCain’s independence and political courage, but it’s now obvious that these were either a carefully crafted image, or values that matter less to him than winning an election. Ralph Reed was shown in the Abramoff scandal to be among the most cynical and dishonest of operatives, appealing to the deeply felt convictions of conservative religious voters to advance a dubious political agenda. For McCain to ally with Reed adds more tarnish to McCain’s image.

Its time for a change. We can’t survive a Bush 3rd term AKA McCain. “The biggest celebrity in the world” is such because the rest of the world sees his brilliance, intelligence and ability to unite this country and planet. The GOP keeps talking about taxes as their main defense. Anyone remember when taxes were highest? Bill Clinton? Ironically, thats when our economy was in the best shape as well. Elect Obama, and we’ll be on the verge of another boom - but this time it’ll be renewable energy. Elect McCain, and we’ll be at war with multiple countries for years to come.

The only solid policy the Republican seem to offer is lie, cheat, and steal. How many no-bid contracts for billions of dollars must one send to their “former” employer to get investigated? How many fund-raising scandals must a Senator from Arizona get implicated in before everyone knows he’s corrupt? Remember McCain was one of the Keating Five, the beginning of the savings and loan scandal/crisis under Reagan, and he’s been regularly implicated in irregular fund-raising every few years since. His wife got addicted to pain pills she was stealing from her non-profit charity! McCain=CORRUPT!!

Hilarious. You people are out here loosing your homes, barely keeping your jobs and making life decisions at the gas pump and you think Mcbain is the answer. He will only continue your suffering. As far as this War goes; didn’t George sit on your Tush Bush land on THE USS Lincoln and claim “mission accomplished”. So what war are we talking about?? shouldn’t they have packed up and come home if this was so. That was a poor assessment and only the beginning. I find stupidity impressive and love how you label someone anti- American if they don’t wish to see their neighbor’s kid or their own die in the desert. If some of you are so Patriotic, hop your sorry a* up and go fight. You won’t do that but you think someone else should. Your anti–American with that. Leaving Iraq isn’t retreating. It’s leaving and making them pay their own bills and spill their own blood. As for the dip who said, “all the terrorists are inside Iraq,” where are you from?? You actually think the “terrorist” aren’t here??? .it is not our job to institute regime change. Governments have been overthrown before so let them make their own changes to their rulers. This country was in no threat from Iraq. Hell they couldn’t beat Iran who was across the border ,now how were they going to threaten us…with Scuds?? ..That’s a joke and not one WMD was found which one of the top reasons. I’m sure some of you voted for Buck shot George (who isn’t talking so cowboy these days) with out doubt but please do not vote for anything like that again. It’s obvious your judgment has limits. So stop making decision for America if you will…

Republicans have “used” Christians for a generation. Why should they stop now?
Christ tells us to feed the hungry. Republicans have cut back, and in some cases completely closed, programs to feed the hungry. Christ tells us to house the homeless. Republicans have cut back on housing programs, caused the prices of homes to skyrocket, and put millions of people out on the street. Republican policies have caused millions of people to lose jobs.
Ralph Reed isn’t a Christian. Not by any definition that I can accept. He is a wolf in sheeps clothing — Claiming to be Christian, but actually working for the other side.
McCain is continuing to work for the same things that his party has worked for: helping the rich, and harming the middle class and the poor. He does this by making more people homeless and hungry; increasing prices for food, clothing and shelter; reducing middle-class wages, and exporting factories and jobs.

I love it…more of this faith-based mumbo jumbo will trap weak-minded individuals…just like gov. jesse ventura said: religion is a crutch for weak-minded folks…
also, if you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything…
dubya has been hoodwinking all of us for eight years, clinton got a bj and got impeached, so bush treated this whole country like his personal piggybank is not as immoral apparently….bush said he was “on a mission from god” to attack a sovereign nation and murder innocents…anyone who is baptised christian, and from everything in scripture, and from any other religion around the world, NEVER do they advocate using religion for personal gain or revenge, I refuse to believe this….both sides in this election have racist preachers…..and after bush, anything “religious” is tainted….having morals and ethiscs is more important….mcbush has shown repeatedly he has neither….
Siphoning money off for “faith based values” is wrong….people need to set aside their bias a little and wake up….or “christian” will rightly have bad connotation around the world for a long time to come……
NOBODY around the world from any major religion EVER attacked us….all hijackers, furthermore, were from saudi arabia, none of the other stuff ever happened, i.e. secret meetings between al qaeda and iragi intelligence, ALL OF IT was fabricated and IT HAS BEEN PROVEN….if this is not material for impeachment, you might as well shred our whole constitution and start over….that is what bush is doing….mcbush will just continue more of the same…he verbally abuses his wife, hates others….he is not a “christian” in deed, so why trust his word????
why haven’t other preachers chimed in re: the discrepancy between mccain talking the talking and walking the walk….as well as false deities…etc…bush thinking he is god means he is actually a very evil person…..

