Martin’s own poll says he’s got a chance

Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss is vulnerable and Democrat Jim Martin is within striking distance, according to a poll circulated by one of Martin’s most important backers, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

The survey of the U.S. Senate race puts Chambliss at 42 percent and Martin at 36 percent. Libertarian Allen Buckley is at 3 percent.

Obviously, polls circulated by the very parties involved need to be taken with a sack of salt. But be aware that this is the document that Martin will be using when he rings up potential donors.

The poll of 600 likely voters, said the DSCC, was taken Aug. 6 to 10 by the Mellman Group and has a 4 percent margin of error.

Likely points of emphasis include a 37 percent job approval rating for Chambliss — well below what non-partisan polls have shown. Sixty-six percent say the country’s on the wrong track.

Not to worry. Saxby’s sizable advertising budget will turn that around, thank GOODNESS! We can’t have a senator looking out for the people who do the living, working, and dying in this state. Saxby looks out for ME, and that’s the way I like it.

i DON’T ABOUT THOSE NUMBERS, BUT I DO THINK THAT MARTIN HAS A LEGITIATE CHANCE OF DEFEATING THIS HACK. MARTIN WILL FIGHT FOR THE MIDLE CLASS & SMALL TOWN VOTERS WHO ARE NOT BEING HEARD.

Polls this early in the race are pretty meaningless. Chambliss for the most part has represented Georgia values pretty well…certainly way better than Max Cleland ever did. I really do hope he drops out of this absurd “Gang of 10” in the senate. The GOP has got a winning issue with drilling for domestic oil and he and his compromise buddies stand to cut the legs out from under the party. I feel pretty confidant Chambliss can compare and contrast his conservative record with that of Martin’s candy assed liberal tract record all the way to win at the finish line in November.

Martin has no chance. Saxby has picked up major support from Georgians over his working across party lines to deal with gas prices. Saxby is a true Statesman.

1.Saxby’s number one priority is to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and bring down the cost of fuel. His proposal to do this includes increasing exploration and drilling for oil in America which will increase our domestic oil supply. Coupled with this is the building of additional refineries.

2.Saxby supports all offshore drilling, drilling in ANWR and capturing the oil shale in the Rocky Mountain States. This offshore drilling agreement is an important first step in that direction. It will allow us to immediately begin drilling for new sources of oil and to open up some older oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico.

3.Saxby is working with both common-sense democrat and republican senators to pass legislation that will allow us to start drilling now. This agreement represents a major breakthrough - it is the first time a group of democrats have agreed to increase offshore drilling. Democrats are in control of the Senate. To have democrat senators defy their own leadership and come to the side of republican law makers is significant. It has put the democrat leadership in a very uncomfortable position and Saxby does not intend to let up until there is a vote on this issue.

4.Saxby supports research and development of alternative fuels, including increased nuclear production.

5.Saxby does not support “windfall taxes” on oil companies or any tax increases that will be passed along to consumers. 6.Saxby is working for a real solution, not political brinksmanship. High gas prices are hurting all Georgians and all Americans. That is why he is engaged in this process.

Martin is a fool. He could commission a poll saying that he has a chance to be the Ambassador to the Court of St. James, but it doesn’t make it true.

The polling firm is the same one that had Martin way up on Jones when he first qualified.

They make up polls based on who pays them the most.

Total crap.

GT College Republican You are pretty confused on Saxby’s position, here is what it is:: This morning on the radio I read EPU’S post, Kevin’s post, and Gamecock’s citation of Texas Ace’s comment.

There is a common trait in each post that Texas Ace sums up quite well.

By caving now, Saxby Shambles and Little Lord Fauntleroy, (as Doc calls him) have bailed them out of their predicament at the exact moment when the Republican party is on the brink of victory. This wouldn’t be so infuriating were it the first time they have done this but it’s not. They always time their capitulation at times that either cause maximum damage to the Republican Party or as in this case…to bail out the Democrats at a time when Republicans are winning!

Rush, in fact, makes a similar point talking with Saxby Chambliss. The GOP is winning on this issue. The Gang of 10 compromise takes away the only issue on which the GOP is winning.

That focus, internally, is okay. But we should also keep in mind that the Gang of 10 compromise harms the national interest even more than it harms the GOP interest.

National Interest vs. the GOP’s Interest There is widespread agreement that the OCS off Florida and California have the largest untapped oil and natural gas reserves. Opening up Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and the Florida Gulf Coast is a canard. Exhibit A is this. Knowledgeable geologists say there is no oil accessible off the Georgia coast, except in a marine reserve that this compromise won’t allow access to. While the Gulf of Mexico reserves off Florida will be accessible, the Atlantic side will not be. We’re already getting a good bit out of the Gulf. We need the Atlantic.

The GOP members of the gang are also happy to yank tax incentives for oil companies that other companies get. They are, in fact, buying into the anti-oil industry myth that accuses the oil industry of being too rich. No matter than the oil industry only makes 7 cents per dollar sold of gas.

More so, the Gang of 10 seems somehow to believe that by giving huge incentives for alternative energy, we will somehow abandon our addiction to oil overnight. While this is an appropriate long term strategy, we need short term relief.

Saxby Chambliss told Rush Limbaugh that by merely talking about this issue, the price of a barrel of oil has plummeted. Assuming that is true, which really isn’t the safest assumption, but assuming that is true, imagine how much more the price of a barrel of oil would fall if we expanded drilling through the OCS and tapped our shale oil reserves — another something this legislation does not allow (it also does not address ANWR).

Doing nothing is better than the compromise The sad fact is that by doing nothing, Congress will leave the nation better off than it will by acting on the Gang of 10’s compromise. By doing nothing, the Congressional ban on OCS exploration and drilling will lapse for the entire United States, not just Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia.

Saxby Chambliss, John Thune, Bob Corker, Johnny Isakson, and Lindsey Graham didn’t just throw their party under the bus for a politically convenient compromise. They threw the short and long term interests of the American people and our national security under the bus.

This plan does nothing to alleviate our dependence on the Middle East.

Robby ..Ask youself why & the source of Saxby has a $5,000,000.00 war chest. He sure is not planning of running on his record. Do you think he is going to tell the Georgia Voter that he worked with Pelosi & Reid to over ride President Bush’s veto of the Pork filled farm Bill 3 times. Is he going to say that it includes a $473 million subsidy for race horses? Or a 1.1 Billion bail out for NYC land speculators? That it contained over $20 BILLION of Waste? That He recieved nearly $1.5 million from the special interest that benifited from his bill?? How about the fact that his son Bo is a LOBBIST for the Chicago Merc. Exchange who directly profits from the Farm Bill? Do you think he is going to talk about the “Bail out the Banks” bill? How about the $1.4 million he got from banks & lawyers? Martin doesn’t matter he is simply NONE OF THE ABOVE.

Saxby is an embarrassment to the working class citizens of Georgia. The man only cares about continuing to build his personal wealth and is using his political power as a Senator to do so.

Of course Saxby will continue to hide behind the bible and get religious voters to give him free votes. The same voters he could care less about.

Wake up Georgia. Saxby is our personally little false prophet.