John, We all know that Bush, Chaney, Rumsfeld and lets not forget Scooter along with many others should also be in jail along side Abramoff for much more serious crimes than corruption. Just so you get it the Democrats do control only the House not the Senate. You can only control the Senate if you have a super majority 61 Democrats. Republicans and Connecticut’s Senior Gnome are still lined up behind W and your candidate Elmer Fud and continue to block legislation that would upset their special interest lobbyists who stuff their pockets with cash. Republicans ran their presidential election based on the need to change Washington. Congratulations John the Republicans changed it alright. It went from pretty damn good times to nothing more than a primal chest beating second-rate oligarchy (I’m being kind here) then straight in to the crapper. Like all Republicans told me after W stole the election “get over it”. Hang on John I will be telling you the same thing come November.

as a limited government conservative, I say a pox on both houses. both republicrats and demoblicans are two sides of the same coin, only focused on increasing power and intrusion of government into every aspect of our lives. the last several years should make it appparent to every american that reps and dems alike are all part of the same agenda - growing government and limiting individual freedoms. there must be a better way, and we american citizens better be looking for it with new eyes before our so-called ‘representatives’ make it impossible to do so.

Ralph Reed, Get your hand on the documentary that air on PBS few weeks ago and you see what monster Ralph Reed is.
people like him are poisness to our nation. Even Jack Abramof who had many dirty dealings with him was fearful of Ralph Reed.

Has Ralph Reed been convicted of a crlme? Has he admitted to being a terrorist? Is he on the committee? It seems that Obama has been a friend for a number of years of someone who does qualify for at least to one of the above.

To Raul,
How can Hillary be the chosen one when she ran a campaign that was debt ridden. Hillary did not think caucas voting mattered.
Is this a leader of a country. You must be kidding!
We are not going to judge either of these candidates by their associations.
McClain also ran into debt issues and now he wants to add Milt Romney who outspent his opponents by millions and still lost.
So smart American the bottom line is we want a CEO who can run a fiscally smart operation and the only candidate who has done that so far is Mr. Obama.
Their should not be any other conversations about credentials and experience at this point.
We always hire the person who operates with a profit.
This is America baby!
Get with-it haters and join the team so we can get the country back on track!

And here’s the best part … the Obama movement isn’t just for us “kool-aid” drinkers .. it’s for ALL OF AMERICA!!

John well ran campaigns do not have debt issues. Quit making excuses this is like running a business.
How many companies stay in business with a debt issue?
It is amazing the excuses made for some people. I don’t make excuses for Mr. Obama association I see results the man has made which leds me to believe Mr. Obama is organized and brings in smart people for his campaign.
Who cares if he does not read from well from notes. How petty some of you people are.
I just know Mr. McClain has been apart of the problems in Washington and not the solution.
It’t time for a change of new management in America!
It’s amazing a candidate can make statement that he does not know much about the economy after spending 26 years in the senate.
Can a McClain supporter tell what has he been doing?
What a joke!

why does this surprise anyone? everyone knows that he gets all his money from Bush fundraising and lobbyists. Nothing on McCain, if he didnt do it, he wouldnt be able to run a campaign on his own.
funny thing. if anyone saw hannity and colmes last night, then you saw republicans feeding like pirahna off the Edwards story. they said, “if you cant be honest with your own wife, how can you be honest with the American people?” well, i believe this. but its like conservatives just forget that McCain cheated on and left his paralyzed wife who waited for 5 years while he was a POW and stayed truthful with no certainty that her husband would come home. he left her for a beer heiress…cindy. in fact the only way he can afford to be in politics let alone run for president, is because of her fortune. so his adultery is the reason he is in politics. a lot different than Obama’s harvard scholarships, huh? guess you can be 5th from the bottom of your class like McCain and run for president as long as you marry a rich “trollop” and “c*nt” as McCain once called her in front of the press.
jees, if this were Obama’s past, imagine what the Republicans would do…Obama wouldnt even make it to election day…

David, I scored perfect 1600 on my SAT’s at age 14. Graduated top of my class from MIT. Doctorate at Penn. I can tell you standardized tests don’t mean s**t. I’m much more inclined to vote for a Harvard Alumni than someone who graduated 5th from the bottom at the naval academy (tough school!). I’m voting for Obama because I HAVE children, and have lost friends in Iraq. I don’t want my kids to have to fight for another warmonger in Russia.

The republicans werent afraid of swiftboating Kerry’s impressive war record four years ago.

If Obama is for ALL OF AMERICA, why is he only letting SOME OF AMERICA know first who he’s choosing as VP? Why isn’t he letting ALL OF AMERICA in on the decision at the same time via television or newspaper rather than only texting his supporters? This, to me, shows who he really values; only those that think and feel the way he does. “Because of media bias,” is not an adequate answer. He could make the announcement through People magazine who ran a lovely spread on he and his family (roll of eyes) AFTER he publicly regretted allowing media to interview his daughters.
Followthemoney, Don’t blame someone’s lack of support for Obama on racial bias. Maybe some of us are not Obama supporters b/c we disagree with his policies (or lack thereof). Also, we are no longer in the 60’s. He’s a man. Not a movement.

This is for those people who keep bringing Ayers up and trying to besmirch Senator Obama because they know one another are being utterly stupid!! Ayers committed his protests during the VietNam War; he was NEVER charged and NEVER did prison time!! Barack Obama was born in 1962 and was a baby and small child at that time. Tell me, did Baby Obama, Child Obama participate in Ayers activities back in the 1960s?? Your claim by “association” is ridiculous at best. You people cannot find ANYTHING on which to nail Senator Obama so you CREATE garbage! Shame on you!! HIlliary and cohorts couldn’t find anything either; what did they come up with? Barack Obama’s kindergarten papers where he dreamt of being president one day. They claimed Senator Obama ALWAYS aspired to be president, beginning at age five!! How stupid is that of the Clinton gang?? STUPID!! As little children we dream big, dream of being astronauts, superman, doctors, etc., and, yes, even president! Senator Obama is an upstanding and outstanding American citizen and you people appear really silly trying to pin him as otherwise. Get a life and stop your nonsensical and fraudulant claims!

I think when the Dems can assure beyond the shadow of a doubt that all of their money comes from pure sources, they can step up and question McCain on who may be attending one of his fundraisers. With the history the DNC and Dem candidates have of shady bundling, foreign donors, etc. they have no room to talk. This is beyond the pot calling the kettle black here. It’s like OJ Simpson speaking out against domestic violence.
And MIT Alum, if you have children, you should be very concerned about what Obama’s agenda will do for them. His plan drives away jobs, runs the tax burden up, enlarges government to unheard of levels, etc. His plan has no positive effect at all. Now maybe you buy into the whole redistribution of wealth, Marxist bit but frankly I don’t and never want to. I have children as well. I would much rather handle their future than hand over their future to Obama. Nothing he promises will positively benefit them once the bill is paid for. As for fighting for a warmonger in Russia, I don’t want them to die under a weakling who thinks we can rationally discuss peace with the modern equivalent with Hitler. There is nothing worse than watching Americans dying here for failed Democratic utopian, kumbaya policies. There’s nothing worse than letting the same people Barry preached to in Berlin get bullied by the world’s thugs. Sorry, but you can never deal with a thug by peaceful means.

MIT Alum,
Impressive record. However, in case they didn’t cover this at MIT, you’re children won’t have to fight in a war against Russia. Our military is based on voluntary membership. So, unless your children decide that is the path for them, they won’t HAVE to fight for another warmonger in Russia.
I’m very sorry for your friends that have lost their lives in Iraq. I too have friends and family that will not return from this war. But deciding to be at the beck and call of our Commander and Chief was a choice they made after signing the dotted line. That is their duty and job. If you don’t want to go to war, don’t sign up for the military.

Why isn’t the media tellins us how McCain and his cohorts transplanted these gentle people to a near swamp, uranium contamination location where over 2,000 members of this tribe have met with death due to the contamination?? Why isn’t the media telling us how the Dineh Navajo babies are being born with terrible birth defects, the most of anywhere else in the USA!! Why isn’t the media telling us how the Dineh Navajo keep losing their stock duee to water contamination?? Why isn’t the media telling uf of the HUGE profits McCain is making from the Black Gold (Coal) mining?? Come on, do some research on all of this and report on it!! Ralph Reed - former head of the Christian Coalition, PTL and media hungry groupie does in fact stretch the truth. Example: When Ralph Reed was in charge of PTL, a non-profit organization that can not under federal law be affiliated with any political party, stated that PTL nor he were Republican. At the dawn of a political season what does he do, he publicly endorses republican candidates, and then runs for office himself as a republican. He had absolutely no qualifications to be Lt. Governor of Georgia then or now, as a matter of fact, he has no qualifications other than stripping funded monies to American Natives and cohorting about with other folks that are stealing from the likes of you and me. Ralph Reed may have a boyish face but he has deeper roots than any of us know and they are not producing good fruit.

Craig, I agree. Lets send more jobs overseas for less taxes. I love calling India these days to for anytype of customer service. Lets give tax breaks to corporations, and screw the middle class. Lets destroy our planet some more by remaining dependent on oil. Even better, lets fly the all the Saudi Royals out on a f*ing Gulfstream on our dime ($100K to turn that thing on) on Sept 12, 2001! I remember when our taxes were the highest, Bill Clinton days, and when our economy was in its best shape. The theory of relativity can directly related to our tax system. When they are low, incomes are low. When they are high, incomes are high. History has proven this fact. If you don’t believe me, take a look at our current situation. Low taxes - record high foreclosures, bk’s, unemployed. The result of this is a sure thing, crime will increase (already has - especially drug traffic).
McCain’s plan for the housing crisis is to let itself work out, saying that this is cyclical. However, that cycle is 8 years. Thats 8 years of hell for hundreds of thousands of Americans. Bush’s plan was to grant federal funds to Fannie and Freddie and FHA. Those funds will NOT help out the people in need. In order to help those people, they would have to re-write all of the underwriting guidelines and federalize the system (big government!)
Energy: Offshore drilling? We have over 2 million acres in our country that are not being tapped, because of the cost. Instead, lets destroy the oceanic ecosystem by drilling there. Who knows what we’d kill off by doing that - cure for cancer? common cold? polio? The fact is we have the technology to become free of oil dependancy - I’ve devolped one method myself. We just don’t have the funds or desire to make it viable.
Iraq: Lets get the hell out and let them work out their own problems - we have 5 million homeless HERE! We’ve done enough damage over there. Africa is experiencing genocide, but because we don’t have oil interests there no one cares.
Please research some of these topics and use some INDEPENDENT THOUGHT! Make decisions based on accurate facts. I can’t tell you who to vote for…thats one of the greatest things about our country. All I can do is encourage all of you to VOTE! Get your voice heard! That freedom awarded to all of you by our founding fathers is something that you should not take advantage of. However, try to do whats in the best interest for the whole country - not just you! THE GREATER GOOD!

There is a MAJOR HISTORY behind McCain and IT AIN’T PRETTY!!!
Former Vets are opening up that when McCain was a POW, HE SANG LIKE A YELLOW CANARY TO HIS CAPTORS when held as a POW in VIETNAM.
The only reason they treated him so well was because he was so willing to TELL THEM ANYTHING THEY WANTED TO KNOW!!!
WOW, YOU DIDN’T KNOW THAT!!!!!!
WHAT THE HELL KIND OF A WAR HERO IS THAT I ASK YOU…???
Remember when THEY SWIFTBOATED VOLUNTEER’S John Kerry for getting wounded in vietnam and his legless and armless buddies? THEY DIDN’T SHOOT THEMSELVES OR CUT THEIR LIMBS OFF TO GET OUT DID THEY!!! THEY WERE PATRIOTIC VOLUNTEERS.
UNLIKE THE CURRENT UNPATRIOTIC BUNCH OF SO CALLED HEROES!!! OR SO THEY PROPAGANDASUS’S**(SWIFTBOATED) US TO BELIEVE???
p.s. lets try to keep this away from the public eye!!!
**to make people believe in or support that which is absurdly untrue or disbelievable. Also called SWIFTBOATING.

Washington group that monitors campaign finance, called on McCain to cancel the event.
“Senator McCain knows exactly how Ralph Reed helped Jack Abramoff defraud Indian tribes out of tens of millions of dollars,” Campaign Money Watch director David Donnelly said. “Senator McCain should spare himself any further embarrassment by canceling this event immediately.”
Reed’s firm received more than $4 million to rally Christian voters against a casino that competed with Abramoff’s Indian clients.
Although McCain’s committee uncovered much of Abramoff’s shenanigans, McCain never called Reed to testify. Reed was not charged in the subsequent Justice Department investigation, although the scandal helped sink his 2006 bid for the Georgia GOP’s nomination as lieutenant governor.

Alert Readers: please note Reed quickly recanted his e-mail claim to be a part of the Victory 2008 Team, telling the Wall Street Journal he’s “just a run-of-the-mill attendee doing his part.” Whether Reed’s e-mail was a well-intentioned attempt to build support among Christian conservatives, or a cynical play to insinuate himself, grab headlines, and discredit McCain by the association, this is a story by and about Ralph Reed, and “Reed-baiting” by the AJC. Time to get the facts straight: Reed has NO role with the campaign, and is not a host, co-chair or even a major contributor to Monday’s event.
